Acta Grammatica Winter 2015 The school already has many achievements to be proud of this year. Whether it’s our World Champion Kick Boxer, Tyler Atkin, or our National Motorbike Champion, Mickie Simpson, or Nicholas Doddrell’s superb A-level results (4 A* grades) enabling him to take up his place at Cambridge University. On the academic front, regarding A-level results, the school has been very successful with the traditional, Gold Standard ‘facilitating subjects’ once again. For example, Rachel Sinha achieved three A* grades and two A grades and is pursuing a Medicine course. Jacob Moore has successfully gained a much sought after place at RADA, which is a magnificent achievement. Particularly impressive performances at A Level also included those of Luke Bray, James Buckley, Isaac Charles, Mastervilla Esprit, Lewis Goulder, Edward Jacobs, Shehryar Khan, John Lisle, Tobias Long, Haffi Mazhar, Bilal Minhas, Mohamed Morgan, Mei Roberts, Jack Taylor, Alice Tetther, Michaela Tomovcikova, Danielle Tooley, Rouba Turki, and Chantel Walsh. The History Department has received the 2015 Good Schools Guide Award for ‘The Best performance by Boys taking History at an English Grammar School’. Our international partnerships continue to flourish. Miss Boularand spent a week on job shadowing and language improvement at our new potential partner school IES MARÍA MOLINER in Valencia, Spain. Similarly, Mrs Turner has visited Pargas Svenska Gymnasium, Finland where she was job shadowing and looking into web- based learning. Six pupils (Oliver Verrall, Nathan Emberton, Matthew Little, Bailey Noe, Adrian Kaczmarek and Jessica Petts) travelled with Miss Abrams and Mrs Ellis to our partner school in Germany on an Erasmus+ project on creating webinars. Two pupils, Matthew Wearden and Aleksandra Esteves, accompanied by Miss Abrams attended the Mock European Council meeting in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Locarno Suite, where they represented Cyprus. There have been very productive visits from our French partner school and German partner school. In the not distant future we are looking forward to becoming involved with the Youth Hanse Project and sending two Year 12 pupils to the Hanseatic meeting in Bergen. There will also be a trip to Finland

for the Erasmus+ project and we will be hosting exchange pupils and teachers from Finland and Germany in March. This year’s Charter Day was a great occasion. The focus was on the theme of Excellence. As always, our pupils’ behaviour was brilliant during the procession to St. Botolph’s. The occasion was further enhanced as a colleague (Frederic Loisel) from our partner school in La Providence in Fecamp, Normandy, joined us for the day. The Armistice Service was attended by a relatively large number of Old Boys who joined the student body to mark the occasion. Mr Sharman, President of the Old Bostonians, spoke about four former pupils who were killed in the same World War I battle on the same day. We were joined at the Armistice Service by visiting relatives of a former pupil who had died during combat in the First World War. The Beast Mart ceremony was much appreciated though the rain did dampen spirits somewhat. Hopefully, the students and staff enjoyed the additional rest time which this very popular tradition affords. The ceremony is a remnant of the time when the school yard was the location of the annual Boston Fair. The fair and cattle market was moved from

Bargate to the school yard in the year of the Armada, 1588. The fair grew in popularity and for a time became one of the most important fairs in the East Midlands. Shops were built in and around the school yard! Harvey Potter (Head of School) and his team of Prefects have been exemplary in the way they have helped and supported the school on so many fronts. Their help with the Sixth Form Open Evening and the Sixth Form Taster Day was outstanding! On a much sadder note, ex-Chair of Governors, Mr Jim Howes recently passed away. Mr Howes was an old boy of BGS who attended the school between 1933 and 1940. He lived and worked in Boston throughout his life and went on to be given the freedom of the Borough as a result of his hard work for the town and its people. Mr Howes’ dedication to Boston Grammar School led to his involvement with and leadership of the Old Bostonian Association, the Foundation Governors and the Governing Body. For decades he was one of those entrusted with making the decision about which scholar earned the Parry Gold Medal (the pinnacle of academic achievement at BGS) each year. Amongst his many legacies is the refurbishment of the school Library in 1996. Mr Howes recently brought into school some

photographs showing ‘Speech Day’ (Prize Giving) in the 1930’s and another of himself and some friends with a collection of scrap metal to help with the war effort in the 1940’s. Mr Howes did an enormous amount for our school and he will be missed by all who knew him. After Christmas, Year 12 and Year 13 students will return fully prepared for their trial examinations. Y11 students are just completing their ‘mocks’. The importance of revision and practice with past papers can never be overestimated. Intervention programmes will be in full swing from January to give our students the best possible chance of success in the summer. Dr Sunita Deshmukh, the first young lady to win the Parry Gold Medal will be this year’s guest of honour at Prize Giving. I hope that many parents will be able to join us for this important celebration of last year’s achievements. I would like to wish all pupils, staff and parents a restful and happy Christmas and every success in 2016. Mr J McHenry

