Notes for the teacher
Get Ready! is a two-level course which aims togive pupils a feel for English and to establish asound basis for later learning. Activity Book 1 isdesigned to provide further practice of thelanguage and the skills introduced in Pupil'sBook 1 and Handwriting Book 1.
Each level of Get Ready! i s divided into sixtysteps. Each step in the Activity Book is onepage and it should not be used until pupils havecompleted the equivalent steps in the Pupil'sBook (one page) and Handwriting Book (half apage). Get Ready! also has a Numbers Book foreach level. Each Numbers Book is divided intosixty half-page steps intended for use after theequivalent steps in the Activity Book. Thesequence for a complete step is therefore asfollows:

Handwriting Activity NumbersBook Book Book
Oral WorkThe Activity Book provides reinforcement of theoral work in the Pupil's Book. There are, forexample, 'Say and colour' activities whichrequire pupils to point to pictures and say thewords in a left-right sequence (e.g. Step 12).Other 'Say and colour' activities involve pupilsin forming simple sentences about pictures (e.g.Step 42).
The AlphabetThe sounds of the letters are taught in thePupil's Book, using the formula 'a' for apple, 'b'for boy etc. The 'Say the alphabet' exercises inthe Activity Book are used to teach the names ofthe letters (Steps 3-21), gradually building upthe alphabet as pupils learn the sounds of newletters through the Pupil's Book.
ReadingThere is no 'real' reading in Get Ready! 1, butpupils will learn to recognize letters of thealphabet, acquire left-right orientation and beable to recognize some whole words. TheActivity Book provides a range of exercises toreinforce this and to associate letters with theinitial sounds of words.
Pupils are only expected to read the words orletters in large print. They look like this:
a red planeWords in small print are to indicate to theteacher the language the pupils should be usingorally. They look like this:
Jack has two balloons
WritingActivity Book 1 provides opportunities forcolouring and drawing. These are important forthe development of motor skills. Activity Book 1also gives pupils extra practice in writing bothsingle letters and whole words. These exercisesare carefully matched to the sequence in theHandwriting Book and it is important to use theActivity Book only when the equivalent step inthe Handwriting Book has been completed.
The ApproachAlthough much of the work in the Activity Bookhas been designed for pupils to do on their own,the teacher should always demonstrate first ofall on the blackboard, explaining wherenecessary in the pupils' mother tongue. It is alsoa good idea to revise the language area beingpractised. The aim is for pupils to succeed andbuild up confidence about learning English. This will not happen if they are insecure or ifthey feel that they are constantly being tested.
Get Ready! Teachers Book 1 provides fullnotes on how to use each page of Activity Book 1.
