Fuengirola feria is the big party of the year for the residents of

Fuengirola, and a superb party to attend for all ages.

The Feria (fair) takes place each year from the 6th to the 12th of October.

At the front of the fairground is a large fun fair with rides for all ages.

At the back of the fairground are the casitas (bars) where much live music,

flamenco dancing and drinking takes place.

All around the Feria food is being cooked and served.

During the daytime the locals ride their immaculately turned out horses,

and bring in their stunning carriages horses and carriages into the

fairground.

All of the locals are turned out immaculately in the traditional dress -

flamenco dresses for the women and smart traditional suits for the men.

One big fantastic, family friendly week long party!

HALLOWEEN

Halloween is one of the world’s oldest holidays, dating back to pagan times. It is celebrated today

by more people in more countries than ever before. Every country in the world has its own concept

of Halloween traditions.

Halloween is believed to have originated in the British Isles out of the Pagan Celtic celebration of

Samhain. It was believed that spirits rose from the dead and mingled with the living on this day.

The Celts left food at their doors to encourage good spirits and they wore mask to scare off bad ones.

Many centuries later the Roman Catholic church tried to do away with pagan holidays and so established

November 1st as All Saints Day. But this attempt to detract from the Pagan celebration didn’t work and

the celebrations on the eve of All Saints Day continued to grow and change. During the Irish immigration

into America in the 1840’s, Halloween found its way to the United States.

The modern name Halloween comes from the abbreviated form of All Hallows

Evening the eve of All Saints Day.

Trick or Treating

In the Celtic times and up until the medieval ages, fairies were thought to run free on October 31st.

The fairies weren’t evil but they weren’t particularly good. They were mischievous. They liked

rewarding good deeds and did not like to be crossed. The fairies were thought to disguise themselves

as beggars and go door to door asking for handouts. Those who gave them food were rewarded and

those who did not were subjected to some unpleasantness.

In medieval times children would go door-to-door begging for cakes, much like the modern trick or

treaters. For every cake a child collected, he or she would have to say a prayer for the dead relatives

of the person who gave them the cake.

Page 21: ACROSS SPAIN HALLOWEEN MAGAZINE

Jack-O-Lanterns

As part of the Samhain celebration, Celts would bring home an ember from the communal bonfire

at the end of the night. They carried these embers in hollowed-out turnips, creating a lantern

resembling the modern day jack-o'-lantern. This carried on in Ireland and Scotland through the

18th century. Traditional jack-o'-lanterns, hollowed-out turnips with embers or candles inside,

became a very popular Halloween decoration in Ireland and Scotland a few hundred years ago.

Tradition held that they would ward off evil spirits on Halloween. Americans replaced the turnips

with pumpkins which were more plentiful and easier to carve. People began to cut frightening faces

and other elaborate designs into their jack-o'-lanterns.

Today Halloween is celebrated like a masquerade with people wearing every disguise imaginable.

Many people decorate their homes and gardens and hand out sweets to trick or treaters.

Despite its origins, today Halloween is less to do with evil, devil worship or satanic forces – its just

good clean fun!

The Bran Castle, Transylvania, Romania Located deep within the Carpathian Mountains, the castle over 1,000 years old is best known

for being Dracula’s Castle in the 1400s. Vlad III Dracula is probably one of the most infamous

images of cruelty, due to his preferred method of torture, the impalement. But the cruelty doesn’t

end here. Dracula preferred even more gruesome tortures, including hammering nails into the thief’s

head, hacking off limbs, blinding, and strangulation, burning or boiled alive, scalping or skinning alive.

The castle is filled with instruments from the time of Vlad, being a museum for over 40 years now.

Windsor Castle, London, England Home of the present Queen of England, the Windsor castle is over 900 years old, rumoured to host

several ghosts from England’s past. King Henry VIII has been seen walking the hallways of the castle.

Many guests said they heard footsteps, agonizing moans on several occasions coming from the castle’s

corridors. Some people said they even saw Queen Elizabeth I in the Royal Library, in a black gown

walking about. The first Duke of Buckingham, Sir George Villiers, is known to haunt one of the castle’s

bedrooms, while the Long Walk is filled with wondering spirits.

