About Adroit Energy, Inc.

Adroit Energy, Inc., is a world-class and full service renewable energy engineering, procurement, and

construction firm. Based in San Diego for 31 years, Adroit also has offices in Honolulu, San Francisco, and

Mountain View, CA

Adroit installed a 1,205 square foot solar thermal system. The system heats water for an employee dining

hall, as well as a laundry facility at Google’s campus in Mountain View, CA

Desert Mountain High School

Largest Solar Cooling System in the world

Scottsdale, AZ

With a cooling capacity of 1,750 kW/500 tons, this is the most powerful Solar Cooling system in the world.

Over 50,000 square feet of thermal collectors were mounted as carports in the parking lot and on the

school’s roof. The system covers 100% of the school’s cooling demand. Adroit completed the installation

with our Austrian partner, SOLID Solar, who designed and engineered the massive system.

Adroit was on the Integrated Project Delivery team to design build this 36 million dollar project. Adroit

designed and installed an architecturally integrated, façade mounted evacuated tube solar thermal

system. It also sends energy to the central plant when the primary loads are satisfied. Adroit also designed

and installed the radiant heating and cooling system for the dining commons.

Solar Cooling and Solar Hot Water

SoCal Gas contracted Adroit to install a solar thermal system for their Energy Resource Center. The solar

cooling and solar hot water systems will be featured as a SoCal Gas demonstration system for the public to

tour and learn more about the technologies. The project features 8 GreenoneTech collectors and 20

Apricus solar thermal collectors.

The Olive Garden

Orange County, CA

Adroit designed and installed a solar hot water system on the roof an Olive Garden location. This system

features 4 solar hot water collectors and a 160 gallon storage tank to accommodate the great need for

hot water in the restaurant. It boasts energy savings of 475 therms annually.

Santa Clara University

Solar Cooling System

This project features the largest rooftop concentrating solar thermal system in California. Adroit partnered

with Chromasun and others on this 60-collector solar hot water system installed at Santa Clara University

(SCU) in Santa Clara, California. The 60 Chromasun MCT collectors generate an estimated 6,727 therms of

energy for water heating at SCU’s Benson Center cafeteria.


NRG Station A

Radiant heating, PV Micro Grid

The Station A and Little House buildings at the decommissioned Potrero power plant on the San Francisco

Bay are sites for NRG’s development of Micro grids. The solar radiant heating system Adroit installed on the

Station A building is designed to be an assist to the existing heating system. The Station A PV system was

built with the ability to have it's electrical system run off the grid. The panels power the Sunny Boy inverters

which initially supply power to the loads in the building. Excess electricity then goes to the Sunny Island

inverters which use that power to charge the batteries and then backfeed to the grid. They can also be

bypassed so that the system is directly tied to the grid. This system is not only functional, but is a showpiece

and learning center for NRG.

JW Marriott, Palm Springs

Solar Thermal Heat Pump – Experimental Cogeneration System

This hotel was a partnership project with collector manufacturer, Chromosum, heat pump manufacturer,

Energy Concepts, and Adroit Energy. The project was completed under a California Energy Commission

Grant for new ways of reducing gas in the hospitality industry. The system increases heat produced through

the use of a custom heat pump developed specifically for this project. The heat pump can deliver 140% of

the thermal energy produced by the high-temp solar collectors while also delivering 25 tons of chilled

water cooling as a by-product. Adroit acted as the Prime contractor, managing local sub-contractors and

responsible for the project’s overall success.

The first U.S. medical facility to feature a solar thermal system that provides air cooling and heating, and

domestic water-heating. The 3,352 SF collector area features 75 Chromasun MCT panels.

Kendall Jackson Winery

Adroit constructed the solar cogeneration system for the winery. The system provides up to 60% of the

building’s hot water needs, with the electricity powering lighting and cooling.

Adroit designed and installed a 448 square foot solar thermal system. This system supplying process hot

water to the winery.

Adroit installed brewery vessel and glycol system piping, as well as a filled water system. Aesthetics were

highly considered in the system’s piping and insulation. Adroit also commissioned the chiller and chilled

Adroit designed and installed a 120 square foot solar thermal system. The system provides domestic hot

water to the ten story federal building.

The Olive Garden

Huntington Beach, CA

This project is one of two Olive Gardens in southern California that converted to a solar hot water system.

Adroit designed and installed the system using SunEarth collectors and an 80 gallon solar hot water tank.

