Harmonic ProblemsWith the increased presence of electronics on power distribution systems, disruptive anomalies are created and harmonics can become a problem. These problems are usually manifested as transformer overheating, motor and generator burnout, neutral heating, electronic control malfunctioning, breaker tripping and capacitor failures.

The StacoSine Plus Active Harmonic FilterActive harmonic filters use a DSP control system to monitor the nonlinear load and dynamically correct every harmonic order from the 2nd to the 51st. By injecting a compensating current into the load, the sine wave is restored, attenuating harmonic levels at the point of installation. StacoSine Plus meets or exceeds Total Demand Distortion (TDD) limits specified in table 10.3 of the IEEE 519 Standards. The filter can accept a signal from a CT secondary of 1 amp (standard) or 5 amps with the optional kit that will convert the signal from 5 amps to 1 amp.

The StacoSine Plus’ high speed processor cancels high frequency output current, while it ultimately determines the precise value of injected load current. StacoSine Plus’ IGBT based platform has been designed to operate at levels that continuously adapt to rapid load fluctuations. With its efficient operation and small physical size, it is ideal for a wide variety of industrial and commercial environments.

A Real SolutionThe StacoSine Plus behaves like a harmonics current generator. It measures the harmonics generated from a nonlinear load and cancels the harmonics with a newly generated, opposite phase shifted harmonic current of the same amplitude (AC/DC/AC).

This allows it to:

Eliminate all harmonic currents from nonlinear loads

Compensate reactive power factor of lagging or leading loads

Act as a damping resistor to prevent harmonic resonance

Typical Applications for Active Harmonic Filters Water and waste water treatment facilities

Textile and paper mills

Steel mills and facilities with induction furnaces

Pharmaceutical facilities

Petrochemical plants

Data Centers, servers, printers, and other IT equipment

Hospitals and medical facilities

Solar and wind farms

Material handling facilities

Why StacoSine Plus is A Better ChoiceWith other harmonic mitigation solutions, expensive and time-consuming site data collection, power quality surveys and computer generated studies are usually needed. Most harmonic filters are designed to accommodate just one or a few harmonic orders. The StacoSine Plus corrects a full range of harmonic orders, and will not create a resonance condition with other existing equipment, so only minimal up-front analysis is required. The StacoSine Plus can be easily and conveniently added in parallel with other active filters, to accommodate future facility expansions or equipment additions. Virtually no time is lost for installation, supporting the important uptime operation of your facility.

The rating (size) of the StacoSine Plus is based on nonlinear load requirements (corrective current), not both linear and nonlinear current like traditional filter equipment. That means that you can install a StacoSine Plus system at a reduced ampere rating, which will lower initial capital costs.

While injecting current into the system to mitigate harmonics, the Staco Sine Plus also has the capability to compensate for both leading and lagging power factor. The power factor correction can be programmed to correct from 0.7 lagging to 0.7 leading. It can also be programmed for a fixed amount of kvar.

The user friendly 7” color touch screen display allows for easy operation and maintenance programming of the active filter. This display can control and show the status of the main active filter and up to seven additional active filters connected in parallel with it. This allows for up to 1200 amps of harmonic current to be injected into the power system to mitigate harmonics. Each filter can be controlled from just one location saving valuable maintenance time. Up to 300 events are recorded and logged for each connected filter. To help save energy, the StacoSine Plus can be programmed to shut down when a certain minimum load current is reached and to be energized when that level is exceeded. Optional monitoring software is available to allow the StacoSine Plus to communicate remotely using USB, RS-485 or Ethernet (TCP/IP) interface.

The StacoSine Plus can be set to accept either load side or source side CT signals. This is particularly useful in very tight installations or if the source side connection is at the transformer.

For switchgear and motor control center manufacturers, the StacoSine Plus is available in an open frame chassis design for mounting in a cubicle. Designed and built to the same standards as the enclosed model, this unit allows a manufacturer to include active harmonic filtering inside his equipment for more precise filtering with an integrated look. This reduces the user’s installation time and cost, and uses the least amount of floor space.

The StacoSine Plus Open Frame design has the same characteristics and advantages as the enclosed version so you don’t have to compromise on harmonic mitigation.