Dragsholm Slot, Sealand, Denmark Build in the 12th century, the Dragsholm castle that was home to kinds and noble families has

now been converted into a hotel, home to three ghosts: a grey lady, a white one and the ghost of

the Earl of Bothwell. The grey lady is said to be a maiden that worked in the castle, while the white

lady is the daughter of one of the owners of the castle. Her father caught her in love with a common

man and imprisoned her in the castle’s dungeons. In 1930, while building new toilets for the castles,

the workers found a skeleton with a white dress imprisoned in the wall. Some areas of the hotel were

analyzed by American parapsychologists and found extreme amounts of electricity and radio activity.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland Located on a volcano that turned into a rock, the castle is the center of Scottish history for over 800

years now. After a terrifying plague, officials decided to build the new city over the remains of the

old one. The Underground city was discovered in 1990 perfectly preserved while some people were

renovating a home. There have been stories of people grabbed by icy hands, shows of light of

unknown origin or voices heard throughout the grounds.

Ballygally Castle, Ireland Built in 1625, the Ballygally Castle has now been turned to a hotel, occasionally haunted by Lady

Shaw, a former lady of the Castle. She is said to love knocking at the doors of various hotel rooms

and finds it amusing when she finds no one there. Ballygally is located near the Giant’s Causeway,

offering superb views of the Antrim Mountains and the Irish Sea. You can also try renting a fishing

boat for deep sea fishing or catching a trout near the river.

TRADITIONAL TOFFEE APPLES

Halloween is just around the corner, so why not make traditional toffee apples for your

party? This recipe makes enough toffee for 6 apples - double up if you're making more.

They can be made a couple of days in advance, but be sure to wrap them in cellophane.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

Wooden skewers - one for each apple

Food thermometer

Non-stick baking parchment

INGREDIENTS

225g demerera sugar

110ml water

Half tsp vinegar

2tbsp golden syrup

25g butter

6 apples, stalks removed

METHOD

1. Place the water and sugar in a pan on a medium heat. When the sugar has dissolved en-

tirely in the water, add the vinegar, syrup and butter.

2. Stirring constantly, boil the mixture for approximately 10 minutes until it reaches 140C,

testing with the food thermometer.

3. While the toffee is boiling, pierce each apple with its wooden stick at the stalk end and

line a flat baking tray with non-stick parchment.

4. Dip each apple into the hot toffee and turn in the pan until fully coated, then place on the

baking tray to cool.

Richard Alexander has worked in financial services for 36 years and provides specialist

financial planning services to expat and UK clients with accumulated capital who

prefer the personal touch of a dedicated and trusted financial adviser.

Richard aims to build long term client relationships by understanding their

aspirations, to appreciate their concerns, sensitivities and risk tolerances and to

provide a bespoke solution designed to achieve their goals.

At the core of financial planning is recognition of the main objectives, which can often

be expressed as a need for growth or income. Even when the objective is simply wealth

preservation, a focus on growth will be needed to offset the effects of inflation.

For people moving or retiring abroad, currency risk is a further consideration. Pension

income may arise in the currency of the country of origin and fluctuations in exchange

rates will affect the level of income. However, some private pensions can be transferred

into a new plan held in the appropriate currency which will remove future currency

risk.

Inheritance Tax may be a major consideration; Inheritance Tax in the UK is calculated

by reference to the Estate of the deceased person whereas in Spain, it is calculated by

reference to the beneficiaries, with the rates of tax varying, depending on who the

beneficiaries are and their relationship to the deceased. Tax may also be due in both

countries but there is a dual tax treaty which should ensure that double taxation can

normally be avoided.

Earlier UK planning may have involved the use of Trusts in the UK or offshore. If this

is the case, you need to be aware that Spain does not recognise the status of Trusts and

if you are the Settlor of a Trust who has become Spanish tax resident, the local tax

authorities are likely to ignore the Trust and treat the assets and income or gains

arising as your personal income or gains and seek to tax you accordingly.

Clients of RAFP benefit from our relationship with local tax specialists in each country

and can be confident that their investments will be appropriate to their individual tax

position and future plans.
