Enjoying EPUB eBooks on Your NookFrom the New Hampshire Downloadable Books Consortium
Outline:
1. Download & Install Adobe Digital Editions.
2. Register for an Adobe account or use your existing account to authenticate your computer and readers.
3. Register your Nook with Barnes & Noble, if necessary.
4. Log into the New Hampshire site.
5. Browse for an eBook.
6. Check out and download an eBook.
Why all the steps?
Our eBooks have DRM or Digital Rights Management.
Special software from Adobe strictly manages the two-week checkout period.
But no late fees! After two weeks the eBook is automatically returned to the digital collection so someone else can enjoy the book.
Policies:
You may have three (3) items checked out at once.
You may have up to five (5) items on hold.
Hold notifications are sent via email. You have 48 hours to pick up your hold.
If an item on hold becomes available, you must have less than three items checked out to check out the held item.
Circulation Periods:
eBooks circulate for 14 days and can be returned early via Adobe Digital Editions
(The Audiobooks circulate for 7 days and cannot be returned early.)
Installing Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 on your Windows (or Mac) Computer

Popular devices that require Adobe Digital Editions:
Nook Simple Touch
An older Sony Reader (that doesn’t allow for wireless public library downloads)
All Kobo devices.
Devices that can use ADE or the OverDrive Media Console app:
Nook Tablet
Nook Color
Note: Nook HD and Nook HD+ users must use the OverDrive Media Console app found in the device’s app store.
Finding the Software
From the NHDB site, click “Help” to find software downloads.
Click on “Software”
Choose Adobe Digital Editions.

A new tab opens and you are brought to Adobe’s website.
Click on “Download Now.”
Select your operating system. (For this handout, we used Windows 7 running the Firefox browser. The download will vary slightly if you are using Chrome or Internet Explorer.)
Save the file (on Firefox).

Find the downloaded file and double-click (on Firefox).
Run the file.
Select your desired set up…
Don’t change the installation location.

Accept the license agreement and click “Next” then “Close.
Register for an Adobe ID or enter an existing ID. Hint: Your ID is always an email address.
You must get an Adobe ID if you wish to transfer the eBook to your device or return it early to the collection. Don’t authorize your computer without an ID!
Upgrading to Adobe Digital Editions 2.0
If you are upgrading from another version of Adobe Digital Editions, you will see a screen prompting you to migrate the data.

You won’t be prompted to authorize your software with a new Adobe ID…
…but if you have problems downloading a book, consider de-authorizing the software and re-authorizing the software (Shift-Ctrl-d).
Checking Out an Adobe EPUB or Open EPUB eBook
Sign into the site by clicking “Sign In” in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Type in the name of the library or town/city name to find your library.

Some libraries require just the 14-digit card number or a prefix to the library number…
…and some libraries require additional login information. Be sure to check with your local librarian for more information.
Great! You are now logged in!
Browse for an Available eBook
Click on the “Menu” icon to see the site navigation.
Select the genre of your choice within the “eBook” section of the site. (Remember we are looking for an eBook to put on your Nook!)

Once you select a genre (or All Fiction or All Nonfiction), you will probably want to narrow down the results to the Adobe EPUB or Open EPUB format. (What’s the difference? They are both EPUB formats, but the Open EPUB has no DRM, or Digital Rights Management.)
Be sure to click “Available Now” to see the titles that don’t have a waiting list.
Select a book by clicking on the cover.
If you decide to check out the book, click “Borrow.”
“Add to Wish List” if you want to remember the title for later.
Be sure to check the available formats!

When you see “Go to Bookshelf” the eBook is yours for the next two weeks!
Click “Go to Bookshelf.”
Nook users will need to use the Adobe EPUB (or Open EPUB) version of the Book. (Only Kindle reader users or Kindle app users can make use of the Kindle Books.)

The site is just checking that you really want an Adobe EPUB eBook…
You are ready to download the eBook!
You’ve installed the Adobe Digital Editions software and authorized your computer with an Adobe ID. You are ready.
Click “Download.”
If you are using Firefox, you should see “Open with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.
If you are using Internet Explorer, you will see open or save. Be sure to open the file. If you installed ADE, the computer will know to open the file with ADE.
If you are using Chrome, look towards the lower-left side of your screen to see the download temporary stalled. Double-click the file to resume the download.
Adobe Digital Editions opens and the eBook file downloads.
Click “Library” to start the transfer.

Connect your Nook.
Click, hold, drag, and drop your new eBook to the “Nook” listed on the sidebar of ADE.
Safely disconnect your Nook.

Right-click to return the Adobe EPUB eBook early. Open EPUB cannot be returned early.
