At the Yokohama YMCA, Department of Japanese Language Studies, you will be trained
thoroughly in all of the following four areas of Japanese language; listening, speaking,
reading, and writing, aiming to learn genuine Japanese. Whether for work, or to pursue
further studies in special schools, universities, or graduate schools in Japan, our learning
system is perfect for you.
■Course Structure:There are two type of courses according to the purposes of study.

★This course is aimed for training Japanese language from elementary level to
intermediate level. You will be able to master basic Japanese communication skills that

★This course is aimed for training Japanese language of advanced level. You will be able
to master practical Japanese communication skills that will help you secure
employment, pursue further studies, and deal with various scenes in your social life.
*Student that completed the Regular Japanese Course may advance to the Japanese and
Culture Studying Course if he/she so wishes. The Studying period will be two years in
total.
*The school issues a graduation certificate to students who were enrolled for a certain
period, and were able to meet the required attendance percentage and grades.
■Maximum Enrollment: A total of 120 students (Regular Japanese Course:80 students, Japanese
and Culture Studying Course: 40 students) ※Each class will be around 15 students.
■Class Hours: 5 periods a day, 5 days a week from Monday to Friday
(25 periods a week, 36 weeks a year. A total of 900 periods a year)

■Application Requirements:
1) The applicant must have completed 12 years of formal education or meets requirements for
admission into high education such as universities in their home country.
2) The applicant must be 18 years old or above.
3) The applicant must obtain a valid visa.
4) The applicant must have a contact person residing in Japan.
5) The applicant for the Japanese and Culture Studying Course must have a Japanese
language ability equivalent to N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

* Please choose the day you would like to take the placement test and make an appointment. The
exams are from 9:10 to around 11:00. Examinees are required to arrive by 9:00 at the information
desk on the 8th floor.
*Please bring pencils, erasers, and any Japanese text books you have been using.
*Results of the first examinations will be notified within a week. Results of the second
examinations will be notified on the day of the tests. If you are accepted for entry, please pay the
tuition and fees by a specified due dates.
■Contact Person in Japan:
A contact person living in Japan is required when applying to the YMCA. On top of preparing
and turning in the student’s application materials, the contact person will be asked to help and
support the student. Also, the contact person may be asked to assist the student with their
studies after entering the school.
A contact person must meet the following requirements:
1) He/ She must be a relative, a friend, or an acquaintance of the student, and must know the
student and his/her family very well.
2) He/ She must be well settled in Japan, and must have a firm understanding of the
Japanese language, laws, culture, and customs.
■Financial Supporter:
A Financial sponsor is someone who is responsible for bearing all expenses of the student during
his / her studies at the YMCA. The financial sponsor will be asked to submit a “Payment Form”.
■Others:

-Scholarships Students who enrolled for 6 months or more, and have excellent grades and attendance will
have chances to be granted scholarships after screening.
Scholarship of the Yokohama YMCA College Department of Japanese Language
(¥10,000 a month, for 6 months, about 4 students every semester)
-Student’s Commutation Tickets Students can purchase student’s commutation tickets and the school will issue discount cards.
-Student Insurance System for Vocational Schools
The system compensates for deaths, hospitalizations, and outpatient treatments, due to
disasters and accidents during school activities. The premium will be paid by the school.
-Health Examination
Occurs once a year in which the school will pay the expenses. -Volunteer Tutoring System
A Japanese volunteer will help you with your conversational practices after school if you wish.
-Using Attached Facilities Inside the Yokohama Central YMCA building where the Japanese school is located, there are
swimming pool, training gym, and running track. Student of the Japanese school may use
these facilities free of charge during designated time.

At the YMCA College of Human Services; Department of Japanese Language Studies; you
will be learning the required Japanese language skills to advance to a higher level of
education. It aims to grasp the natural Japanese through a cultural exchange with
Japanese students from YMCA College of Human Services and the locals around its area. ■Course Structure:

Application documents( Standard Requirements)
Please read the following notes carefully before filling out the necessary application forms using
the sample as a guide. The application forms must be submitted by the applicant and the contact
person directly to the Yokohama YMCA College Department of Japanese Language.
1) Fill in the forms using black or blue ink. Also, you can download the forms with ★mark
from our Website ( http://www.yokohamaymca.ac.jp/jls/cms/entrance/dl/ ) and fill them out
using computers.
2) Please do not use white-out (correction fluid). Cross out the mistake/s with two lines and
correct it/them.

②3 Photos of the applicant (2 copies of 4cmx3cm, 1 copy of 3cmx2.5cm)
・Write your name and your date of birth on the back of each copy. Attach one photo to the
application form.
③Diploma of the Last School Attended
・Please submit your diploma of the last school you have attended.
・If the diploma is written in languages other than Japanese or English, please attach a
translation.
④Photocopies of the Applicant’s Passport
・The school will make photocopies of all pages with recorded items.
⑤Photocopies of the Applicant’s Foreign Registration Card
・The school will make the photocopies of both sides of the card.
