Business Objects Universes A Business Object Universe identifies information available in the Allcorp Data Warehouse (ADW) for a particular business area. This is the source of the metadata seen for a universe in the Business Objects query tool. Universes are comprised of Classes which are comprised of Objects.

Business Plan A business plan explains the nature of a business as well as its goals. It is a detailed plan for the future actions of the company. It is also the document that is presented to lenders in order to borrow funds.

Business Risk Risk that is inherent in a business, such as a decline in sales because there is intense competition. It is evidenced by variability of earnings. Business risk plus financial risk equals total risk.

Business Rules A Business Rule is a statement that defines or constrains some aspect of the business. From the business perspective, it pertains to any of the constraints that apply to the behavior of people in the enterprise. In information systems, business rules are recorded as data and constraints on changes to the values of those facts. That is, what data may, or may not, be recorded in the information system.

Business Rules Viewer The Business Rules Viewer is used to search, view and print Business Rules.Business Value History History of changes to codes and values in the Codes Management System.Business Values Business Values in the Codes Management System are sets of valid entries for a Coded Domain. Values may

be associated to codes. For instance, the value "Illinois" could be represented by the code "IL"

Calendar Year All activity that occurs between January 1 and December 31. The basis used to measure production and expense results.

Capital The accumulated, permanent resources a company gets from owners and customers. The value of the portion of assets that a company owns and that are not restricted by obligations to creditors.

Capital Structure The composition of a business's funding structure ratio.Capitalized Generally, a piece of equipment having a value of $250 or more assigned a property number, put into

accounting books and depreciated over time.Carry-over The process by which the ending cash balance of one month becomes the beginning balance of the following

month. "Carry-over" also means the use of losses or tax credits from one period to reduce taxes in another period.

Case Incurred The sum total of all claim payments plus case reserves.Case Reserve The dollar reserve established by a claim representative (or Home Office on large referred claims) estimating

what the claim will ultimately cost when settled. Also known as field reserve.Cash Flow A measure of money taken versus the money paid out on a periodic basis, usually monthly.Cash Flow Projection The end result (usually a spreadsheet) of predicting the future inflow and outflow of cash to the cash balance

CMS End Date The date when this Domain information will no longer be valid.CMS Staging A Repository Area containing Coded Domains and Rules that are new or are being modified in the Codes

Management System. To modify a Domain, the Domain is copied from Production into CMS Staging, modified and then moved into Production with its related items, replacing the previous version. AKA in CMS as "in Edit."

CMS Start Date The effective date when this Domain information will be or became valid. If the effective date is unknown for the Domain, this is the date this information was entered into CMS. When codes and values are changed the codes being replaced would receive an "end date" and the new codes would have an "effective date."

CNS File Share The CNS File Share displays a list of documents related to the Common Name Space strategy.Code Collections Various areas of Allstate use different codes to mean the same thing. For example one area may use F =

Female and M = Male while another area uses 01 = Female and 02 = Male. Each set of these codes is called a collection.

Code Matrix Grid A table of all the Business Values for a Domain, associated codes and the collections that use that code.

Coded Domain A Coded Domain is a Domain that has codes and values. Coded Domains are managed by the Codes Management System. See also Domain.

Coded Domain Reports Previously called "CMS Viewer Reports", these are reports on information in the Codes Management System, including Domains, Codes and Values and which Fields contain specific Code Collections. The Allstate Acronym List is one of these reports.

Codes Codes are numbers or words used to represent the values for a Domain. Sets of codes and associated values are considered valid for Coded Domains. For instance, the code "IL" could represent Illinois. A set of codes and associated values is considered a Collection.

Acronym Term DefinitionCodes & Values Wizard The Codes & Values Wizard finds codes and values based on business names. Business Names include

Domains, Domain Synonyms, Attributes and Preferred Field Names. The search of business names can be limited by Application. This is sometimes a more effective way to find codes and values than using Advanced Search or drilling down through the lists.

Codified Domains A domain (field) that has codes and their value definitions associated with it. All fields (attributes) have a domain assigned to them. A domain can be equal to a field or can aggregate fields at a higher level such as the case of State Name which aggregates Garaging State, U. S. State, Risk State, Licensing State, etc. to State Name so that all these fields are using the same codes.

