How To Choose An Adhesive Tape

Even if a self adhesive tape can be applied on almost all matrials, it is good sense to evaluate application parameters and conditions before making a choice.

Application Surface

Normally self adhesive tapes are compatible with a majority of application surfaces and materials, but sometimes some of them low compatability or anti-adhesive properties. In some cases the adhesion could be difficult, or bond could be affected by chemical interaction. It is always recommended to carry out compatability tests.

Conditions of use

Best temperarture for application ranges between 15°c and 25°c in a dry environment and it is preferable not to apply the tape with temperatures lower than 10°c. If application temperatures are substantially different from these the adhesive can behave differently according to its chemical nature.

For best results please consider these practical suggestions:Application surfaces must be dry and free from dust.Do not apply on surfaces treated or contaminated by anti-adhesives.

The adhesive tape experience of Pomona Group is always available for any technical information or support and we can advise best solutions for any specific requirement.

Do not use paints containing additives which could reduce the adhesive properties.Avoid contact with surfaces containing plasticizers or other chemical agents not compatible with the tape.Smooth surfaces increase adhesion.In case of rough or irregular surfaces, it is better to use tape with a higher quantity of adhesive.Important datas to be evaluated are “working” conditions and potential removability of the tape without resi-dues.

Self-adhesive tapes technical features are generally not permanent but remain at their best for a minimum of 12 months, if stored according to suggested conditions and avoiding extreme environmental conditions such as qick and sudden temperature changes, extremely high or low temperatures, high levels of humidity, etc.

Matching The Adhesive Tape and Carton

When choosing the correct pressure sensitive packaging tape refer to the below diagrams as a guide with reference to the carton being used for the application. During cold and damp conditions the recycled board diagram should be used. Below are the definitions of the terms used in each axis:

Transport impact - refers to the amount of impact or stress the carton or cartons are subjected to during transport. High being cartons which will have several stages of transport, are not palletised and could be handled roughly due to a number of circumstances. Low referring to cartons which will be palletised and not under a lot of stress in transport.

Weight - refers to the weight of the transported goods. Value of goods - refers to the value placed upon the transported goods. whether the goods are of high mon-etary value or of a delicate nature.
