‘CYC Word on the Beach’ August 2019
Hi CYC members,
Welcome to this freshly named newsletter – ‘CYC Word on the Beach’. Thanks to those who made
suggestions but more so please now add your input to future editions.
As we bring you this August Edition there is Spring in the air. A few nice pods of dolphins feeding with
the diving Gannets, Cormorants, Shearwaters and Gulls and even a couple of young dolphin pups
very close to shore this past week. Despite some crazy August weather, we are now seeing some fine
days, later sunsets and even people swimming. Days are getting longer, water is getting warmer by
the day and clear skies, so dust of your summer gear, get down to the club and perhaps be one of the
first to get your boat on the water - don’t wait for the CYC racing season to start.
It has been a busy month with a big highlight being the very good turn up to the club working bee on
17th August. A big thanks to the thirty or so members who turned up and achieved heaps. Our
Discover Sailing Center looks better than ever, our Pacers are good to go, the club PA system has
been revamped, we have had some new members join, we held another successful Stand Up Paddle
Boarding day on 18th August, there has been many new faces enjoy a social catch up in the members
lounge/bar on Friday and Saturday nights, we are already getting registrations and commitments from
sailors to participate in our CYC Four Of A Kind (FOAK) regatta and our Back to Chelsea events
scheduled for February 2020.
Our system shows that more of you are reading the news being sent around. The Committee is very
committed to increasing the information flow to/from members so please keep spreading the word to
your fellow members for everyone to check their email junk folder settings and/or advise of email
address changes to ensure everyone is receiving club emails and notifications.
It has been great catching up with CYC members who have called or dropped into the club for a chat,
something new emerges every week and I always say energy breeds energy so keep it up. Read on
to see what is happening in September onwards. See you around the club.

A touching donation to Chelsea Yacht Club
The club recently collected a kind donation from the Miles
family of Edithvale. Mal Miles, a life long water lover and
keen windsurfer, passed away in January this year whilst
doing what he loved, windsurfing. Mal’s wife Liz said Mal
would love to think his gear is to be used by a club
passionate about introducing others to a love of the water
and windsurfing. Liz is delighted to know about what we
are doing here at Chelsea and will hopefully get down to
the club soon to join us on the water for a SUP session.
Thank you Liz for a very kind and heartfelt gesture.

It was a very productive day with a range of improvements and tidy ups achieved - from painting the
exterior; tidying up the Sabot area to make way for our Stand Up Paddle storage; a tidy up of the
control tower; a major tidy up of the boat
shed; pre-season overhaul of the safety
boats; scrub and
prep for painting of
the main entry,
stairway and hall;

fixing leaks on the upper deck; sanding and painting the emergency stairway; sanding woodwork
ready for a paint touch up; fixings to down-pipes; removal of rubbish; a tune up of the boatshed
doors; and a major refurb of the Discover Sailing Centre training room –
this was a fantastic days work and has
given the club a real lift.
Anyone who couldn’t come
and help at the working
bee and wanting to give
just a few hours please
contact Andrew Ford
[email protected] or Quentin. There are a
few easy jobs still to be finished and ideal for people with
just a few hours to spare. You can pick a time that suits you. Come down and work solo or grab
another member. It would be great to finish the remaining work off before our season opening and
it will make you feel good, we promise!
CYC second Stand Up Paddling event defies the weather sceptics
On Sunday 18th August CYC hosted our second Stand Up
Paddle event in partnership with George and his friends from
SUP Victoria.
Once again SUP Vic ran the day which involved a short race
for some and a social paddle for others.
Despite some weather sceptics get a bit anxious
in the days prior to the day, we held our nerve and
once again it was a great day with the weather
turning out to be much better than predicted.
We will be running more of these events and will
be hosting the SUP Vic Christmas paddle in
December.

CYC Presidents report of Committee highlights – August meeting
A key topic of discussion at the August CYC Committee meeting was consideration of the latest City
of Kingston (CoK) advice regarding tender release and works completion timelines for the CYC lift
installation and how best to proceed given some unavoidable timeline realities.
As covered in my previous Presidents report the latest advice shows that it will not possible to
complete the lift installation prior to the sailing season. The period required for tender allocation, lift
shaft installation, significant flow on building reconfiguration and actual manufacture of the lift
revealed that CYC would become a building site for the entire sailing season and lift delivery lead time
resulting in the lift being installed ~April 2020.
Building code requirements mean that the building reconfiguration required is more significant than
first expected and the cost of doing the lift as a phase one project in advance of the overall CYC
building refurbishment creates duplicate work, duplicate facility interruption, significantly more cost
overall and more cost required to be borne by CYC.
As a result of these factors the CYC Committee have resolved to not commence lift works before the
sailing season and in the intervening period look to pursue a better option with council aimed at
bringing the total works package forward form the currently planned 2022/23 start and completing the
lift works and overall building works as one package. If a better option cannot be found the choice to
commence lift works immediately after the sailing season as a phase one work is still available
Based on this decision CYC President has written to Council seeking reconsideration of funding
timing and we are hopeful that Council will consider this matter at their September meeting. Pending
Council response, the CYC Committee will further consider best way forward at the October CYC
Committee meeting.
Other committee considerations included:
• Approving supplier for Harry Flint trailer replacement – cost $4840
• CYC hall hire fees and decision to discontinue hire of hall for 16th and 18th Birthday functions
• Australian Sailing Marine Act Code of Practice and CYC compliance planning
• Developing club apparel
• CYC Discover Sailing Centre reaccreditation
• Building CYC pool of people accredited to Australian Sailing power boat handling requirements
• Approving minor works required to CYC Rigid Hulled Inflatable – estimated cost $2500
• CYC to apply for VicHealth Active Club grant
• Exploring grants/sponsorship opportunities, initiative to be coordinated by Club Manager
CYC Weather legend
Congratulations to last our July legend Peter Boyle,
closest overall by a tiny margin. Wind was 19 knots
260 Degrees.
For those of you who didn’t read last months
newsletter, each month a photo will be taken at
random along with a recording or the actual wind
direction and speed. Look at the August photo (next
page), taken from the CYC control tower during
August and estimate the wind direction and wind speed? The closest ‘guess’ each month will have

bragging rights as the monthly weather legend and will enter the legends ladder to compete for the
2019/20 CYC weather legend title.
Here is the August photo. Submit your estimates before 20th September 2019. To enter simply email
[email protected] with your name and your most accurate estimate of wind speed
in knots and wind direction ideally in degrees or you can use compass bearings (eg WSW or ESE etc)
at the time this photo was taken.
That’s it for this edition but please visit the CYC website for further information. Please don’t forget to email [email protected] with stories or suggestions for future newsletter editions.
Thanks