Codified Domains in UCT Collections (sets of codes) are loaded into the UCT (Universal Code Translation) tables and can be used either to provide code/decode (02 = Male), or translations between collections (02 = M = Male).

Coding Manual The Coding Manual is the MAX Coding Manual used by Pricing, MAX and the field to verify MAX Coding.

Collateral A claim on some asset of the borrower to secure a loan and reduce the risk of the lender. If the borrower defaults, the assets can be sold to reduce the lender's loss.

Collection A collection is a set of Codes or Business Values. A Domain may have several collections, each identifying valid values for a field. Collections are identified by a collection number and name.

Collection Data Type The data type for the codes entered for that collection, such as Char, Numeric, etc. If the collection contains Values only (no codes), the type is left blank.

Collection Type Collection Type refers to the source or type of data within the collection. For example, if the data has special characters or blanks, this information is helpful to developers who will be using the data. Values may be External (External Source), Object Identifier (CANVAS OID), Special Character, Standard, Standard with Blank, Undetermined or Value Only (no codes).

Column Columns are also called Fields or Data Elements, which are more general terms for a data item. A column name identifies the data stored in that column.

Combined Ratio The sum of the loss ratio and expense ratio. It is the percent of earned premium, which is used to pay all incurred losses and expenses.

Commercial Premium Credit Annualized premium of issued Commercial policies up to an established maximum per policy.Commission Remuneration, such as a percentage of money that is paid to an independent contractor, for a given activity,

such as sales.Common Collection Collection used in Universal Code Translation tables to translate from one set of codes to another. The

common collection integrates all business values for a domain, associating a meaningless, sequential code with each unique business value.

Common Stock Common stock represents ownership of a corporation. The common stockholder is the residual claimant, i.e., the last one to receive assets if the firm is liquidated. The common stockholder, however, can benefit from growth through appreciation of share and increased cash dividends.

Comparison Summary The result of the EA Conversion Analysis Exercise, this report will show NOA compensation, production allowance, and OEA minus expenses, which should equal net revenue. The same is true for EAs, commission less expenses equal net revenue. This will be projected for both year one and year ten. Keep in mind that these projections are based on today's dollars.

Condition Object Type A Condition object is used to limit or define the values of another data field. Examples include, "year to date" or "current month". This is one of the types of objects in a Business View. See Object type.

Acronym Term DefinitionCorporate Expense Allocation General Corporate, Home Office (P&C); Data Center, Output Processing Center and Shared Markets

expenses allocated to a Region in proportion to the amount of support provided the Region. Usually driven by PIF or earned premium.

Cost Centers A new term with SAP. An area of responsibility or location that generates costs. Cost Centers are similar to our current Company/Office/Department/Function codes.

Cost Elements A new term with SAP. These are similar to our current ledger/subledger combinations. It is the ability to categorize costs.

Cost Objectives A new term with SAP. The location where both direct and indirect costs are recorded. Currently, this is being done through departments. In SAP, these are three different types of cost objects: Cost Center, Internal Order and Work Breakdown Structure.

Cost of Capital The interest rate, inferred cost of retained earnings, inferred cost of issuance of new shares, or blended average of interest and equity capital costs that a firm experience in acquiring funds. It is the discount rate that should be used in the capital budgeting process, but no universally applicable mechanism for calculating it exists.

DA Viewer The Data Administration Viewer is used to generate customized reports on Logical Data Models, Business Access Models and their associated objects.

DAMA International An organizationData Access Type Data Access Type is the type of Data Store used to store the data. It could be a database management

system or file storage system. Some Data Access Types are DB2, Oracle, VSAM.Data Cleansing Data cleansing improves the quality of business data by eliminating redundant and anomalous entries and

applying standard formats.Data Column Object Type A Data Column object type is an object that has its data stored in a column in the database, as opposed to a

different type of object, such as Derived or Condition or Metric. See Object Type.Data Element Data elements is a general term for data, also referred to as Fields or Columns. This is the data stored in a

database or file system.Data Mart In the Data Management industry, Data Marts are subsets of a Data Warehouse, containing data for a specific

function. At Allstate, the term Data Mart was used with the now defunct Enterprise Data Warehouse. When the EDW Data Warehouse was replaced by the Allcorp Data Warehouse, the term was changed to Business Objects Universes, because the tool used to access the data warehouse changed from Brio to Business Objects. The metadata you see in the MetaData Viewer is the source for the names and definitions used in the query tools.

