I am an Architect and Urban Designer and currently hold the position of Deputy Programme Manager for the Clean Air & Sustainable Mobility Program at Center for Science and Environment. I have over 5 years of experience working in several Urban Design and Architectural firms in India- designing integrated and inclusive urban places. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a public interest research and advocacy organization based in New Delhi. CSE researches into, lobbies for and communicates the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable. As a part of the Clean Air and Sustainable Mobility Programme, my role is to research, plan, design, advice and lobby for adopting means of sustainable Urban Planning and Design techniques. Before getting engaged with CSE I was working with UTTIPEC. At the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) established by the DDA, I provided policy and design support on Transit Oriented Development in Delhi. I was involved in testing of the TOD Policy for its refinement and subsequent addition into the Master Plan of Delhi for 2021. Along with it, I have been involved in re-designing parts of the city on the principles of Transit Oriented Development. The work involved, Urban Design/ planning studies for formulation of the Policy, detailed site/ region analysis on Arc GIS for planning/ designing TOD areas in Chattarpur and Mundka, assisting in designing and presentation works for the proposed scheme, GIS based analysis and co-coordinating with an international team of consultants working on development of Integrated Landuse and Transport Model for Delhi. I have also been involved in review of various Integrated Transport- Landuse Infrastructure projects proposed by Government organizations of Delhi, looking particularly into its impact on the urban form of the city. I have been involved in the conceptualization and design of Vikas Marg Multi Modal Integration and comprehensive parking strategy. I have also worked with Architectural practices in India established by principals with international works experience. I have worked on conceptualizing, designing, detailing, presenting and preparing drawings/ presentation documents for various kinds of buildings in India. Some of the projects I have worked on, include, designing and detailing of various academic and residential blocks in Indian Institute of technology at Roorkee and Saharanpur, Master Planning and architectural design and detailing for social housing complexes in INXT-Gurgaon, Netaji Nagar in Delhi and various other places in India. I have also worked on preparation of Good for Construction Drawings and site co-ordination for multiple projects in India. I have also been teaching the students of M.Arch. (Urban Regeneration) at Department of Architecture & Ekistics at the University of Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi. I have given multiple guest lecture to the students of School of Planning & Architecture in New Delhi and Bhopal.

Urban Design Form based Studies and Testing of TOD Development Control Norms proposed for Delhi February 2013 to May 2013

The task involved study of Existing Densities, Urban Pattern and Built Form typologies in TOD areas, testing TOD Policy norms on existing areas by conjecturing various future scenarios of development on TOD Principles. There were multiple areas selected in the city of Delhi, and the palette of study areas was distributed amongst a team of four consultants.

The Policy for Transit Oriented Development prepared by UTTIPEC's core team of consultants was published for wider public opinion. Based on the suggestion received from general public, stakeholders, experts and bureaucrats, a series of meeting were held. The TOD Policy and its detailed norms were tested for various scenarios of development. Accordingly, changes were suggested in the TOD Policy and in the Delhi Master Plan/ Zonal Plans based on TOD Policy recommendations.

Concept Urban Design Framework for TOD along Rohtak Road, from Peeragarhi to Tikri Kalan Metro Stations September 2012 to December 2012

The concept stage of the project involved, detailed site analysis on GIS database, site surveys and opinion surveys, detailed need analysis of the existing infrastructure and future infrastructure requirements for proposed high density as per TOD Policy and preparation of Concept Urban Design Framework Plan. The work was accomplished in a team of two consultants and one supervising Sr. Consultant.

Detailed Urban Design Framework Plan for TOD along M.G. Road, Chattarpur to Arjangarh Metro Station January 2013 to Present

The concept proposal was ready, when I was assigned the task to develop the detailed Urban Design Framework Plan. The task included detailed analysis of Master Plan, Zonal Development Plan and proposed policies of Low Rise Residential Area, Land Pooling and Transit Oriented Development, to analyze possible scenarios of future development in the area. A detailed need analysis was done, in order to integrate the TOD based proposed development into the Zonal Development Plan of the area. This being a Pilot project, all the proposed TOD norms were tested through a detailed planning and design exercise in the area. Subsequently, changes in the TOD Policy and ZDP were proposed. The U. D. Framework Plan is still being modified based on the inputs from the second leg of the planning exercise, in which the TIA, Economic Feasibility Model and the Decentralized Infrastructure Strategy are being developed to refine and finalize the TOD Influence Zone Plan. I was helped in the process by three trainees for a short duration, two GIS experts, while a portion of the work was supervised by a Sr. Consultant.

After the completion of the Detailed Urban Design Framework Plan for the corridor, the plan was shared with consultants specializing in Transport related studies, Economic feasibility and Market testing and detailed Infrastructure studies. In the stage Co-ordination with Consultants for preparation of Integrated Landuse and Transport Model, Transport Impact Assessment, Economic Feasibility Model and Infrastructure Strategy for TOD along M.G. Road, Chattarpur to Arjangarh Metro Station was undertaken. Accordingly there were specific recommendations of changes in the Policy and the Detailed Urban Design Framework Plan.

Site studies, analysis and exploration of design options for Women Safety measures in Urban Design and retrofitting of Delhi’s streets and Public Spaces December 2012 to February 2013

After the December 16th incident in Delhi, UTTIPEC took up a study of the streets and Public Spaces of Delhi to list down elements of planning/ design of streets/ Public spaces of Delhi which encourage crime against women. The task involved detailed site studies, analysis and exploration of design options for Women Safety measures in Urban Design and retrofitting of Delhi’s streets and Public Spaces.
