Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions
Add or Subtract. Identify any xvalues for which the expression is undefined.

Finding the Least Common Multiple
To add or subtract rational expressions with different denominators, you must write all of the expressions with a common denominator. It is easiest to use the Least Common Denominator (LCD). To do this, find the least common multiple of the denominators.
Step 1: Find the prime factors of each expressionStep 2: Write each prime factor the greatest number of time it appears in either expression. Simplify where possible.
Finding the Least Common Multiple
Find the LCM for each pair.
