Transcript of Actions & emotions

Immanuel Kant was an 18th century German Philosopher, the last influential philosopher of modern Europe during the Enlightenment.

Kant grew up in the Prussian city of Konigsberg.

Kant was famous for his study of the metaphysical body pertaining to hope, and

the will of man.

A phenomenon can be exceptional, unusual or an abnormal event- but it must be perceived through the senses(empirical

data).

According to Kant’s theory, a noumenon is what results in the presentation of a phenomenon.

Phenomenal things are tangible objects to our five senses.

A derivation of a Greek word meaning “I think or I mean”.

Noumena are objects of intellectual intuition; or events known only to the mind, independent from our senses.

Examples: emotion, the imagination and the soul.

“All right, I let you out of it. It’s better than what I’ve got. But every man feels from his soul that he has got to carry his life to a certain depth. Well I have to go on because I haven’t reached that depth yet.”

Henderson is coming to the realization that life is not about material possessions, but rather what one achieves and contributes to the world throughout his/her lifetime.(p.105)

“My soul is like a pawn shop. I mean it’s filled with unredeemed pleasures, old clarinets, and cameras and moth-eaten fur. But “I said, let’s not get into a debate over it. I am only trying to tell you how you make me feel out here in this tribe. You’re great Itelo. I love you. I love the old lady, too. In fact you’re all pretty damned swell, and I’ll do get rid of those frogs for you if I have to lay down my life to do it.”(p.81)

This excerpt reflects Henderson understanding that his life up until now has consisted of his acquisitions of empty tangible belongings. Now he is feeling the sense of belonging to a cause greater than his selfish tendencies.

“Your own soul is killing you. Its you who makes the world what it is. Reality is you.”(p.123) George Bernard Shaw said it best when he said

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

These two quotes correlate because you control your own reality, and life is what you make it; or what you want to get out of it.

The perfect person to compare Henderson with would be batman. They are very much alike in many ways

Both have almost unlimited resources, but a strong void within that makes them search for nuomenons.

There are many similarities between these two fictional characters.

Batman (Bruce Wayne) inherited his family’s multimillion dollar corporation Wayne Enterprises, after his parents were robbed, and murdered before his very eyes.

Now with all the phenomenonal belongings he inherited he still felt he was missing something in life just like Henderson . Then he suddenly departed for Africa.Bruce Wayne leaves his home city of Gotham to find that very thing (noumenonal) that was missing from his life.

Just as Henderson goes through a rebirth with the Wariri tribe. When Bruce Wayne goes off to find that certain thing that’s missing from his life he also goes through a certain rebirth where he learns the way of the warrior, and conquers his fears.

After this Bruce Wayne decides to become the vigilante Batman , to protect his city from danger.

Although he had many riches he looked for something nuemenal in his life which is how he created the alter-ego batman
