ADAT Transfer Procedure

Procedure to transfer 16 tracks at once from AW to PC using ADAT: 1) You need 2 x MY8-AT interface cards installed in the AW4416 2) You need a sound card in the PC or an interface hooked to the PC via FireWire or USB 2.0 that has at least 16 channels of ADAT capability 3) You need an audio recorder/editor software on the PC that will handle at least 16 tracks at once - Sonar 7 should do nicely 4) Plug a lightpipe cable from OUTPUT of MY8-AT card in Slot 1 of the AW to ADAT 1 IN on the PC ADAT card. 5) Plug a lightpipe cable from OUTPUT of MY8-AT card in Slot 2 of the AW to ADAT 2 IN on the PC ADAT card. 6) On the AW, press <SETUP> <F4> 'D. In Setup' and insure that the 'INT' clock source is chosen 7) Insure that the settings of the ADAT interface in the PC are set to 'Autosync' or 'Slave' mode and that there is indication that the wordclock is 'synced' with the AW 8) Start a session in Sonar that is the SAME SAMPLE RATE (i.e. 44.1kHz or 48kHz) as the tune that you are wanting to transfer from the AW. I would also insure that you are going to be recording at 32-bit bit depth in Sonar. (The transfer will not physically crash with any bit depth that you choose, but you are going to want to be editing/processing at 32-bit, so you might as well record at that) 9) Assign the 16 ADAT inputs from your ADAT interface card to 16 mono tracks (make sure they are flat EQ, panned center, and at 0 dbFS input gain) 10) On the AW, press <SETUP> <F2> 'Patch Out', then set 'Slot 1' 1-8 to be 'RDR-1' to 'RDR-8'. Set 'Slot 2' 1-8 to be 'RDR-9' to 'RDR-16' 11) On the AW, press <Track> and insure that you are completely rewound to the start of the tune. 12) In Sonar, make sure that you are at time zero. 13) Arm all the tracks in Sonar for recording 14) Press the Big Red 'R' in Sonar 15) Press <PLAY> on the AW Once the tune is finished, stop Sonar and then stop the AW. Voila!

  • Procedure to transfer 16 tracks at once from PC to AW using ADAT (assuming the same song with edited tracks):

    1) Plug a lightpipe cable from OUTPUT of ADAT 1 on the PC ADAT card to IN port of MY8-AT card in Slot 1 of the AW.

    2) Plug a lightpipe cable from OUTPUT of ADAT 2 on the PC ADAT card to IN port of MY8-AT card in Slot 2 of the AW.

    3) Insure that the settings of the ADAT interface in the PC are set to 'Master' mode

    4) On the AW, press 'D. In Setup' and choose one of the 'Slot

    1) boxes is chosen as the wordclock master. and that there is indication that the wordclock is 'synced' with the AW (if it is not synced, there will be a warning message flashing at the bottom of the AW's screen). You may have to hit 'Play' in Sonar with the tune loaded up to get the PC interface card's wordclock to switch to the correct sample rate of the tune.

    5) Assign the 16 mono tracks in Sonar to the 16 ADAT channels of your PC sound card (ADAT interface)

    6) Make sure the Sonar tracks are panned center and at whatever output level that you are happy with, as long as the level is below 0dbFS. +++ This ASS-umes that the ADAT interface driver allows for mono channel output ++ IF the outputs of the card are 8 Stereo Pairs, then you need to assign output 1/2 to tracks 1 & 2, then pan track 1 hard-left, track 2 hard-right.... Assign output 3/4 to tracks 3 & 4, then pan track 3 hard-left, track 4 hard-right... Etc.

    7) On the AW, press 'Patch In', then set 'Mixer Channel Input Assign' 1-8 is set to 'SL1-1' through 'SL1-8'. Set 9-16 to be 'SL2-1' through 'SL2-8'

    8) On the same screen, insure that 'Recorder Track Input Assign' 1-16 are set to 'DIR 1' through 'DIR 16'

    9) On the AW, press 'V.Track' and choose an empty column of V. Tracks (for this example lets choose 3). Set all the Virtual Tracks to '3' for all 16 tracks.

    10) On the AW, press 'TR View'. You should see a completely blank track display (no WAVs recorded).

    11) On the AW, insure that you are completely rewound to the start of the tune.

    12) On the AW, arm all 16 tracks for recording. 13) In Sonar hit 'Play' and let the song play through completely while watching

    the meters on the AW to insure that you are getting signal and also to

  • insure that none of the inputs are 'wearing their red hats' (overs not a good thing as digital distortion is NASTY). If you see any overs on the meters, adjust the output levels for the corresponding tracks in Sonar and then repeat the process until you get good levels going into the AW.

    14) Once you have completed the input level checking, then in Sonar, make sure that you are at time zero.

    15) Press the Big Red 'R' and on the AW to start it recording. 16) Press in Sonar