Charity News I would like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to anyone who has contributed to the charity appeals held so far this year. After the Summer Fete we were able to make donations to several good causes, including sending some quality left over items to a local charity shop. Our Harvest Festival meant that hungry families in Boston received some basic foodstuffs plus a few extra treats that were generously donated by our school community. The next big

Charity Club The Charity club is getting a lot of new members at the moment and is really proud to say that the new participants do really have a desire to make other people’s lives better. Our first major event this year was in support of “Children in Need”. It took place on Friday 13 November and was great fun! Teachers agreed to organise spe-cial activities in exchange for £1.00 so that we could raise money on top of the non-uniform arrange-ments. The Charity Club tuck shop also was in operation non-stop on that day, and raised more than £200.00 thanks to Adam Jackson, Lorenzo Noakes, Callum Golec and Tom McMeechan. Altogether, we managed to raise a

Boston Grammar School Host STEM Careers Showcase

On Wednesday 18 November, a number of businesses from around the Boston area took part in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Maths) Careers Show-case organised by Boston Gram-mar School. The aim of the event was to raise the profile of the STEM subjects within the school and to increase students’ knowledge of the career paths which are possible through studying these subjects. Students from Years 8 to 13 were able to visit the displays and gain an insight into the range of oppor-tunities which will be available to them when they complete their for-mal education. The event was par-ticularly important for the Year 9 and 11 students who will soon be making their option choices of sub-jects to study in the next stage of their education. Exhibitors included Amec Foster Wheeler, Army Careers, Boston Borough Council, Willmott Dixon representing CITB, Dexter and Sharpe Chartered Certified Ac-countants, Duncan and Toplis Ltd

Chartered Accountants and Busi-ness Advisers, Howard Skinner General Practitioner, University of Lincoln and RAF Careers. Sally Scott, Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for STEM at the school, said “The response from local companies has been very im-pressive and we’re really pleased that the students have had the op-portunity to talk with representa-tives from such prestigious compa-nies. We hope the STEM Careers Showcase will raise student aspira-tions and encourage them to be-come the STEM workforce of the future. We also hope that this will become a regular event at the school.” Student Comments: “I thought that it was really good and that it was a great chance to learn about what you need to do to go in to different jobs. It was great to learn what each job would in-clude.” “I thought it had a nice variety of companies and that they were open for questions. I liked it.” “I found this good because all of the companies had clear displays and the staff were very helpful.” “I found out that to do engineering I need to do well at Physics and Maths.”

for hard working students Outstanding performance by Bos-ton Grammar School in the Engi-neering Education Scheme earns students the Gold CREST award ! All four students (Jason Barnes, Brandon Witham, Nick Millington and Steen Bates) earned the Gold CREST award for their outstanding work with Guttridge in the Engi-neering Education Scheme.

Silver CREST - Congratulations to Abdullah Ahmad, Zain Asif and Mursaleen Asif for completing their Silver Crest Award. Their project was inspired by the visit of The Ryan Smith Foundation and inves-tigated reasons why students don’t wear cycle helmets to school. They then went onto design a helmet that should appeal to students of all ages.

Royal Academy of Engineering Challenge Day

A group of Year 7 students, along with 14 other secondary schools took part in a STEM challenge day that Mr Richards had organised as part of the Royal Academy of Engi-neering collaborative project. The day consisted of various chal-lenges that tested the group’s teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. The students were also made aware of careers and how engineering plays a vital role in all our everyday lives.

The Raspberry Pi club is now more popular than ever, with a host of exciting student projects underway. The Year 7s learning Kodu/Scratch and older members learning the basics of Python and VB are cer-tainly setting themselves up for

success at GCSE. Budding electrical engineers are gaining first-hand experience of physical computing, and develop-ing their workshop skills. The club is student run (by the members), with the opportunity to develop your own projects either individually or as part of a team. Although space is limited I would strongly recommend any student who is keen to develop practical computing/programming skills to come along and give it a go. Year 10 and Year 11 Computer Science students who are keen to develop their programming knowledge and would like the op-portunity to have an active role in the club are more than welcome.