Data Profiling Data Profiling refers to the process of obtaining information on the contents of data stored in a database. for instance, it will identify if a particular column has data, the percentage that contain data or are null, if there are codes, the percent that each code is used. In the repository, Data Profiling contains documents that identify this information. This information is then also displayed on the Column Detail pages in the Allstate Data Guide.

Data Stores Data Stores are groups of Files, also known as databases, instances or file groups.Data Type The type of data that may be stored in that column as defined by the data base management system, such as

Number, Char, VARCHAR2, etc.Database Name Name of a specific instance of a database.DB2 Database Name Name of a specific instance of a DB2 database.DB2Home Identifies the DB2 connection used to access the DB2 database.DBMS Occurrence Name Name of a specific instance of an Oracle database.Debt Ratio Total debt divided by total assets. Acronym Term DefinitionDeductibles A dollar amount a policyholder chooses to self-insure by agreeing to pay this out-of-pocket cost when a loss

occurs.Default Failure to meet obligations of an agreement.Definition A Definition is provided for every metadata item where possible on the List and Detail pages. Definitions are

from various sources, depending on the metadata and may be combinations of definitions from various sources.

Depreciation A decrease in the value of property over a period of time due to wear and tear of obsolescence. Depreciation is used to help determine the actual cash value of property at time of loss.

Derived Data Derived data is calculated "on the fly" by summing data, multiplying data, or performing a complex calculation. This is one of the types of an Object. See Object Type.

Direct Expenses Expense Charges which are not allocated to another Allstate Company due to their unique relationship to the Company incurring them.

Disposition Ratio The relationship of claims settled (dispose of) to total reported claims used to measure the expediency with which claims are being settled.

Dividends Distributed assets from corporate earnings to corporate owners. Dividends may be in the form of cash, stock, or tangible property. Cash dividends are declared by the directors of a corporation. Cash dividends are the only returns that most investors receive until they sell their stock.

Domain Domains are business names for data. Domains are linked to Fields, Attributes, Collections, Business Values and Rules. Coded Domains have a specific set of valid values. Non-coded Domains do not have specific values or codes.

Domain Synonym A Domain Synonym may exist for a Domain when the Domain is referenced by a different name. This enables finding domains when they are known by other names.

Domain Type Domain Type identifies whether the Domain is Coded (has codes and values) or Non-Coded (no specific code sets required).

Earned Exposures The number of coverage (auto) or policies (property) we have insured per our contract. They are measured on a car year or house year basis.

Earned Premium The amount of net premium written (net of reinsurance) that becomes earned as the policy period develops and the insurance protection is provided.

Edm Admin Tools The Edm Admin tools (Enterprise Data Management Administration tools) are used to maintain users, groups and tools and perform other system maintenance tasks related to metadata tools. It also allows viewing a log of Events (for example, when a data model or a file group was loaded into the repository) and sending emails to user groups.

Effective Month The month (and day) in which policy is issued.Efficiency A standard used to measure the effectiveness of manpower. (i.e., Employees/PIF)Endorsement A change made to an existing policy which may result in a change in premium based on a change in a

coverage provided or an applicable rating factor. It could be a change in coverage or the addition and/or deletion of a car on an automobile policy.

Entity Entities are business names that identify a person, place, thing, concept, or event that Allstate needs for business. Logical Data Models contain Entities which contain Attributes. By linking Entities to File names, we can find files without having to know their technical database names.

Entity Keys One or more attributes in an entity that are used to identify the contents within the entity. A Primary Key, for instance, uniquely distinguishes one instance of that entity from all other instances that may exist for that entity. A Foreign Key is a Key in a different entity, included in this entity to identify an association.

Acronym Term DefinitionEntity Synonym Entity Synonym is a different name for an Entity than the standard, or original, name. This enables finding the

entities when they are known by other names.Equity The value of a business beyond any mortgage or liability.Equity Capital The owner's claims to funds invested in the business.Equity Financing Money loaned to a business owner that the owner does not have to repay on a scheduled basis.Expense Allocations Expenses are allocated to each department on a user pay basis. Expense Ratio The percentage of earned premium used to pay expenses. It is used to monitor expense levels.Exposures Same as C.I.F. (Coverage In Force). The number of exposures generated by the prior month PIF (EOM). For

property, it is equal to PIF (BOM). For auto, it is equal to the number of cars carrying a specific coverage at the beginning of the month.

