A front show designed for three dancers in an immersive environment shaped by projected images. Those are computer-generated for the dancers to play with, making up a digital score performed live by a digital interpreter. The performance matches seemingly impossible visions: images look alive while bodies fly, defying gravity. The acrobatic and digital choreography outlines a body language that involves a new relationship to time, space and the whole world. Beyond looking for technical achievement, what matters is the attempt at creating a motion dreamscape by way of images.

Space: a living territory between the material and the digital

We wish to remove images from screens, to turn them into landscapes, into playing partners, and to put them at the center of the space mapping.

The set is inhabited by a 3 face structure: two vertical panels of white gauze and a white dance floor are asymmetrically combined to create an immersive projection system (heir to Cave virtual reality systems). Thanks to this device many diverse realms can arise. Alternately, they can be:- realistic or geometrical, so that projections fit the material structure shape and match the edges and surfaces ;- organic and evanescent, as the white gauze becomes transparent and vanishes to the eye. Graphic elements then seem to be floa-ting and drifting, making the air inherent to the scene cage tangible.

Body: a dancers’ trio

On stage three performers can float around space. driven by verticality they struggle between enthusiasm and anguish, between falling down and rising up. Their bodies define a new and unusual language that draws its inspiration from the ordinary but trans-poses it in a poetic way. This language plays with reality to explore a living kinetic art territory where bodies evolve between abs-traction and emotion. It is a quest for a motion-driven onirism.

In addition to projected images, uplifting and suspension devices allow bodies to rise up in the air without any magical trick. The dancers work on their sense of weight and balance with the floor, they devise illusory aerial trajectories and juggle with space. The body motion transcend the possible to reach the impossible and the images’ immaterial realms.

Writing: organizing forces

This show is not grounded on a text. Its language is based on the combination of video images, bodies, space and sound.nowadays, digital technology has shaken up stage crafts so that we feel like explorers within new continents. We call « writing » the trace we leave on these territories. To us, it is about writing with the elements in a similar spirit to Land Art, it is playing with nature and its forces. However, here, fire, snow, sand, water, smoke and rocks are digital and virtual, and so the bearers of a newer ani-mism. It is then a matter of organizing the forces of the digital nature and guiding its energies, to achieve a rhythmic work with the projected images drawing on the intentions at the very motion’s core. It is about writing with a passion for motion.

Image: a playing partner

This « living light » is produced by video projectors and generated in real time by a set of algorithms. it is a mix of control room operated human interventions and onstage sensors data that outlines a precise writing of motions and generative behaviors. Thus, those images are never prerecorded for a rigid show on an imposed rhythm: on the contrary, they breathe and move with the dancers and organize a new space for them to explore.Sometimes they are graphically minimalistic and embody simple environments like cloudy or snowy skies. Sometimes they are more anthropomorphic and turn into ghosts, puppets, doppelgängers or shadows. in every case the audience is transported by their movements’ sensuality and energy. They are generated according to physical models and therefore remind everyone of their own real life experience and imaginary of motion.

These processes can show inner landscapes as well as reveal the invisible, make one feel the tiny big, or turn out to be an absurd and merciless infernal machinery. Eventually, even though computer-generated, our images are deeply sensitive and human and used as an integral part of the scenography and dramaturgy. In the audience’s eyes, they have lost their image status to become a territory as well as a playing partner.

IT tools

as part of the company’s reflection about motion and the objects’ choreography we have continued developing a software since 2006, which initiates every creation and collaboration and is maintained as their core.

The objective for this software named eMotion (for electronic motion) is to write down the interactions between images and bo-dies in the realms of performing arts. It is based on physical models in order to animate various situations: it focuses on the inner energy that causes objects to move, rather than on their actual movement patterns. All images are thus generated, calculated and projected live, in order to create a sensory synthesis, a tangible reality on stage.

In 2014 an important change in IT research began within the company when it joined forces with the Anomes company and its founder Philippe Chaurand.Famous for creating the Milumin software, Anomes is currently upgrading its audiovisual shows’ creation and management software. The company will therefore delegate to this software all general audiovisual management aspects in order to focus eMotion development on its specific core : the objects’ motion. at the same time the air project will serve as an experimental field for anomes’ future software.

eMotion 2.0 is then to be understood as a powerful and very specialized plug-in integrated into a strong generalist tool thanks to Anomes’ high quality development skills. eMotion 2.0 will remain the company’s property and will not be commercialized. Tuto-rials and exchange fora will be there to help the users’ community and allow a living and continuous evolution of the software.

Light: color temptation, air material

We long to reveal color through light to counterpoise the white and black video projections and to allow everyone to experience skies in their diversity: whether they show slight different shades, whether they are clear and bright or whether they spread an enveloping color. We want to turn the inside outside and give the audience the impression they truly see and even feel the depth of the invisible, of a phantom presence that speaks for itself. To materialize the immaterial. We have an appetite for vibration, halo and spray.

Artistic journey

Searching for a live digital world

The adrien M / Claire B Company has been acting in the fields of the digital arts and performing arts since 2004. They create many forms of art, from stage performances to exhibitions combining real and virtual worlds with IT tools that were developed and customised specifically for them. They place the human body at the heart of technological and artistic challenges and adapt today’s technological tools to create a timeless poetry through a visual language based on playing and enjoyment, which breeds imagination. The projects have been carried out by Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne since 2011 when they refounded the company. Adrien Mondot is a multi-disciplinary artist, computer scientist, IT specialist and juggler who investigates and inquires about movement.Claire Bardainne is a visual artist, graphic designer and scenographer, who holds degrees from the Ecole Estienne and the arts déco in Paris. Her research focuses on the link between graphic signs, images and space, exploring back-and-forth shifts between the imaginary and the real worlds.

Five years after Cinématique and almost 10 years after Convergence 1.0 this third long-lasting performance gets back to circus arts’ languages. it develops a specific writing that is based on the close relationship between the circus body and a digital imaginary space that creates illusion. This new performance happens after two experiments that are close to but lightly differ from theatrical shows : a conference-show called Un point c’est tout and a choreographic performance named Hakanaï. The company also created XYZT abstract landscapes, an exhibition that immerse the audience in a luxuriant digital territory.

This new creation reaffirms the essential focus of the company’s artisitc research which can be listed as follow:

A thoughtful digital technology for the benefit of performing arts. In order to preserve the force of the live presence on stage and then transpose it to the digital medium, all images are generated, computed and projected live.

The idea of digital writing and performance of digital scores. Through a musical approach to the images and an instrumental approach to the computer program, the experience of the moment is emphasized.

Interactive ways of overcoming the technical challenge.Using capturing systems from video game technology (for their power in calculation and reactivity) combined to a work of virtual puppetry (for the value of human intuition and its dreaming ability) allows us to offer the audience this sensitive experience.

Use of the unconscious experience of movement. The computing and mathematical models come from the observation of Nature. This private and unconscious experience of movement creates an imaginary world where abstract graphic forms turn into evocative worlds.

The structuration of coincidences. The gestures interfere with the images to engender verisimilitude and coherence. Building strong bridges between the digital and real resources allows the turning of the virtual into an extension of the real.

It is most certainly this concept of extended body for an extended reality that makes the AIR project special. Body motions transcend the limits of possible to reach the impossible of immaterial realms.

It is the fourth company’s project that is cosigned by both Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne.
