aluminum trees certain-ly spoke of a previous era. The Stainless Metal Craft 6-foot-tal l Mid-century blue/green tree was labeled as a inchesSilver Pine inches on the original box panel. Although this was just the branches and no trunk, it gar-nered a healthy final bid of $375. The 4-foot-tall Evergleam silver tree, complete with box and stand, left with a high bid of $175. To go with the reflective trees, three color wheels were offered. The Imperial Christmas tree color wheel with original box drew the most interest, earning a final bid of $125.

The lot that drew the highest bid of the day was the 63-piece ster-ling silver flatware Gainsborough pattern by Alvin circa 1930 set complete with wooden box. This ample and hefty collection with a total weight exceeding 2500 grams was claimed with a high bid of $850. A very attractive group of vintage sterling silver tableware consisting of a monogrammed cream-er and sugar bowl, a 6-inch vase, candle-sticks, serving spoons, and napkin rings pre-sented an irresistible picture which drew a final bid of $300.

Staying with the metal offerings, a pair of ornate French brass five-light candelabras measuring approximate-ly 17 inches tall provid-ed an eye-catching lot that required a bid of $225 to take them home. A French gilt bronze fig-ural 26-inch tall lamp featured a peaceful youth playing a flute on a marble base. This unusual and appealing piece drew a final bid of

$175. Two chandeliers were also available. The approximately 26-inch long Mid-Century crys-tal chandelier from Spain was rehomed with a high bid of $175 and the French Rococo ornate chandelier con-sisting of cast brass with crystal prisms left for $150. Both needed some repair but were still ele-gant.

Speaking of crystal, the dazzling Waterford groups proved to be very popular. For example, the set of 11 Waterford Lismore crystal double Old Fashioned glasses measuring about 4.5 inches tall will provide years of enjoyment for the new owners with a final bid of $400. Ten 7-inches tall Waterford Lismore crystal cham-pagne flutes were car-ried off with a final bid of $325 and 11 Water-ford Lismore 7 inches crystal water goblets drew a $300 bid. The champagne and wine glasses drew similar bids, while a Waterford crystal 10 inches pedes-tal cake stand finished at $125. A lovely pair of Tiffany Hampton 8 inch-es crystal candlesticks closed at $125, and a very unusual Tiffany Frank Lloyd Wright crystal flower vase mea-suring 9.5 inches tall finished at $90.

The fragile treasures did not stop with crys-tal. An Art Nouveau Daum France Bacchus bud vase with Pate de Verre in violet and tur-quoise measured approx-imately 13 inches tall. It sold with its original box for a high bid of $325. The Fulper Vase featur-ing a Cucumber Crystal-line Glaze which stood 8 inches tall was claimed with a high bid of $150, while a graceful 6 inches tall modern Pewabic Pottery signed blue Bal-uster form vase ended at $100, and a colorful 24

inches tall Chinese por-celain umbrella stand or floor vase closed at $275. An adorable Mid-Centu-ry Italian Pottery carou-sel snack set consisted of six 6-inch tall horse-shaped snack bowls that were handmade and hand painted with their original black basket holder. This delightful set was claimed with a high bid of $150.

Two vintage Steiff tigers sold for $200 despite some wear. Two posable vintage Steiff Teddy Bears measuring about 11 inches tall left together for $90 and a 19 inch posable monkey cleared $35. There were a few other vintage toys offered, including one lot consisting of five antique dolls, some in ethnic clothing, that found a new home for a final bid of $225.

If looking for an unusual and eye-catch-ing gift, one serious can-didate would be this Hermès Tigre Royal Silk Scarf designed by Chris-tiane Vauzelles. It mea-sured approximately 35 by 35 inches and includ-ed the original box and brochure. The regal tiger was surrounded by gold palm fronds with a gold crown above. A final bid of $200 claimed this prize.

Finally, what better way to get in the mood for the holidays than with sleigh bells? There were a few groups of chromed steel bells, but the lot that really set the pace consisted of 40 antique brass sleigh bells on an 84 inch leather strap. The sound they made must have been marvelous as they were whisked away with a high bid of $350.

Hubley built toys that have lasted into a new centuryBy Doug Graves

    In the 20th century,

many a child might have asked for a Hubley toy to be placed under the Christmas tree.

Bank teller John Hubley of Lancaster, Pa., started making toy trains, but he soon sold off his train inventory and shifted his focus to cast-iron toys. In 1894 he launched the Hubley Manufacturing Co.

It wasn’t until 1909 that his cast-iron toys

hit store shelves, toys with themes that includ-ed horse-drawn vehicles, different breeds of dogs, tractors, steam shovels and toy pistols.

Some of the earliest Hubley toys (1910-1920) were mechanical banks, which were produced in large numbers through the 1930s. One of the most common is the “Trick Dog” bank. To an-imate this cast-iron con-traption, the user would place a coin in the dog’s mouth and then press

a lever behind the dog. That would cause the dog to jump through a hoop held by a clown before jerking to a stop over a red barrel, which would free the coin from the dog’s mouth before it fell into a barrel. Hubley’s other mechanical banks employed monkeys and elephants while his vin-tage still banks took the shapes of sailors, dogs and roosters.