External Collection Collection has codes and values from an external source and Allstate has no control over the data.External Models External Models are created external to Allstate and are stored only in the External Models area in the

repository. These models do not contain domain or code information, are not integrated with other repository objects and are not located in the Production area. See Model Type.

External Source A Coded Domain may be from an external source, such as a company outside Allstate.Facility Direct Under a Reinsurance Facility, business directly written by a carrier and then ceded (premium and losses) to

the Facility with no resulting impact on the Region's P&L.Facility Transfer Under a Reinsurance Facility, each carrier received a pro-rata portion (transfer) of the Facility results, which

are the sum of the Facility Direct business. The transfer impacts the Region's P&L.Fast Track An analysis of state loss results between Allstate and the industry, which permits a comparison of Allstate's

changing pure premium levels (by coverage of PPA and by line for Owners).Federal Identification Number A business number obtained from the Internal Revenue Service that identifies the business of federal tax

returns and documents.Field Reserve Same as Case Reserve. The dollar reserve established by a claim representative (or Home Office on large

referred claims) estimating what the claim will ultimately cost when settled. Also known as field reserve.

Fields Fields are the data stored in a database or file system. In relational systems, fields are referred to as columns.

File Context Identifies physical reference data at a level higher than File (Table) and Field (Column). When physical references have the same File (Table) and Field (Column) names for the same Domain in CMS, File Context provides a unique identifier allowing the physical reference to be associated to different code sets.

Files Files are groups of Fields, also known as tables, VSAM or flat files.Filters Criteria used to identify metadata items.Financial Responsibility Law A state law which may require motorists to furnish evidence, either before or after involvement in an auto

accident (depending on the individual state's law), of ability to pay for damages up to certain minimum dollar limits. These requirements commonly are met by carrying auto liability insurance with specified minimum limits or more.

Financial Risk The risk that a firm might not be able to meet its financial obligations.Fixed Costs Costs that remain fairly constant month to month, and are unrelated to production costs.

Acronym Term DefinitionFlat File A file that has no structured interrelationship between its data records. Data records are strings of data;

typically without delimiters in the data itself. Copybook layouts provide the structure to determine what data fields are represented in which positions in the data string.

Frequency See Gross, Net or Paid Frequency. The number of claims per 100 coverage in force.Full Name If a name had to be shortened for some technical reason, this displays the complete, unabridged name.

General Corporate Expense Allocation The process by which the expenses for Corporate Head Office, whose activities affect all business units, are allocated to each of the business units/Regional Offices using earned premium.

Glossary See Acronyms and Terms.Grid A Grid displays information in a table format with rows and columns. In the MetaData Viewer, some of the

information are links to Detail pages or additional grids.Gross Expense The sum of all company allocations of a particular expense ledger or item.Gross Frequency The number of annualized claims reported per 100 coverage in force. It is used to monitor the quality of the

book of business.Gross Paid Severity Gross loss payments divided by CWAs. The formula is: (Gross Loss Payments + Allocated Expenses) / CWA

Gross Written Premium The total premium derived from all policies issued and taken. For 6 month polices, the adjusted premium for add cars is also included.

Hex A data type identifying the type of data as Hexadecimal which refers to the base-16 number system, which consists of 16 unique symbols: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F.

Home Office Reserves Reserve dollars established by the Home Office Claim Reserve Department in addition to case reserves. The reserves are used to insure enough money is put aside to cover additional liabilities unknown to the adjuster or best estimated on a broader scale. This helps reduce the impact of case distortion and stabilizes the overall claim liability.

Home Page The page that initially opens when you open the MetaData Viewer. The default Home Page contains general information about the MetaData Viewer. You may select Business Home or the MetaData List as your default Home Page in place of the original default Home Page.

House Years See C.I.F. The number of exposures generated by the prior month PIF (EOM). For property, it is equal to PIF (BOM). For auto, it is equal to the number of cars carrying a specific coverage at the beginning of the month.

Hurdle Rates Minimum rates of return that investors wish to receive before they will make certain investments. Hurdle rates are set by comparing investments to alternate investment opportunities.

Incurred Losses The total of all claim payments (losses and expenses), subrogation, salvage, plus the change in reserves (case and Home Office) during a stated period of time. The change in IBNR may also be included.

