GAME THEMES • The 2016 season is the Wildcats' 58th and final season at Shotwell Stadium, which opened in 1959. The Wildcats are 176-103-3 (.629) in the previous 57 seasons, including 23-8 since 2010. ACU has posted six unbeaten seasons at home: 1963, 1973, 1974, 1978, 2011 and 2013. ACU will begin playing at its new on-campus stadium in September 2017.

• The 2016 season marks ACU’s final season of its program’s four-year transition from NCAA Division II status to full NCAA Division I affiliation. When the Wildcats complete the transition before the 2017 season begins, ACU football’s program – as well as ACU’s entire athletics department – will be eligible to reach Southland Conference and NCAA post-season play.

SERIES INFORMATION • Saturday's game marks the 17th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Bears with ACU holding a 10-5-1 series lead. The Bears, however, have dominated the series of late with five straight wins dating back to 1987.

• The Wildcats won the first seven games in the series (1970-71, 1976-79 and 1981) before a 13-13 tie in 1982. ACU then won games in 1984, 1985 and 1986 to run its all-time record to 10-0-1 against the Bears.

• But Northern Colorado turned the tied in 1987 with a 35-30 win over the Wildcats in Greeley, Colo., and has won every game played since then to cut ACU's lead in the all-time series to 10-5-1.

• The Bears ran their winning streak over the Wildcats to five games last season with a 40-36 win over ACU in the season finale for both teams in Greeley, Colo.

• The Wildcats have won their 10 games over the Bears by an average of 12.1 points per game, while Bears have won their five games over the Wildcats by an average of 8.2 ppg.

OTHER NOTES

• ACU is playing its 95th season of college football in 2016. The Wildcats enter the season with an all-time record of 484-403-32 (.545 winning percentage). ACU should be playing its 98th season of football, but it didn’t field a team from 1943-45 because of World War II.

• In last Saturday's game against Air Force, quarterback Dallas Sealey hit redshirt freshman running back Tracy James with a 76-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to make it a 37-21 final. The 76-yard TD pass is the longest touchdown pass to a freshman – true freshman or redshirt freshman – in 94-plus years of Wildcat football.

• Playing his first game at weakside linebacker since his freshman season of 2014, junior Sam Denmark – who led the Southland Conference in tackles in 2015 with 138 and led FCS football in solo tackles with 90 from his middle linebacker spot – had just five total tackles (three solo) against Air Force. That's the fewest tackles he's recorded in a game since he had three tackles in a 27-21 loss to Northern Arizona on Sept. 6, 2014. He didn't record double digits in a game until the ninth game of his freshman season (Oct. 11 vs. Ave Maria), but from that point on, he had recorded double-digit tackle totals in 12 of the ensuing 14 games through the end of the 2015 season.

• Junior outside linebacker Bryson Gates might have played his best game as a Wildcat against Air Force, recording more than eight tackles in a game for the first time, finishing with 11 in the loss to the Falcons. He also had one tackle for a loss for a 7-yard loss.

• Of the Wildcats 22 starters on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball last Saturday against Air Force, 15 were different from last year's season-opener at Fresno State. Nine of the 11 starters on offense were different with only running back De'Andre Brown and center Austin Hisler back in their starting spots. On defense, only defensive end Dylan Douglass, defensive tackles LaMarcus Allen and Josh Bloom, linebacker Sam Denmark and safety D.J. Arnold returned to their starting spots.

LAST WEEK FOR NORTHERN COLORADO • The Bears enter Saturday’s game at 1-0 on the season after a 56-27 home win last week over NAIA member Rocky Mountain College. Northern Colorado, which ended last season with a 40-36 home win over the Wildcats to clinch its first winning season in 12 years, was led in its season-opening win by quarterback Jacob Knipp, who completed 11 of 16 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while the Bears also ran for 272 yards as seven different players carried the ball. Last year’s top rusher, Trae Riek, had just 55 yards on 11 carries before sitting out the secondhalf of the contest.

• Northern Colorado’s defense limited RMC to just 57 yards on the ground, but allowed quarterback Chase White to complete 31 of 51 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns.

LAST WEEK FOR ACU • The Wildcats will try to bounce back from last Saturday’s season-opening 37-21 loss at Air Force, which has been picked to finish second in the FBS Mountain West Conference. ACU trailed 28-7 at halftime, but cut the lead to 28-14 in the third quarter and had a chance to make it a 28-21 game late in the quarter before finally missing a field goal that seemed to signal ACU’s last chance to win.

