WE WANT

FOR OUR CREW

Meet our very own ‘Master Chef’ - Greg Stanger.

Greg joined Activus as Client Services Manager in July 2017, attracted by the challenge to do something entirely different by giving back to the community after 20 years in the Hospitality Industry.

His desire to positively improve life for people in the community and join Activus stems from involvement by other family members in the disability sector.

Gregs’ most recent role as Operations Manager for a Food Distribution company saw him coordinate food supply and distribution services to over 200 clubs and restaurants across the South Coast of New South Wales. Prior to this Greg had worked as Head Chef and was a Small Business Owner. This experience fitted well with our needs at Activus.

Greg has taken great pride in his role as Client Services Manager where he is responsible for managing the Client Services Team, Scheduling Team, rostering staff and volunteers and liaising with our transport and bus hire clients. He has brought a unique and refreshing approach to the Activus business with a ‘can do’ hands on approach.

He finds inspiration from anyone willing to work hard, withstand adversity and still be able to put others before themselves.

Greg & wife Tammy have a cheeky 6 year old son named Kaiden who is all set to start his first year of School in 2018. Having grown up in Loftus and with most of his family residing in the Sutherland Shire - Greg has a broad knowledge of the area.

He especially enjoys the outdoor lifestyle of the Shire. Greg is actively involved in the local community Summer Sevens Soccer Competition and coaches his sons’ sports teams. A good old-fashioned camping trip from time to time gets him even closer to the great outdoors.

Spotlight on a Staff Member: Greg Stanger

Two long established Shire non profit charity organizations have joined forces to create awareness of the services each offers to Shire residents. Activus Transport and 99.7fm 2SSR.

According to Roslyn Morton, Activus Transport’s General Manager “This may seem like a strange mix. Community Transport and Community Radio. But each plays a strong role in keeping some of the Shire’s less mobile or older residents well informed, entertained and engaged with family, friends and the Shire community”.

The partnership is a cross promotion with a sponsorship by Activus of one of the most popular radio segments on every Wednesday morning with Gloria G on 99.7FM. Activus will also promote awareness of 2SSR with vehicle signage on it’s fleet of 22 vehicles that circulate daily around the Shire.

Tony Blain of 2SSR first approached Activus because the easy listening format of Gloria’s show seemed to fit with the more mature demographic of the Activus Transport clients. Their distinctive vehicles also provided the opportunity for some mobile billboards to spread the word about 2SSR 99.7fm in the Shire.

The two teams also wanted to try something new and more engaging for listeners. Their simple yet innovative solution is a request a tune concept, a first for the Shire’s Community Radio.

Each week up to 10 listeners will get to sit back, remember when and reminisce with their kind of music. Perhaps a tune that may recall a very

special occasion or someone in his or her life. Something that may not have been heard on the airwaves for decades.

For 2018 Gloria G’s Wednesday morning radio program will be called the Activus Transport “Melodies on Wheels” show. To make a request, simply visit the 2SSR or Activus websites or call 8555 0000 and request a special tune or favorite artist. 2SSR’s Gloria G will find it in their extensive music archive.

To listen online or find out more check out the websites at 2ssr.com.au or activustransport.org.au.

ACTIVUS TRANSPORT | 2018ACTIVUS NEWS | MARCH/APRIL EDITION

With over 4,000 Activus clients from the Sutherland Shire, taking more than 50,000 trips annually. Activus Transport is a vital transport option for many in the local area.

However, our clients are not restricted to travelling only within the Shire. We have seen a growth in the demand for services travelling outside of the Shire especially for medical services. Over many years, Activus has broadened its services to satisfy this growing number of clients with many and varied needs. But as a non-profit charity with a largely volunteer workforce and diminishing Government funding. This increasing demand has previously meant stretched resources and difficulty in meeting the needs of some clients.

Ron Gogic, owner of Kat Hire a local hire car fleet came up with a tailor made solution to our dilemma. A ‘premium city service’ using a combination of luxury people movers and hire cars in his fleet.

This collaboration has created some new services to cater for the extra demand for City medical and later return journeys for other destinations such as St George Hospital. The integration was relatively easy, as Kat Hire has worked with Activus over many years for trips that were outside of our area or after hours.

With seniors being born way before technology has boomed, they usually can’t understand the way technology works. It is a known fact that they usually have a hard time finding their way around the use of recent technological advancements like smartphones, computers, and other technology devices.

In spite of this, technology has been of great help to seniors in making their lives easier and more efficient especially once they get used to it. It may take some time for seniors to get a hang of it, but with a little guidance from their loved ones, they can definitely use technology to their advantage in no time.

These are the different aspects in the life of seniors that technology has helped with the most:

Socialization: Some seniors may have lost touch with people they know from the past, but with technology, they are able to get updates of the lives of their loved ones. Just by using their smartphones and by downloading social media apps, they can easily find people they have already lost in touch with. Furthermore, there are also seniors who are not physically able to go to places to see their relatives and friends. Technology can be a tool for them to be able to communicate with their loved ones even if they’re away.

Safety: There are seniors that live away from their loved ones, or there are times where they are left at home with no one to look after them. Luckily, with all the new technological advancements these days, safety apps for seniors have been made to improve their lives and also the lives of their loved ones by ensuring their safety. For example, the www.seniorsafetyapp.com has a lot of features like fall alert and location monitoring with Geo-fence alerts. The latter allows you to set a specific location and if the senior leaves that location, it will alert you. The app also has an inactivity tracker that will alert you of inactivity for a set period of time.

Local Shire business helps Activus improve services

How Technology is Helping Seniors

Our clients don’t need to change anything and bookings are made in the usual way with the Activus client services team. With the aid of our computer system, Ron coordinates the pick-ups and client contact so clients receive a personalised service.

Ron’s focus is getting each passenger to his or her appointment on time whilst enjoying the experience. Afternoon pick-ups from the city or St George Hospital now no longer need the cumbersome taxi voucher system as the new premium city service makes it more convenient and personal for our clients.

The new Premium City Service has been trialled and enhanced over recent months. The feedback from clients has been very positive, so why not try it out?

The Activus client services staff will guide you through the booking for our new service next time you need to travel to the city or St George Hospital.

Entertainment: Technology has also helped seniors to still enjoy life whenever and wherever they are -- even if it’s just in the comfort of their home. They can just download games on their tablets or smartphones that are highly entertaining and easy to learn. There are also games available online that can help seniors improve their mental performances to minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or to delay its effects if ever. Movies and TV shows are also now made more accessible through streaming services like Netflix that are uncomplicated to use. What’s good with these streaming services is that they offer shows and movies that seniors will definitely enjoy.

Convenience: Doing things may be harder for seniors, but technology has paved the way for advancements that can ease seniors’ burden. With technology, even doing groceries that used to require you to go out of the house can now be done even while you’re just sitting in front of the TV. You can now shop for a lot of things online and have them delivered to your house. It’s important for you to be aware of scams and always make sure that everything that you’re buying is authentic. In addition, if you are having a hard time cooking, you can easily have meals delivered to your house through the use of various apps available online.

Health Care: There are apps now that can help remind seniors to take their medications on time if ever they forget. There have also been hospitals that created apps to help their patients in a lot of ways. They allow patients to monitor their medication lists, view their health histories, and scan medical results online. This is helpful for seniors because they won’t have to travel to hospitals or clinics just to access these things. These are a few of the many benefits technology can give to seniors in the aspect of their health.

Conclusion: We should be thankful for the development of technology. Throughout the years, it did not only change our lives but also the lives of our beloved seniors. Above all, they’re the ones who need the absolute support and convenience brought about by today’s technology.
