Adair County 4-Hers in ACTION Adair County Hot Shots made and delivered Easter baskets to residents of Greenfield Rehabilitation and HealthCare Center and cleaned the Greenfield Square with Extension staff. Jefferson Pioneers made and delivered thank-you cookies and deserts to the Stuart Buying Group. The group also performed a STEM challenge. Using 15 jellybeans and 10 toothpicks, club members had to build a shelter for a marshmallow Peep. Summit Super Stars teamed with Guthrie County 4-H Club, Grant Sky Eagles, to fill 800+ Easter eggs for the Adair City Easter Egg Hunt. Cleaned the Adair City Park with extension and chamber staff and donated to the Adair Fire Department, A-C Carnival, A-C food pantry and A-C Art department. Orient Bulldogs assisted with the April Clover Kids session and are raising money for improvements at the Adair County fairgrounds. Richland Royals cleaned at the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines and are scheduled to clean at Orient Lake. Summerset Citizens raised funds to put assistive playground equipment in the Fontanelle park for individuals with disabilities. Washington Stars held a Daddy/Daughter Dance, cleaned up basketball and tennis courts at the Bridgewater Activity Center, cleaned the Bridgewater Park and helped with the Bridgewater Easter Egg Hunt and games. Storm Hoadley was elected to State 4-H Council and received a State Award for Civic Engagement. Zayden Rawlings received a State Award for Civic Engagement. Carter Goetz was the recipient of a dairy goat through the American Dairy Goat Association Share a Kid Program.Carter also organized the assistive playground equipment project at the Fontanelle Park.

Adair County 4-Her’s in ACTION

June 1 Deadline for State 4-H Youth Conference

“A Universe of Possibilities” is the theme for 2019 State 4-H Youth Conference to be held on the ISU campus in Ames June 25 – 27

th. Any Iowa youth who has completed 8th - 12th grade is eligible to attend. Cost is $180 (includes

t-shirt). Adair County 4-H’ers are eligible for a rebate of 75% of the cost for 1st time attendees, and 50% of the cost for those who have previously attended.

You don’t have to be a 4-H’er to attend. Invite your friends. Let’s have a large delegation going to Conference!

Sunday, June 2, Dog Handling Classes Begin

The first Dog Handling class on Sunday, June 2nd is mandatory, 6 – 7:30 pm at the Fairgrounds. Bring Rabies vaccination certificate to the 1

June 3rd Order Deadline for County Fair T-shirts Each Adair County 4-H Club member, Cloverbud, Clover Kid, Club Leader, County Fair Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent are able to purchase ONE t-shirt for the special price of $5.00 (Special thanks to Adair County Corn Association for funding support). Each additional t-shirt priced as follows: S, M, L (Youth and Adult) and XL Adult - $8.00; XXL - $10.50, 3X - $12.50, 4X - $13.50. Heathered Blue, Gold or White shirts with grey and green imprint.

4-H County Fair Kick-Off on Thursday, July 11

Adair County Youth Action Committee and Extension Council will be hosting the event in the 4-H/FFA Center on the Fairgrounds. Meal will be served from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. 4-H clubs are encouraged to organize children’s games and activities for the evening entertainment. Email [email protected] with your club plans. Communication Share the Fun participants will per-form at 6 pm. Adair County Fair King and Queen candidates will be introduced at 7 pm. Contact Emily if you are able to perform.

Adair County 4-H/FFA Exhibit Building Judging Day

Judging will be held Tuesday, July 16th. All building entries are due July 1st to the Adair County Extension Office. Attach blank hang tags to all entries prior to bringing them to judging. A FairEntry tag will be stapled to the attached blank tag at check-in.

After judging, stop at the check-out table to pick up ribbons and turn in your static entry report to Adair County Extension staff.

Club judging schedule will be found in your fair book. Schedule and times will be the same as last year.

Adair County 4-H/FFA Livestock Check-In

Check in times and schedules can be found in your fair book and are the same as last year. When you arrive with animals at the

2019 Adair County Fair, exhibitors will be responsible for checking in with the livestock superintendent of their species. Exhibitors

will be given entry tags for each animal entered as of July 1st and will bring the entry tags of the animals that are on the grounds

to Emily for official “livestock on grounds” check-in.

County Fair Packets for Leaders

Two meetings have been scheduled for 4-H Club Leaders/FFA Advisors to pick up County Fair club/chapter packets. Please pick the date that is most convenient for you and contact Emily at [email protected] with the date you will be attending.

Volunteer Leader Training for 2018-19 should be completed by July 1.

IT IS A REQUIREMENT

Iowa 4-H requires all 4-H leaders (organizational, assistant, and countywide project leaders, including Shooting Sports volunteers) to partici-pate in one training each year. This year’s training focuses on “4-H Fosters Independence”. Please do so as soon as possible. Instructions for completing online –

Step 1: Access the pre-learning and supporting documents on the 4-H website under Volunteer Resources, Annual Training Resources (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/volunteerresources).

Review the three pre-learning resources prior to completing the online training. It will be beneficial to preview or print the three supporting doc-uments as well.

Step 2: Access the online annual training of “4-H Fosters Independence” via 4H Online, link below as well as step by step instructions.

Open a web browser (use Firefox, Safari, or Chrome as IE does not always work) and type in: iowa.4honline.com Login to 4H Online using your family email address and login information. Click “Continue to Family.” Find your name and click “Edit” on right side by your name. On the top of the page click on the “trainings” option. Click the “Sign up for a training” option on the upper right side of screen. View the trainings listed and click “Sign up” next to the annual training online version “2018-19 Leader Training (4-H Fosters Inde-

pendence).” Click “Take the Course” to get started.

Step 3: Upon completion of the online training be sure to click to receive your certificate! By clicking on the certificate you have verified completion of the course, you can also print or save the certificate.

A full week county fair pass will be provided to 4-H community club leaders who have completed the Volunteer Training by July 1 and who will not be receiving a week fair pass in another county fair volunteer role.

Deadline for 4-H Enrollment Forms and ID Sheets

4-H Enrollment Forms – Only those youth who have enrolled online or by paper application are eligible to show at

the Adair County Fair and are covered by the 4-H Program Insurance. If you have not yet enrolled, please contact

the Adair County Extension Office immediately at 641-743-8412 or email [email protected]

ID Sheets for Bucket/bottle calf, breeding heifer, cow-calf, feeder calf, horse, dog, dairy, dairy goat, meat goat

does, and breeding sheep are due Wednesday, May 15th. All market beef, market lambs, bottle lambs, meat goats,

market and breeding swine have been identified at the time of tagging.

Livestock and/or animals intended to be shown at the State Fair must be ID’d using 4honline by May 15th. Go here

bring a paper copy of your ID sheet to the Extension office or enter the information yourself in 4honline by May 15th.

Scouting and Managing for Winter Injury in Alfalfa

Reports of winter injury in alfalfa fields are coming in across the state. Old man winter along with other management factors can take a toll on alfalfa stands. Older stands, stands that were harvested between mid-September and late October, and stands with minimal stubble appear to have suffered the worst winter injury. Additionally, in many fields it is obvious where the snow drifted and provided insulation and protec-tion as those parts of the field are the greenest. Below are issues observed in alfalfa fields across the state along with resources on how to manage fields with winter injury.

Cold temperature exposure. In some cases, the crown/upper taproot could not tolerate exposure to cold temperatures. Alfalfa tolerance to winter is complicated, as discussed in an earlier ICM News article, “Alfalfa Winter Survival - A Complicated Subject”. Several factors typi-cally contribute to stand loss.