World War One Centenary Trip We (Harry Hopkins and Rob Hayes) were chosen to attend the WW1 Centenary trip which was funded by the Department for Edu-cation (DfE) and Department for Communities and Local Govern-ment (DCLG). The trip was in March 2015. It was a very exciting opportunity and we gained a great deal from it. Unlike conventional battlefield tours, the itineraries in-cluded sites that are rarely visited by schools but that provide addi-tional perspectives and insights in-to the history of the Western Front. We were also very lucky to have had onsite expertise provided by Guild of Battlefield guides, IOE ed-ucators and teacher ambassadors, and the British Army sent a serving soldier (a corporal called Steve) to accompany each tour. Steve was available for us to ask questions to throughout the tour and provided a contrast to serving as a soldier 100 years ago. Visits to the battlefield sites were enhanced by making sure that we (and Miss Neave) had access to digital equipment. This enabled us to consult online historical sources, record and upload our research findings, and share our initial re-flections of what we had experi-enced with classmates and col-leagues back in school. To be chosen for the trip we had to write a letter of application and around a third of us got through to

the interview and of that, two of us were chosen. We had to explain why we should be chosen and what we would do afterwards. The trip was stunning. The vast numbers of graves has an immedi-ate impact. We learnt many new facts as well as the differences be-tween the army back then and now. We had a great time, took lots of photos (we took 634 between us in total), learnt a lot, saw amazing sights and our view on the war had been changed. We made friends from other schools and had a once in a lifetime experience. We also had the Legacy 110 project where each of us (not including Miss Neave) had to tell 110 people about the trip, so, 220 in total on our re-turn. After enjoying the trip, and prepar-ing the Legacy 110 presentation, it was finally time for a presentation at Tower Road Academy which we did on Friday 5 June 2015. On Monday 9 November 2015, we did a similar presentation at Sibsey Free School. The children there had been learning about World War One in line with Remembrance Sunday, and some classes had studied it in a lot of detail last year. The presentation was for the older students (Key Stage Two). We be-gan by showing a power point, con-taining information about the war, and many of ours photographs. This power point presentation last-ed about 10 minutes, and gave them a real idea about some of the

things we had seen and showed why it was important to remember, and celebrate the war more than anything. Many found learning about an ex pupil from Boston Grammar School (whose name was Thomas Comer and whose grave we visited) very interesting. For the second part of the presen-tation, we went into three separate classrooms (all containing the chil-dren who we had just seen). We passed around some of the arte-facts we had found, regarding the trip. The most intriguing was look-ing at the Remembrance Poppy stakes from different religions which are so often in the shape of a cross, are also available in the shapes appropriate for different re-ligions. The shell part that we had been given also attracted a lot of attention as it was an actual shell that had been fired during the war. The presentation concluded with the children asking some questions of their own. A vast amount of hands were raised, and you could see that the children were really in-trigued, as they were asking a lot of intelligent questions. It did come as a surprise to them that no children were evacuated during the First World War. The ex-Boston Grammar School

pupil, Thomas Comer Thomas Comer was born in 1892, and bravely died in the Great War aged 22. He was an ex – pupil, of

both Tower Road and Boston Grammar. He then became a teacher later on. Tower Road great-ly remembers him, on their plaque which his father put up (his father being the head teacher of the school) .All the children recalled seeing it around school. His death was due to an explosion of shells, hitting him in the arm and chest. Despite being in pain, he called for help for his Captain ahead of him-self. He was greatly respected for putting someone’s life ahead of his own. Harry Hopkins, Rob Hayes & Miss F Neave

and F&C Office and funded through Erasmus+.

Boston Grammar School had been selected in September to take part and was the only school from Lin-colnshire present. Together, with pupils from 28 other schools Mat-thew and Alexandra debated poli-cies regarding the Circular Econo-my and Single Digital Market. They were congratulated on their excel-lent job by the representatives of the Cypriot Embassy (Elizabeth Savvidou and Ioanna Hadjikyria-kou). They both agreed that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and worth all the work and time invest-ed as it helped them understand and experience nearly firsthand, how policies in Europe are decided upon!

Erasmus+ funded school project starts with a meeting in Germany Boston Grammar School has been awarded a grant from the EU Eras-mus+ programme to run a project in conjunction with schools from Germany and Finland. The project aims to teach pupils how to devel-op successful webinars on psychol-ogy and film analysis. The first part of the project was a pupil meeting in Saarbrücken, Ger-many in November 2015. Pupils set out to learn how to use Power-Point in a professional manner, spent time in the German partner school (Gymnasium am Ro-tenbühl), attended German classes and experienced first-hand, what it is like to live in Germany as they all stayed with host families. The six pupils from Boston Grammar School, who participated in this vis-it found the experience invaluable and improved their PowerPoint skills as well as their German im-mensely. The next workshop that forms part of this project is in Finland in Feb-ruary 2016. Pupils participating in this will be working on presenting and speaking (rhetoric).

