Administration of Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist

60-hour course (30 hours online instruction, 30 hours lab practicum)

Don’t just observe local anesthesia administration, experience it first hand.

SPC is the largest dental hygiene program in the region. Joan Tonner, CRDH, BSHS, MA has been teaching it since 2001 and is the lead instructor for this highly interactive course.

Personal malpractice insurance is encouraged, but is not required. You will be required to complete and sign SPC’s Conditions for Student Participation, Release of Liability and Medical History forms..

Refund/cancellation policy:Refunds will be given with written notice one week prior to the online component of the course opening. There will be no refunds or transfers if you are unable to complete the online component of the course or attend the clinical labs. You must complete the online portion of the course and attend and participate as a patient subject all four lab days in order to receive your Certificate of Completion. SPC reserves the right to cancel the course or close registration based on space availability.

The registered dental hygienist will receive the required hours in both the didactic instruction and the clinical experience for Florida certification. You will learn the neurophysiology, armamentarium, techniques of local anesthesia administration, local and systemic complications and the pharmacology of local anesthetic agents. Learn to safely and effectively select and administer local anesthesia.

Online content is self-paced (Online course must be completed prior to lab). All 4 labs must be attended.

Required text (Cost of textbook is extra): • Malamed 6th Edition Handbook for Local Anesthesia 978-0-323-07413-1 • Must be purchased for online portion of class

Participants must bring the following to lab: • Two sterile breech loading aspirating dental syringes • Safety glasses • Clinical attire with closed toe shoes • Special mask or gloves if needed. SPC will provide Nitrile gloves in S/M/L. Masks will

be standard ear loop style.
