The touch panel and optical film exhibition is not only about showcasing the latest innovations but providing a valuable platform to interact with clients and exchange technologies. The "FPD International Taiwan" seminar will take place on the sidelines of the exhibition to discuss the world’s most sophisticated industry chain. In addition, Monitech Taiwan 2015, will take place at the same venue at the same time, showcasing intelligent industrial automation technologies and equipment, intelligent monitoring and identification, small handheld devices and components, etc. Activity Report Taiwan Solar Thermal Energy Association The outlook of the solar thermal industry in Taiwan can be encapsulated by, “Price is not the only reason why investments are made in Taiwan – quality, especially when “Made in Taiwan”, is still important in decision-making.” The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Green Trade Project Office is responsible for introducing and showcasing Taiwan’s green high-tech industries to the world. This year we are cooperating with the “Taiwan Solar Thermal Energy Association” to promote Taiwan’s technological advances and increasing deployment of this important clean energy technology. Taiwan is committed to playing its role in the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is aggressively pursuing the development of renewable energy sources as an important step to moving away from its dependence on fossil fuels. Geographically Taiwan has a perfect spot for using sun light compare with other renewable energy such as wind and water, etc. The Taiwan Government’s long running subsidy program for solar water heaters (SWHs), 1986–1991 and 2000–present, is the main driving force for expanding the solar thermal energy market. The programme has already delivered impressive results. By the end of 2013, 3.815 million m2 of capacity had been installed. This produced 0.92 TWh of energy, resulting in equivalent savings of 98.7 thousand tons of oil and a reduction in emissions of 319,000 tons of CO 2 equivalent. The use of SWHs in Taiwan is influenced by many factors including cost-benefit ratios, building use and design, urban density, household composition and the strong wind load of typhoons. Taiwan is also exploring other opportunities to expand solar thermal energy use beyond SWHs to generate electricity for wider household and commercial consumption. The well-orchestrated and concerted efforts of the Taiwan Government, including the passing of the Renewable Energy Development Bill in 2010, have played a crucial role in increasing the deployment of SWHs. However, further legislation is needed to establish a mandatory requirement for the installation of SWHs on all new developments. The long running national subsidy program can continue to be the main driving force for local market expansion. These can work alongside other subsidy programs implemented by regional governments although the relationships between programs needs to be carefully considered. The media should also be used more effectively to enhance public awareness and promote the use of SWHs. All groups in societies, from large businesses to individuals, should be encouraged to take responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, including producing carbon emissions. Finally, alternative subsidy programs for building-integrated solar thermal collectors and industrial heating processes are required for sustainable development of solar heating systems in Taiwan. The “Taiwan Solar Thermal Energy Association” has a global reputation for technology innovation and encouraging development across the world. With the “Made in Taiwan” brand, which ensures good quality and reasonable cost, Taiwan’s solar thermal energy products are the preferred choice for consumers.