• ACU was led by quarterback Dallas Sealey, who completed 16 of 33 passes for 259 and three touchdowns, including throws of 43 yards to D.J. Fuller (five catches for 109 yards) and 76 yards to Tracy James.

• Defensively, the Wildcats gave up 401 rushing yards to the ground-oriented Falcons. However, the Wildcats also forced two turnovers and allowed nine points in the second half.

• Sophomore middle linebacker Gavin Burford led the Wildcats with 12 tackles in his first start in the middle. Burford had 15 tackles during the entire 2015 season Junior outside linebacker Bryson Gates finished with 11 tackles and two tackles for loss in one of his best games as a Wildcat.

ACU HEAD COACH KEN COLLUMS • Saturday's 37-21 loss at Air Force dropped fifth-year ACU head coach Ken Collums to 22-24 overall (.478 winning percentage), although four of his career losses are against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs: New Mexico State, Georgia State, Fresno State and Air Force. In all other games, the Wildcats are 22-20 in Collums' four-plus seasons as the head coach.

• Collums is in his fifth season as the head coach, which is tied with A.M. "Tonto" Coleman (1942, 46-49) and Gary Gaines (2000-04) for the eighth-longest tenure in ACU football history. A.B. Morris is the leader with 18 seasons (1924-41), followed

PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY• Saturday’s game is also the fourth “Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day” at ACU, benefitting the Play 4 Rex Foundation. The foundation was established following the passing of Rex Fleming, son of ACU associate director of athletics for media relations Lance Fleming and his wife, Jill. Rex passed away in November 2012 after a two-year battle against brain cancer. The P4X Foundation was established in January 2013, and in the three years since its establishment, the foundation has raised more than $200,000 to provide iPad Minis and financial assistance to pediatric cancer patients and their families at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth and Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. The foundation has also donated more than $45,000 to the new Hendrick Hospice Facility and the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Both Northern Colorado and ACU will be wearing helmet stickers in recognition of the event. Members of the ACU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be in the stands during the game to pass the bucket for donations to the P4X Foundation.

FIFTH SEASON • 14TH SEASON AT ACU

Head Coach

he 2016 season will mark Ken Collums’ fifth season as the 19th head football coach in ACU history. In four previous seasons as the head coach, Collums is 22-23 overall and 7-10 in the Southland Conference. He has led ACU through the first three years of transition to the NCAA Division I level with 2016 set to be ACU’s final year before it eligible to win the conference championship and compete for an FCS playoff bid in 2017. Last season, the Wildcats had the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in cornerback Jabari Butler and the Student-Athlete of the

Year in middle linebacker Sam Denmark. The junior middle linebacker from Las Cruces, N.M., led FCS football in solo tackles (90) and was fourth in both total tackles (138) and tackles per game (12.5). In 2014, Collums led ACU to a 6-6 overall record and a 4-4 league mark. ACU finished tied for fifth in the league after a

season-ending 37-35 road win over 24th-ranked Stephen F. Austin. Collums coached sophomore quarterback Parker McKenzie to a spectacular season in his first year as the starter. McKenzie threw for 3,084 yards and 22 touchdowns, earning honorable mention all-conference honors and becoming the fourth ACU quarterback under Collums’ tutelage to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. The Wildcats were again one of the best teams in the conference and in the nation in turnover ratio as ACU was plus-9 in the category (16 turn-overs and 25 takeaways). The Wildcats were

among conference leaders in points per game (32.7 ppg), yards per game (438.0 ypg), passing yards per game (275.3 ypg) and rushing yards per game (162.7 ypg). In his first season as the head coach (2012), Collums led the Wildcats to a 7-4 record in their final season as a member of NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. In 2013 – ACU’s first season at the NCAA Division I FCS level – Collums’ offense was one of the nation’s most prolific. While he gave up play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Nathan Young, Collums still had an impact on the design and implementation of game plans and play calls each week. Collums served as the offensive coordinator at ACU from 2005-11, directing some of the most exciting and dominant offensive units in NCAA Division II history. Since he re-joined the ACU coaching staff prior to the 2005 season, Collums’ offenses have ranked among the best in the nation. ACU ranked in the top seven in NCAA Division II football in total offense five times in his last eight years, including first in 2008, second in 2007, third in 2011 and fourth in 2006. The pass offense was ranked third twice and sixth twice, and the rushing offense ranked as high as ninth in the nation (2008). As a freshman at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to the 1991 NAIA national title. In four seasons as the starting quarterback, he directed his team to a combined record of 30-8-3. Collums graduated from Central Arkansas in 1995 with a B.S. in kinesiology. He and his wife, Robyn, have two children: a daughter, Anna, and a son, Layne.
