Phase 3 – Next Targets
Positional Statements
Active Workspace is transformative for users
Repositions Teamcenter asEnterprise Centric, not just Engineering
Lots of configuration effort req’d

2 Key Projects saved PLM -Active Workspace & Analytics
Business Requirements
PLM Rich Client is too hard, too complex, too slow• Difficult to use for enterprise users
• Commercial, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality
• Only really useful for everyday, hard core PLM users• Engineering, Design
• Hard to navigate the complex business and data model
Need a faster, easier, intuitive interface• Finding parts and drawings• Reviewing change, perform workflow signoff
Business Drivers
Relaunch Change Management• Engage cross-functional organization
Faster access to all product and program information
• Simple, intuitive search
Simplified IT Governance• Zero client footprint – eliminate software installs• Agile configuration deployment
Business Expectations
Early Marketing Hype• Easy to implement and use• It just works• Rapid and agile deployment of new business process• Full blown change management capability in AWC
Intuitive, easy, fast
Minimal training required
Google like search capability
Visualization – same of similar functionality to Rich Client
Mobility – smartphone and tablet access to PLM

Feasibility Analysis / Version Compatibility
Phase 1 Teamcenter Version 10.1.4.2
Only compatible with AWC 2.4
AWC 3.x only available at Tc10.1.5 + / Tc11.x +
Could not upgrade immediately to 10.1.5+ / Tc11.x +
CAD Compatibility issues
Feasibility Analysis / Version Compatibility
Decision to launch phase 1 AWC on 2.4
Realization that this had functionality implications
Limited configurability for data authoring
Challenges with naming rules
Didn’t support Process Assignment Lists
Visualization Markups not consistent with Rich Client

Not Capable in AWC 2.4
Map Business & Data Model
Identify key elements of Rich Client

Tc10 Change Object
Classic Change (legacy change object)
Search & Queries
Stylesheet Definitions
Realization that we need hundreds of stylesheets
Stylesheet Definitions
Item Types = 20+
Attributes = Hundreds
Forms = Dozens
Alternate ID’s = Customer Part #’s, ERP Part #’s
Dataset types = Dozens
Tc10 Change Object
Rich Client Architecture
Complement Rich Client Multi-Site
3 DB’s – Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe
Production & Development
How many AWC instances – 1 Global or 1 per site?
AWC Architecture – 1 per Tc site
Visualization Streaming
Chose Nvidia K1 cards – 2 per region
Require ability to monitor and measure adoption
Dedicated pool server per AWC instance
AWC Mobility Requirements
Enable Mobility strategy for Tablets and Smartphones
Not authenticated to network
Expose AWC via F5 device (Reverse Proxy)
User authenticates using AD Credentials
AWC Indexing Strategy Development
How much data do we want to index?
If more than 10 million objects, need to move to Solr Cloud
How often do we want to index?
Every 15 minutes
Full Text Search
Is it a requirement?
Challenges and Issues
Indexing Compound Properties
Most of our attributes were properties of a form, not
the item or item revision
Could not index properties on a secondary object
Had to compound to primary object
Not able to Index Secondary objects

Challenges and Issues
Indexing Performance
Needed to understand and build prediction
How long would a full index take?
How long would an incremental index take?
Understanding and interpreting indexing errors
Complex and lengthy log files
Challenges and Issues
Limited Siemens support for “earlier versions”
Tough to find support knowledge on target version AWC 2.4
Limited industry knowledge and experience
Very few reference customers who had already deployed
Challenges and Issues
Stylesheets
Sheer volume of stylesheets required is just staggering
We ended up with over 450 AWC stylesheets
Outcomes and Feedback
Extremely positive reception from business users
Excited / relieved to have an easier to use PLM
Like the look and feel – modernised GUI
Performance is decent
Equal and stable across the globe
Largely insulated from network latency issues
Love the concept of Mobility
Tablets are easier than smartphones – real estate
Not convinced people are actually using it though
Agenda
Phase 1 – Consumer Usage – AWC 2.4
Phase 2 – Authoring – AWC 3.2
Phase 3 – Next Targets
Upgrade to later versions
Teamcenter 10.1.7• Could not go to Tc11 due to NX versions
• Driven by OEM customer requirements
Active Workspace 3.2
Introduce Authoring
New Parts / Revise Parts
Documents
Tc Change (some limitations remain)• Process Assignment Lists• Revise Change
Outcomes and Feedback
Review Metrics in Analytic Dashboard
Alignment to Expectations
Early Marketing Hype – easy to implement and use
Only on industry templates - Automotive Supplier Process etc
Doesn’t necessarily match or meet unique requirements
Alignment to Expectations
Full Blown Change Management Capability
Limitations to authoring capability
No support for Process Assignment List
Cannot revise change items
Alignment to Expectations
Intuitive, Easy, Fast
Definitely better than Rich Client – way better
Intuitiveness is largely dependent on Stylesheet Design
Still a bit cumbersome
Too many stylesheets to expose depth of information
Alignment to Expectations
Minimal Training Required
Not Amazon or Smartphone App easy
Users need training to be aligned to business model
Challenge is to simplify a complex relational data model
How do you simplify a structured data model?
Most users could care less
Alignment to Expectations
Google Like Search
Definitely better than Rich Client
Performance is still not lightning fast
Summary chart of search results has limited config
Alignment to Expectations
Visualization same or similar to TcVis
Very limited functionality
Robustness is not consistent
Markup save creates data model discrepancies
No 2D / 3D comparison
Overall, just OK for basic usage / viewing
Lessons Learned
Do not underestimate how much work is required to configure AWC
Tons of work to design stylesheets
More complex than Rich Client
Layout and Tabs
Requires tremendous amount of planning
Role based design of stylesheets will add exponential complexity
Conditional configurability was limited at AWC 2.4
Lessons Learned
Instant Access to Visualization objects
Did not meet user expectations
Users don’t care about data model or Teamcenterterminology
Items, Item Revisions, Datasets, Part vs Design
Lack of configurable stylesheet capabilities
Could not configure rules to traverse data model and automatically display related Vis Objects
Believe capability is better in AWC 3.2
Target for Phase 3
Lessons Learned
Administrative Burden almost doubled
2 full blown PLM environments now
Rich Client and AWC
Unexpected – stress on configuration team
Lessons Learned
Training
Active Workspace is not fully intuitive
Does require user training
Need to develop realistic objectives and strategy
Self Serve or instructor led or online videos
Development of training material
Agenda
Phase 1 – Consumer Usage – AWC 2.4
Phase 2 – Authoring – AWC 3.2
Phase 3 – Next Targets
Phase 3 Targets
Authoring of remaining Item Types
Alternate ID Authoring
Stylesheet Enhancements
Will be never ending
Visualization Enhancement
Performance
Robustness and Stability
Round Up
