EPRI Report 3002018283 Major Changes: New Aging Topics
◼ New Appendix E of 20+ aging-related topical areas
after 1980 (Issuance of NP-1558)
◼ Each topic grouping contains:
◼ A definition from a resource
◼ Main body citations (if applicable)
◼ Various industry reports related to the topic, with sections
and/or page numbers cited related to the topic

EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Need
◼ Due to the large number of changes to the activation
energy basis originally supplied in EPRI NP-1558,
Report 3002018283, Executive Summary, How to
Apply Results, identifies how it is important for end-
users to search if there are any current uses based
on activation energy values for which EPRI no longer
has publicly available references or were unable to
confirm Arrhenius linear regression calculations.
◼ End users may use any internal tracking mechanisms
deemed necessary to address these changes.

EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Ownership, NRC Background
◼ NRC Inspection Manual IP 71111 Attachment 21N
(https://www.nrc.gov/docs/ML1903/ML19036A556.pd
f), effective February 5, 2019, Att2-5, states:
“Beyond ensuring that vendor programs satisfy the 10
CFR Part 50, Appendix B, requirements and confirming
that EQ equipment is received as procured, licensees
are not required to validate information (e.g., activation
energy) contained in the EQ reports provided by
Appendix B vendors.”

November 2020 IEPSON Presentation 10
EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Ownership, Continued
◼ Secondary (i.e., Not as Many) EQ Program Uses:
◼ EQ Program Manuals
◼ EQ Design Basis Documents
◼ Temperature Monitoring Evaluations

◼ Other Non-Electrical EQ Program use (i.e., Mechanical EQ,
License Renewal Aging Management Guidelines and
Programs, Other)

EPRI NP-1558 Activation Energy Research Steps
1. Determine where EPRI Report NP-1558 is used in
qualification documentation
2. Determine if the activation energy source document
is available
3. Determine if there is an Adequate Basis for Ea:
o Arrhenius Linear Regression calculation
acceptable if applicable
o Adequate technical rigor or conservatism
o Applicable to component function
o Adequate basis considering material used to
determine Ea and material used in the component

EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Searches
◼ Use search tools of plant / utility networks of various
databases such as for Condition Reports, Operating
Experience, etc.
◼ Perform electronic file folder searches of EQ Program
documents
◼ Identify the complete list of plant documents that refer
to EPRI Report NP-1558
◼ Determine which of the above relate to activation
energy (Note: Some plant program documents have
referred to NP-1558 radiation thresholds)
November 2020 IEPSON Presentation 13
EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Source Availability
◼ Determine if source basis was located per EPRI in
Report 3002018283, Table B-1.
◼ If yes, the EPRI Project Manager could be contacted to lead
end-user to source document owner. End users could also
attempt to retrieve document directly from owner, public
searches, or private databases as available (i.e., EQDB).
◼ If no, and if the end user does not already have a copy of the
source basis, another activation energy with a source basis
would be needed.

EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Arrhenius Linear Regression Confirmation
◼ Determine if the Arrhenius Linear Regression
calculation basis was confirmed per EPRI in Report
3002018283, Table B-1 (Arrhenius Linear Regression
calculations were originally performed in EPRI NP-
1558 to determine activation energies).
◼ If yes, the EPRI Project Manager could be contacted to view
calculation. Alternatively, end users could perform internal
calculations to also verify the original result.
◼ If no, another activation energy with a source basis would be
needed.

EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Material Property Applicability
◼ EPRI Report NP-1558, App. B, Section B.1, ended
that “it is essential…to verify the relevance to the
user’s application.” This has been highlighted in bold
and underline in EPRI Report 3002018283 for its
significance.
◼ EPRI Report 3002018283, Section B.1.C provides
information on Activation Energy Selection, including
verification that activation energies are based on
material properties deemed applicable / appropriate
for the credited function of the material or item.
November 2020 IEPSON Presentation 16
EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Material Property Applicability, Continued
◼ Accordingly, the applicability of activation energy
values used from EPRI NP-1558 should have already
been considered for the credited function / material.
◼ If yes, then no further action is needed on this step.
◼ If no, then this basis should be addressed.
November 2020 IEPSON Presentation 17
EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Activation Energy Range Applicability
◼ EPRI Report NP-1558, App. B, Section B.1,
contained various qualifiers that are now highlighted
in bold and underline in EPRI Report 3002018283 for
their significance, including that the listed activation
energies:
◼ Are not an exhaustive tabulation
◼ Were a convenient recording
◼ Were obtained incidentally
November 2020 IEPSON Presentation 18
EPRI NP-1558 Current Qualification Use Activation Energy Range Applicability, Continued
◼ Therefore, for any use of an activation energy value
from EPRI Report NP-1558, determine if there is a
direct link between the manufacturer / material from
the report to the end use.
◼ If yes, then no further action needed on this step.
◼ If no, then further action may be needed, as:
◼ The EPRI NP-1558 values did not show a range of values for a
particular generic material
◼ The EPRI NP-1558 values did not show the most applicable value for a
generic material
◼ The EPRI NP-1558 values were determined in relation to a specific
research focus and therefore may not be applicable for other uses

further information on activation energy selection,
including referral to various industry documents that
have more details on how to perform such selection.
◼ EPRI Report 3002018283, Section B.1.D provides
further information on major sources of activation
energy values, including the EQDB Thermal
Degradation table and the System 1000 Material
Aging and Radiation Effects Library

Conclusions
◼ EPRI Report 3002018283 was issued in 2020 and
supersedes EPRI Report NP-1558
◼ End users of EPRI Report NP-1558 may want to
identify uses of the document and whether the uses
were activation energy related.
◼ End users of EPRI Report NP-1558 activation energy
values should consider any potential changes based
on EPRI Report 3002018283 issuance. Various
factors for potential changes are cited herein.