The system is projected to produce 249 therms in annual energy savings.

Adroit partnered with Aztec Solar on the delivery of this retrofit installation. Adroit designed and installed a

148 collector system on a rooftop and on a large carport structure. This is one of the few large solar thermal

carport projects in operation. Adroit designed a system that sends heat to the central plant when the pool

loads are satisfied using all of the available energy of the system.

Adroit changed out the 1982 existing boiler with two modulating, condensing boilers and the heat

exchanger and saved a verified 35,000 therms a year. The project was financed with SDG&Es On Bill

Financing program with a 2.9 year payback.

University of California, Davis

Campus Wide Solar Thermal Feasibility Study

Completed 2011

Adroit Energy performed a campus-wide feasibility study for solar thermal technologies at the University of

California, Davis. The study included 24 different sites including student dormitories, research labs,

recreational activicity centers, gyms, and cafeterias.

This Kombucha Tea brew house is the first of its kind in southern California. Adroit installed a hot water

system under the brew tanks. We also installed the brew house heating system, compressed air system, as

housing for low-income working adults, seniors, and disabled persons.

rehabilitated and reconfigured the mechanical room and replaced the 30 year old space heating boiler

Two separate 7.4kW photovoltaic systems each provide the power for a two story office studio space and

the top floor residence of Rob Quigley and Kathleen Hallahan. Additionally a combination solar thermal

domestic hot water and radiant floor heating with exterior deck heating heats the top floor residence.

Adroit engineered and installed a solar hot water and photovoltaic system on the 17-story high rise in

downtown San Diego. The team installed 40 solar hot water panels on the roof, featuring a custom made

2,499 gallon tank and pump station. The project also includes a 31.25 kW PV system. The 125 PV collectors

as a 14 story integrated façade on the south side of the building. Sources say this is one of the tallest PV

façade integrations in the US.

The Alexander Residence is an affordable housing high-rise in the heart of downtown, San Francisco. Adroit

installed 900 solar hot water evacuated tube collectors on the roof. The solar hot water system is

connected to a 2,000 gallon nominal storage tank. The thermal production is estimated to be 4,599 therms.

This 14-story downtown San Diego building has 153 senior housing units. The Interfaith Housing contracted

Adroit to install 32 Solene collectors and a 2,000 gallon Morley solar storage tank on the high-rise. The

organization financed the project through Adroit’s Thermal Energy Service Agreement.

Mission Housing’s Betel project is located in downtown, San Francisco. Adroit installed two systems on the

property’s 3 separate buildings. Buildings 1 & 2 feature a 722 gallon solar thermal tank and 12 Heliodyne

collectors. The Building 4 system includes 10 solar thermal collectors and a 518 gallon solar storage tank.

The Vermont Street Habitat for Humanity is located in San Jose. Adroit installed two separate solar hot

water systems on the property. The first building has 129 sqft of collectors saving 427 therms of energy

annually. The second building’s solar hot water system has 97 sqft of collector area and an annual energy

savings on 296 therms.

ROEM Corporation contracted Adroit to install al solar hot water system on their San Jose property. The 40-

collector system also includes a 2,860 solar storage tank. The system is estimated to produce 4,928 therms in

annual energy savings.

Adroit designed and installed a 48kW thermal solar hot water heating system and the boiler and storage

tank system. Community Housing Works wanted an installation that would be of the highest quality and

give the most value over its service life. We designed a very robust system with stainless steel storage tanks

and a closed loop condensing boiler. Adroit also integrated the solar heated water into the Geo Power

dedicated outdoor air system. This is the first installation in the US of this Japanese product.

The Aarti Hotel is located in the Tenderloin District of downtown, San Francisco. The solar hot water system

includes 8 collectors, along with a 480 gallon solar storage tank. Adroit also installed a solar control and

monitoring system. TNDC will have save an estimated 1221 Therms in annual energy savings.

Park View Terrace apartments is a 101 unit affordable housing complex in San Francisco. Adroit installed 17

Solene solar thermal collectors and a 1000 gallon storage tank.

Eddy Apartments

The Eddy Apartments were part of a larger renovation of two apartmentment buildings to be renovated

into affordable housing units. The first building included a 22 collector system with a 1400 gallon storage

tank. Adroit was asked to complete a second system for the property which consisted of 12 collectors and

a 900 gallon solar storage tank. The second project took only 3 months from bid to completion.