Staff development abroad Four members of staff have bene-fited from EU funding to further their language and teaching skills. Mrs Turner spent a week in Finland where she shadowed the art de-partment at our partner school Par-gas Svenska Gymnasium. She was able to teach lessons herself and was given the opportunity to learn about web-based teaching and learning. Miss Boularand visited our partner school in Valencia, where she shadowed lessons and was able to improve her Spanish further. She too learnt a lot during this stay. Mrs Collinson will be attending a German language course in Ger-many, whilst Mr Poole is registered with the Goethe Institute. Both of them are working to improve their German prior to visiting our partner school in Saarbrücken, where they will be learning about bilingual teaching. Miss C Abrams

Winter Concert The music department started the Christmas celebrations by hosting our annual Winter Concert on Thursday 3 December. This year saw a jam packed concert with over 20 students showcasing their talents. We had a variety of perfor-mances of songs from The Beatles, The Pogues and Handel plus many

more. The students were fantastic and did the school and themselves proud. Ms Rich and Miss Bristow would like to say a massive thank you to all the students who partici-pated and to all the staff and Par-ent Teacher Association members who helped make the event a suc-cessful festive evening. Sport News The 1st XI have struggled in the Lincolnshire College league this season but they have shown good form of late and are hopeful of more success after Christmas. They have produced some very good sporadic performances de-feating Deeping School and Spal-ding GS but have struggled to maintain any consistency. The U16’s have struggled in all competitions this year despite be-ing the current county champions. They have suffered defeats in the Boston schools league have been knocked out of the county cup by Spalding and in the National Cup they lost to a very strong Carres Grammar School. They will need to regroup for the challenges that lie ahead as they enter the Sixth Form league next year. Ben Lawrence, Sam Anthony and Tapi Shahwe were all selected to represent Lincolnshire U16’s. This is an outstanding achievement. They lost to a very strong Northum-berland side in round 1 of their Na-tional Cup and have games against opposition from Nottinghamshire,

Derbyshire and Leicestershire to come. Tapi Shahwe has once again repre-sented Peterborough U16’s with distinction. The U15’s have proved to be one of the best teams in the school.

They are currently in the last 64 of

the ESFA National Cup having beaten Deeping School, Spring-wood High School, Arthur Mellows and Springwood School and Bourne Academy along the way. They are currently awaiting the win-ners of Carlton le Willows and Pri-ory LSST in Round 6 of this pres-tigious competition. They take a 100% record into the second half of the Boston League season and they are also in the county cup quarter final against Priory Ruskin, Grantham. The school is extremely pleased with the way the students have applied themselves this year. Taylor Gray, Seth Greeves, Sam Sharpe and Jenson Bark have all represented South Lincs Super-zone. Taylor and Seth have also represented Peterborough FC in their U15’s. The U14’s have excelled them-selves this season. They are cur-rently in the last 64 of the ESFA National Cup – an outstanding achievement. They have beaten Giles, Kings Lynn Academy, Branston Community College and Stanground. They face Kings Gran-tham in the next round of the Na-

The U13’s have enjoyed success and are unbeaten in the Boston schools league having drawn with Haven High and beaten Thomas Cowley. They will hope to maintain this form against Middlecott and William Lovell and play in a sudden death playoff against Haven High to enter the Superzone final. Jake Frestle has represented Lin-coln in their U13’s The U12’s have excelled this sea-son. They are currently in the last 64 in the country – an outstanding achievement for their first year at the school. They have beaten King Edward VI School, Carres GS, and Kings GS and they now play Arthur Mellows in Round 5. The only team to beat the Year 7 team this year was St Georges in the County Cup. They take a 100% record into the second half of the Boston League season and hope to represent the Superzone by winning this league.

Rugby The U14 rugby team have made an outstanding start to the Boston Schools league defeating Thomas Cowley and Middlecott in the first round of the new tournament for-mat. Greater challenges are to come as we face Haven High and William Lovell in the next round. The U16 team had an equally good start.

Physical Education Following on from the visit of GB Cycling last summer, our pupils have enjoyed visits from the Bos-ton Squash Club who run sessions in Year 8. They were very well re-ceived and all classes found the experience very rewarding. We hope to offer some more taster/experience days in the spring and summer term. Mr M Hodgkin
