Many years of research has confirmed that crack sealing is the most cost-effective method of pavement preservation. Other methods of preservation are
effective but only one is the most cost-effective - “crack sealing”. The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends the Crafco system as a cost-effective way to prolong the life of asphalt pavement. Study after study has proven that when cracks are sealed at the proper time, two to four years of added pavement life can be expected before other treatments are required. Other methods used for pavement preservation are effective and needed in many situations, but are more costly than crack sealing. Many studies have shown that for every $1.00 spent on crack sealing, saves $4.00 in rehabilitation cost. With other treatments, costs are several times more per square yard therefore “when budgets are tight the time for the Crafco system is right”.
Cracking in asphalt and concrete pavement will occur. Pavement design and maintenance engineers have had to contend with this leaving maintenance departments bearing most of the burden of dealing with cracks. Pavement cracks are inevitable, and without proper maintenance and repair will lead to accelerated cracking or potholes further impairing the life and serviceability of the pavement.

A common option utilized by city or state maintenance departments is the Crafco system. For many years it has been done, usually on a routine basis. However, only in the last two decades has it been recognized as a preventive maintenance tool as well. Crack filling the Crafco way with proper high performance fillers will effectively “glue” the pavement together and stop pot holes.

Place in line with six spacers on each side. The cut will be approximately 1/2 inch wide. Use until needed depth cannot be reached any longer, then discard. Use on AC pavement or PCCP. Some spalling can be expected.
This eight tooth cutter provides a cleaner and more consistent cut on asphalt or concrete pavement than previous types of commercially available cutters. The wide hub and smaller arbor reduces cutter “wobble” providing a cleaner pavement cut which improves the sealant bond to the crack sidewall resulting in a longer lasting crack seal. Provides 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch cut.

Place six spacers on each side for a 1/2 inch wide cut. Stack two cutters side by side with three spacers on each side, or stagger in a 2-1-2-1-2-1 configuration for a 1.3 inch wide cut. You can also use three cutters side-by-side for a two inch wide cut. Always stack or stagger in a balanced manner. These cutters can be used on AC pavement or PCCP. Some spalling can be expected.
These cutters are the same as the 31136 cutter except they have an increased cut depth up to two inches. Three cutters are evenly spaced on the cutter head leaving every other pin empty.

This process should be performed on pavements that are in good condition. That is defined as a pavement with a sound base and exhibits distress in the form of thermal or working cracks spaced at over 20 feet. The procedure consists of routing and sealing transverse cracks in order to prevent moisture from entering and deteriorating the subbase and incompressible material from interfering with thermal movement. See the Crafco application instructions for your chosen sealant to get specific directions on preparation and application. The expected life of this procedure is 5 to 7 years in most cases.
Crafco Crack Sealing
This procedure consists of filling closely spaced or non-working cracks to stop moisture from penetrating to the subbase of the pavement. If moisture is not checked, catastrophic pavement failure such as potholes will form. Another reason for crack filling is to stop crack raveling. Crack filling is a very cost-effective method of pavement repair that will add years to its life. Crack fill pavements that are in fair to poor condition on a regular basis to maintain their condition. A life of 3 to 5 years can be expected.

Sealing concrete pavement joints is required to stop moisture from entering and deteriorating the subbase of the pavement. The most cost-effective method of ensuring optimum performance of a PCC pavement is by constructing a sound joint seal system that will last. The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) study on longitudinal joints has determined that Crafco Pavement Joint
Adhesive is the winner for reducing longitudinal joint cracks and joint failure over all other joint sealant products and techniques tested. The studies took place over a six-year period (Sept. 1995 - July 2001) and were performed in five states: Pennsylvania, Colorado, Michigan, Wisconsin, and New Jersey. These tests confirmed that longitudinal joints in asphalt pavement, if not treated, would encounter cracking, raveling and eventually fail due to water infiltration, thermal movement and low density. They have found that Crafco's hot-applied modified asphalt composition effectively bonds paving passes together creating a watertight seal during thermal movement resulting in improved long-term performance of the joint with no significant cracking. This product is also effective for waterproofing exposed edges of asphalt concrete pavement areas such as at the curb gutter, and shoulder interfaces. Additionally, waterproofing can be assured where manhole covers and hand valves (gas, water, etc.) are installed in asphalt concrete pavement. Like other Crafco products this product is easy to apply using Crafco's Melter/Applicator equipment.