Berkeley Student Housing Complex

Adroit designed and installed a solar hot water system on this apartment complex located close to the UC

Berkeley campus. The 491 sqft of solar thermal collectors are connected to a 1,000 gallon solar storage

tank. The system’s annual energy savings is estimated to be 1,439 therms.

This project included a unique closed loop heating system for year-round pool heating. The unique design

was based around the west facing rooftop, where Adroit installed 15 glazed solar thermal collectors to a

titanium heat exchanger for the salt water pool.

Country Club Village Condominiums

Adroit built and installed two large solar hot water systems on two high-rise condominiums in Honolulu,

Hawaii. With 469-units, the two condominium high-rises reach 21 and 22-floors. Built in only six weeks, Adroit

utilized a helicopter in order to lift the 196 solar thermal collectors and hot water tank materials to the roof.

One roof features a 5,500 gallon Haase Solar Energy Tank. Two 2,600 gallon Haase Solar Energy tanks were

built on the other roof.

The system was the first commercial thermal system incentivized in SDG&E territory. Adroit designed and

installed four separate solar thermal domestic hot water heating systems for the complex. Features 90 solar

thermal collectors, and a 3,290 Haase storage tank. The system reportedly saves $20,624 of the HOA’s

annual energy costs.

116-unit Condominium

Adroit designed and installed three large solar hot water systems at the 116-unit complex. An overwhelming

majority of the HOA members supported the project. The system included 72 solar thermal collectors.

According to the Center for Sustainable Energy, the system provides an annual energy cost savings of

more than $7,036.

Modern net zero architecture and construction by one of the world’s most innovative architecture firms.

Ground source geothermal, active and passive radiant floor cooling and heating, gravity wall convection

cooling and dehumidification, pool heating, facade integrated evacuated tube solar thermal and

photovoltaics, natural ventilation and automated shading. All systems are controlled via Adroit’s Building

Management System with energy metering and remote system control for continuing system optimization.

Private Residence, Del Mar

An ocean front project with limited site size and an aggressive energy efficient design, utilizes the north

facing roof with a back angled evacuated tube solar thermal system, to offset 50% of the energy of the

heating demand. A 12kW photovoltaic system on the balance of the south facing roof will go far to cover

the electrical load for the ground source geothermal heat pump, providing the balance of energy for

heating and for cooling. Design services included the integration of the combined solar thermal and

ground source geothermal system for mechanical heating and cooling, radiant floor heating, domestic hot

water and pool heating. The design project also incorporates plumbing drain, water and vent isometrics,

and mechanical ventilation for all below grade areas.

This project pushes for a complete zero energy footprint and LEED Platinum designation. Design services

include an integrated ground source geothermal heat pump with mechanical heating and cooling, and

radiant floor heating and mechanical whole house ventilation. An extensive electrical load analysis during

design determines the solar photovoltaic system's size and specifications. The project also features solar

thermal and domestic hot water systems.

The Zero House, Rancho Santa Fe

This verified Net Zero luxury residence features an 8,000 sq ft. radiant floor heating system. 35 solar

collectors, and 2,000 gallons of storage as primary radiant heat source. One of two pools are heated from

the excess solar energy. Two ground source geothermal heat pumps backup the radiant system. The

project also included a 35kW photovoltaic system, and two drain back solar thermal domestic hot water

heating systems. A Tekmar tn4 whole house controls ties into the home automation.

This projected started as a photovoltaic system (8.4kW) and domestic solar hot water for a new residence

ready to start construction. The design quickly grew to include a ground source geothermal heat pump for

a near zero energy footprint. The heat pump supplies the radiant floor heating, chill water fan coil cooling,

radiant wine room cooling, aquarium heating and cooling, and pool heating. The pool, designed by Skip

Phillips and Mission Pools, incorporates an in-shell radiant heating system. A Tekmar tn4 control system ties

all of these systems together for home automation.

To minimize the use of propane on site, a twenty ton ground loop field plays double duty for two systems,

space heating and cooling, and pool heating. The residence geothermal heat pumps generate the

radiant floor heating, chill water fan coil cooling, and exterior radiant deck heating. Separate geothermal

heat pumps heat a 20' x 50' pool designed by Skip Phillips and Mission Pools, with in shell radiant heating.

The project includes a 9.2 kW photovoltaic system and a Tekmar Tn4 control system tied into home

automation system.

Designed as a spec house with an aggressive LEED agenda, this small footprint, big ambitions project
