SocietiesComing to study at Sheffield University isn’t just about getting a degree!

Make friends from across the world! With over 250 student-run societies (see overleaf), there’s something to suit everyone. Being part of a society is a great way for you to grow in confidence and lead fantastic projects, whilst having fun and making friends from across the world.

To find out more, check out the Activities Fair in Intro week and the Ultimate Fair in February, visit the Activities Info Point or take a look at the Union website. It’s also a good idea to join the ‘Sheffield Union Societies’ Facebook group to keep up to date.

Joining a society is a brilliant way to continue a passion or discover a new love. However, if we haven’t got what you’re looking for, then ask the Activities Officer how set up your own society.

Give it a Go Give it a Go really is the most fabulous of all activity programmes – giving you the chance to try new things, meet new people, learn new skills and visit different places around the UK. Put simply, it’s an activities extravaganza!

Fancy a day trip? With Give it a Go, you can try out bellydancing or jewellery making, learn how to snowboard or do Shiatsu massage, plus countless other experiences… all on a no-commitment, pay-as-you go basis.

Pay as you go and have fun! Thousands of students take part every year, and so should you! There are three main Give it a Go programmes throughout the year, plus tons of fun things going on in Intro week. Getting involved is easy: simply choose which activities you want to do, then buy a ticket in advance from the Students’ Union Box Office.

VolunteeringVolunteering is a wonderful way to spend your free time. You’ll meet amazing new friends, do cool stuff for free (like taking kids quad biking or learning how to dry stone wall) and get to explore Sheffield.

We have over 200 options – with lots in student neighbourhoods and the city centre. Oh, and did we mention, you’ll get plenty of that ‘warm and fuzzy’ feeling too?

“So little time can make so much difference to someone’s life.” Student Volunteer You can do something just for a day or give a couple of hours each fortnight. It’s flexible and you won’t be asked to help during exams or vacations.

Plus volunteering helps you stand out from the crowd! You can access free training and get brilliant CV experience and references – all of which can open doors to future jobs.

So if you want to get more out of your degree or you’re just looking forsomething totally fresh to do with your time, SheffieldVolunteering is waiting to hear from you. Find us in the Activities Zone, Mon to Fri, 10am - 5pm.

Charitable Fundraising

If you’re interested in raising money for charity, putting on a crazy event for a good cause, or doing your bit for worthwhile local causes... then get involved with the RAG (Raising and Giving) team.

RAG put on events throughout the year, from bungee jumps and bar crawls, to sponsored hitch-hikes and a cross-Europe treasure hunt! Some events, like Spiderwalk, allow you to raise money for your club or society.

With RAG, you can either help organise and plan these events, or simply take part in them to raise sponsorship money. Oh, and they’re quite a lot of fun as well!!

“RAG gets me out of bed in the morning” To talk through your fundraising ideas or to find out more about RAG events, come and see Emma, the Community Fundraiser, in the SheffieldVolunteering office, Activities and Sports Zone.

Communities Activities in Your Student Community If you belong to one of the following student communities: Endcliffe Village; Ranmoor Village; or City, you’ve paid a ‘Community Contribution’ in your rent. This is used to make your Student Community a great place to be – by putting on all sorts of activities and events for you.

The Student Communities is a project with the University and the Students’ Union working together to put on a massive programme of stuff for you from beach parties, band nights and karaoke, to sports tournaments, film nights, dance classes and ice-skating trips.

Help YOU put on your very own events and activities and be a student leader.

So make sure you get involved! Find out more:

email: [email protected]: www.sheffield.ac.uk/union/communities

P.S. Look out for the Give it a (little) Go classes if you live in the Endcliffe or Ranmoor communities. See your Digs magazine for details.