Hubley’s colorful cata-logs assured that “Hub-ley toys were made to sell.” And sell they did. This enterprise was at one point among the largest makers of cast-iron toys in the world. For example, their 1933 catalog offered hundreds of choices from his many banks, to the Avery trac-tor, to the Lindy air-plane. All this despite the Great Depression.

Early Hubley toys were known for their complexity. For exam-ple, there was a delicate, 11-inch long Packard Straight 8, a five-ton truck that came complete with tools, a road roller that came in five differ-ent sizes, a steam shovel with working arms and shovels, and Chrysler Airflows with take-apart bodies. Hubley was es-pecially known for his many motorcycles, which were creative and of-ten included sidecars or hooked to delivery vans.

Hubley himself died in the early 1900s but the company continued

to produce a vast assort-ment of toy treasures. By the 1920s one of Hub-ley’s most appealing toy offerings was the horse-drawn wagons of the Toy Circus. Writing in The Story of American Toys author Richard O’Brien notes of the Toy Circus, “They were beautifully done, with much decora-tive detail, and included such esoterica as band-wagons, calliopes, mon-key trapeze, mirror van and more.”

A crowning achieve-ment by Hubley followed the crowning achieve-ment by Charles Lind-bergh in 1927. Lindber-gh shocked the world with his solo airplane flight from New York to Paris. Hubley had a cast iron version of Lind-berg’s Spirit of St. Louis the following year. The

copyrighted and clear-ly marked Lindy was a big hit for Hubley. Lat-er they included Lindy Lockheed-Sirius and the Lindy Glider in their winged lineup.

“One way of staying in business during the De-pression was to make ev-erything you could think of that might sell and then hold your breath,” wrote O’Brien.

From that time on Hubley produced a wide range of airplanes, often reproducing actual mil-itary aircraft with good attention to detail. Like the automobiles, Hubley aircraft were manufac-tured from multiple piec-es which were usually put together with solid rivets. They had moving wheels and guns, and

sometimes retractable landing gear. The wheels were often made of rub-ber.

As 1940 rolled around the Hubley firm had emerged from its hum-ble beginnings to become a world leader in toy manufacturing. During this time the firm began shifting from cast iron to die-cast zinc.

Like most other Amer-ican toy makers, Hubley switch to military de-vices during World War II. Full toy production resumed in 1946. Ear-ly in the 1950s, Hubley underwent still another material transition — this time from zinc metal to mostly plastic. Again, some toys were made with parts of both mate-rials.

Earlier Hubley toys, like this 1920 cast-iron Mod-el T Ford sedan sold for

$290 recently. This piece utilized iron tires.

Their dandy Frontier Rifle had a metal bar-rel and magazine but a plastic stock. In 1952 it retailed for $3.98. The early 1950s version of the Hubley hook and lad-der truck had a metal chassis but a plastic cab and trailer. The Bell tele-phone truck was nearly all metal with aluminum trim, but the Motor Ex-press Truck was nearly all plastic except for met-al springs and axels.

A big seller for Hubley starting in the 1950s and continuing well into the next decade was their. Basically crafted of die-cast metal with sliding plastic canopy and re-tractable landing gear, they packaged in bright-ly colored boxes. Each was clearly marked, “A Hubley Metal Toy.”

From 1959 to 1962, Hubley began making plastic models of 1:24 scale. Collectors will re-call a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, a Mercedes-Benz 180 roadster, a Triumph TR-3 and a Renault Dau-phine. The Renault fea-tured a realistic sliding moon roof.

Around 1960, a change occurred as Hubley be-came known for its de-tailed metal car kits, which were unique in a market of dominantly plastic offerings. Hub-

ley even set up its Scale Model Division for these products. These metal kits, issued in various scales, were more expen-sive than plastic models and were naturally quite heavy. Complexity in de-tail was often seen, with opening hoods, doors, moving panels, and de-tailed engines and chas-sis. Completing a Hubley model required a bit more dedication from the mod-eler as metal parts some-times had to be filed and sanded in preparation for painting, and it was rec-ommended screw holes all to be pre-tapped.

In the late 1960s, Hub-ley offered pre-assembled Real Toys (called Real Types in Canada). These cars were 1:50 scale and measured about three inches long. Real Toys generally had no interi-ors, but detail and body proportions were spot-on. Wheels were simple met-al discs with axle hubs sticking through. A Hub-ley toy line during the 1960s was “Kiddie Toys”. One of the more popu-lar of these looked like a P-47 Republic Thun-derbolt, but with upward folding wings like an F4U Corsair. This plane came in a variety of bright col-ors, another trademark of Hubley toys.

Hubley was also a pi-oneer in the relatively widespread incorpora-tion of name brands. In

many cases the compa-ny obtained exclusive rights to reproduce the brands thus giving them an added emphasis in the marketplace. Brands ap-pearing on Hubley toys include Borden’s Milk, Bell Telephone, Old Dutch Cleanser, May-tag washer, G.E. refrig-erator, Ingersoll-Rand Compressor, Harley-Da-vidson motorcycle, Eagle ranges, and U.S. Mail.