Incurred Severity The total incurred loss dollars per claim reported.Informational Tax Returns (Federal income taxes) - Information required under the Internal Revenue Code and regulations to be

furnished by persons who pay income to others. The principal types relate to payments of $600 or more for services rendered, if such payments are not shown on Form W-2 and payment to non-corporate recipients of business rents and royalties of $600 or more. Informative returns must also be filed by partnerships, estates, and trust including details of revenues and expenses, and distributable shares of net income, if any.

Integer A data type identifying the type of data is a whole number. A positive or negative number with no fractional part; a fixed-point number in which the part after the decimal is zero. (www.techdictionary.com)

Also known as the M90.J-58 An Allstate form that is sued to initiate and acquire approvals to seek a new employee.Journal Voucher Used to move (transfer) expenses from one office/department to another office/department.JUA Direct Under a Joint Underwriting Association (JUA), that business directly written by a Servicing Carrier and then

ceded along with its loss experience to the industry JUA with no resulting impact on the Region's P&L.

JUA Transfer Under a Joint Underwriting Association, each insurance company receives a pro-rata portion of the Industry JUA results (written and earned premium plus losses and expenses). The JUA Transfer impacts the Region's P&L.

Key One or more columns in a table used to identify the contents within the table. A Primary Key, for instance, distinguishes one row of data in that table as unique within the table,

Keyword Keywords are one or more words used in searches or filters to identify Domains or Rules that have been associated to the keyword. At this point, Keywords are only applicable to Coded Domains and Rules and are managed by Codes Analysts.

Keyword Short Definition The full name for the Keyword or brief definition, often used to provide the full name for abbreviations or acronyms used in the keywords.

Keyword Type Keyword Type defaults to CMS. At this point, Keywords are only applicable to Coded Domains and Rules and are managed by Codes Analysts. In the future, Keyword Type may be used to distinguish CMS usage from Keyword associations to other metadata.

LDM Reports These are reports on the contents of the Logical Data Models, that identify, for instance, each business data element (attribute), its definition and the name of the column where this data is stored.

LDM Wizard The Logical Data Model Wizard provides search capabilities by Logical Data Model or Business Access Model. The search is against the names of Domains, Entities, and Attributes.

Ledger All expense items are categorized into similar groupings to facilitate control planning. This categorization is achieved via a system of two digit codes.

Length The allowed length of data that may be stored in a column or field.Liability A recognized claim against or amount owed by a business or individual. The legal responsibility to repay debt.

Limited Liability A person has limited liability if he/she is only responsible for paying the portion of debts or the business that are proportionate to the person's investment in the business.

Limited Partner A person who invests money in a business (a limited partnership).

Acronym Term DefinitionLogical Data Model Attributes Attributes are the business names that identify information the business needs for an Entity. Attributes have

Marginal Tax Rate Tax on additional dollar of taxable income. Contrast to average tax rate (income tax expense divided by income before deducting income taxes) and statutory tax rate (the rate specified into he income tax law for each type of income or capital gain).

Market Growth The expansion of the total number of potential policyholders in a market.Market Segmentation The process of selecting from a population of mixed characteristics a group, or groups, having similar

characteristics representative of a desired market.Market Share That portion of a market's policyholders who are insured with the same company; a company's percentage

share of the total premium available in a market.Marketing Plan Part of the business plan that analyzes and sets goals for each line of insurance.Master Data Information required to create and maintain an enterprise-wide "system of record" for core business entities, in

order to capture business transactions and measure results for these entities. Master data spans all organizational business functions.

Merit Rating The application of premium surcharges for chargeable accidents and/or traffic violations.Metadata Bridge The Metadata Bridge tools are used to maintain file group metadata. The tool provides a means of versioning

and managing Business Views, publishing Business Views in the MetaData Viewer and creating metadata for Business Objects.

Metadata Items Metadata Items is a general term used when there are multiple metadata types. For instance, a Metadata Item could be a Data Store, Column, Class, Logical Data Model, etc.

MetaData List The MetaData List lists the types of metadata available in the MetaData Viewer. It is a high level starting point for browsing the viewer. The list includes the types of metadata, basic information, and links to related items or detail. To open Metadata Lists from a graphical representation, see MetaModel.

