Update on Recent HHS Activities Impacting Pharmacists
American Pharmacists Association
CMS issued new regulations effective during the public health emergency:• Addresses pharmacists’ testing
• COVID-19 tests covered when ordered by a healthcare professional, including pharmacists, within state scope of practice.
• Medicare will pay for tests conducted by pharmacists as part of a Medicare-enrolled laboratory (with a CLIA certificate).
• Flu and respiratory virus tests covered if done with a COVID-19 diagnostic test.• Pharmacist clinical services, including assessment and specimen collection, covered under
“incident to” if under contract with physician or other practitioner.• Clarifies coverage of medication management services as incident to under Part B
and Part D• Provides certain telehealth flexibilities
Lots of payment/billing questions, implementation issues, access gaps, and more…. APhA is working to get answers, fill the gaps, and make testing work for you.