The nimble firm also ventured into the com-ic strip world of Popeye too. The Popeye Spinach Patrol featured the sailor on a cast iron motorcycle. Additionally, there was a full range of so-called midget line Hubley vehi-cles. From boat to zeppe-lin they were similar to the full-sized models but about four to five inches in length.

    Perhaps Hubley’s di-

versification in the 1960s overtaxed its profits, weakening it financial-ly by the 1970s. Hubley was acquired by Gabriel Industries, which later sold many dies to Ertl and Scale Models, both of Dyersville, Iowa.

Above: From the mid-1930s is this Chrysler airflow de-sign cast-iron car with some styling and detailing. This toy had numerous parts (including 5 screws to hold it together) making it a financial mistake for the com-pany. Few of these seven-inch cars survived. (photo submitted)

    HubleyFrom Page 7

Above: Paint on Hubley toys oftentimes chipped, but the toy itself was very durable and lasted a lifetime. This horse and jockey stook 5” wide, 5” tall, and sold for $125. (photo submitted)

Below: In 1928, Hubley produced this four-engine air-plane with a 5.5-inch wingspan. Appealing to youth as the wheels and propellers move freely. Value set at $85. (photo submitted)

tion allowed for the mass production of chocolate. By 1730, chocolate had dropped in price and was no longer considered a food for kings only. And the American colonies produced more chocolate than anywhere else in the world, resulting in the world’s first chocolate fac-tory, established in New England, in 1765.

In 1847, an English company introduced solid “eating chocolate” through the invention of fondant chocolate, a smooth, velvety-tasting variety that completely replaced the older, coars-er grained chocolate. And in 1876, Daniel Peter of Switzerland added milk to his chocolate, creating milk chocolate.

Following the discov-ery of milk chocolate, chocolate molds were invented. Historians mark 1880 as the year of discovery, and the period of 1880 – 1910 is consid-ered the classic era in chocolate making.

During this 30-year period, confectioners reproduced objects from life as realistically as possible. Intense detail and artistry reigned as mold designs reflected the social history of the times. Designs mirroring social changes and fads and fashion trends can be clearly seen in the chocolate molds.

During the “golden age” of chocolate molds, the main body and move-able parts of a chocolate piece were sculpted and molded in minute detail like miniature sculp-tures. Metal, paper and wooden accessories often

complemented the choco-late pieces. Often toys, bicycles, musical instru-ments and more were used to adorn chocolate, and some chocolates came with companion pieces, such as nativity scenes.

Between 1910 and 1930, molds reflected the smooth, rounded outlines of the Art Deco period. Rather than detailed reproductions of life, molds now featured fan-tasy characters, such as Santa Claus. Manufac-turers perfected the rota-ry machine, used for hol-low molding, during this time. Now chocolate molds were designed so that the chocolate clung only to the inside of the piece instead of making a solid piece.

Comical characters, especially Walt Disney characters, appeared between 1930 and 1950 as molds became flatter and less ornate. Rather than curved or sculpted 3-D shapes, molds of this era used etched lines to simplify the details.

The end of World War II also saw the end of many small chocolate makers and confection-ers. Large corporations began making choco-lates, using plastic molds. Today, plastic molds of older, metal mold designs are the cur-rent fad in chocolate making.

Santa chocolate molds reached their heyday in the 1930s and ‘40s. Older Santa molds probably existed during the “gold-en age,” but the molds were relatively thin and wore out with use, so most of the earliest choc-olate molds are lost.

As the Coca Cola Santa stormed America,

Santa molds became more and more available. Today, collectors seek Santa chocolate molds. Some of the Santa molds are signed or numbered, but many are not. Names to look for include Kutzscher, Heris, Reiche, and Letang. Ger-man-made molds are usually the most sought and, therefore, the most expensive, with single molds running $300 or more.

Collectors, especially those who still use the molds to cast chocolate pieces, like to collect flat chocolate molds of Santa. Many have 10 or 12 Santa Clauses per sheet, so pouring multiple choc-olate pieces is easier and quicker. Expect a quality flat mold to cost $125 or more.

The prized Santa choc-olate molds are the two-sided molds with clamps. Some of these are over 8 inches in height, making spectacu-lar collections.

Beeswax Christmas ornaments are cast in chocolate molds too. This practice started when chocolate makers poured beeswax into their molds so that examples of their chocolates could sit in their shops’ windows. Direct sun through the window would melt choc-olates, but beeswax melts at 148 degrees, and bees-wax is nearly chocolate brown in color, so imita-tion chocolate pieces, made of beeswax, could be displayed in the win-dows without fear of melting. This helped improve profits greatly.

If you have never made your own chocolate pieces, maybe it is time you invested in a choco-late mold. A simple flat

one would allow you and your children or grand-children to make warm memories along with sweet chocolaty Santa pieces. The mold you buy to make chocolate Santas for your own family will easily be the most valu-able chocolate Santa mold you will ever own.

Above: Lovely Antique Flat sheet of 10 Santa Clauses chocolate molds with Christmas tree and a present in a package. These molds are valued at $150.