Metadata Tools Metadata Tools are used to load, integrate, and view metadata in the metadata repository. Tools that permit update are visible only to those granted that authority. The MetaData Viewer is the major tool for viewing metadata.

MetaModel The MetaModel is a high level graphical representation of MetaData Viewer contents and their basic relationships.

Metric A business metric is any type of measurement used to gauge some quantifiable component of a company's performance.

Acronym Term DefinitionMetric Characteristic A characteristic or axis of analysis (a dimension) sets the context by which a metric or measurement can be

calculated. One or more characteristics will often be grouped together forming an analytical combination or group of related contexts by which said measurement can be analyzed.

Metric Synonym A Metric Synonym is a different name for a metric than the original or standard name. Metrics are given names in order to reference them, but a metric could be known by other names. Synonyms enable finding metrics when they are known by other names.

Model Type Model Type identifies the level that the Logical Data Model conforms to data modeling standards. The types are: Standardized, Tailored, External, and Business Access Model.

Moody's Investors Service A rating agency that assigns credit ratings to bonds and other debt issued by businesses and governments and insurance companies. Its ratings of insurance companies are based on asset quality, profitability, capital adequacy, asset-liability matching, liquidity, strength of company products, distribution systems, business strategy, regulations that may affect strength, management, company diversification, competition, and affiliations. The ratings indicate relative financial strength and ability to pay claims. The alphabetical ratings are Aaa Exceptional. Aa Excellent, A Good, Baa Adequate, Ba Questionable, B Poor, CAA Very Poor, CA Extremely Poor, and C Lowest.

Net Applications Applications which are received and accepted by Underwriting.Net Cash Generated Indicated whether the business is generating positive cash flow (inflow of cash is greater the outflow) or

negative cash flow (outflow of cash is greater than inflow for the month). It is the remainder when cash outflow is subtracted from inflow.

Net Frequency The number of annualized claims reported less claims closed without payment (CWP's) per 100 coverage in force (PIF for property). CWP's are excluded to offset possible distortions cause by opening practices.

Net Income The "bottom line" or profit after taking all revenues, then deducting all costs and expenses, and finally making any tax adjustments.

New Business Applications submitted by agents or premium generated from policies which have not yet renewed for the first time.

Non-Coded Domain A Non-Coded Domain is a Domain that does not have codes and values. Values for a non-coded Domain are not limited to a specific set. For instance, a Domain for "person's last name" could not be limited to a specific set of values. See also Domain.

Non-Recurring This is a unique expense, which requires that an order be placed each time a good or service is needed. One example would be a purchase of office supplies. Until a specific order is placed, no goods will be received and no billing takes place. Once the transaction is complete no further billing takes place until another order is placed.

Nova Data Mapping Viewer The Nova Data Mapping Viewer displays mappings from the Nova Data Mapping Repository. These mappings identify how specific fields are represented in various systems, including SSP, CDB, BOB and others.

Null A data type identifying that there is no data present. Data field is empty.Null Indicator Indicates whether or not a column or field may contain nulls.Numeric A data type identifying the type of data as a number.Object Business Objects are the data elements in a Business View. Objects are grouped into classes. Object

information may include where the object is located (table and column), codes and their meanings, derived or filter information as well as other business views where the object is used. See also "Business Objects tool"

Object Identifier Collection Collection has OIDs (Object Identifiers) used for Object Oriented Programming languages and are sequential identifiers of data.

Acronym Term DefinitionObject Type A Business View Object is classified as one of the following types: Data Column (has its data stored in a

project A, the firm has foregone the opportunity to use those same funds in some other project. The return could have been earned on an alternative project in opportunity cost.

Oracle A client/server relational database management system that presents a data structure as a table, consisting of a number of rows (or records) and a number of columns. Oracle database is typically used for medium to large scale applications.

Owner Name Name of the owner under which the database tables are defined.P and L Stands for "profit" and "loss" and refers to the Statement of Income.Paid Frequency The number of annualized claim closed with amount (CWA), per 100 coverages in force (PIF for property). It

reflects closure activity for a particular time period without regard to when the claim was reported. It also removes the impact that changes in opening practices have no frequency analysis.

Paid Losses The dollar amount of loss payments made while handling claims (opened and closed) in a given period.

Paid Pure Premium The average amount of paid loss plus allocated expense, per coverage in force (PIF for property). It is also equal to paid frequency times paid severity.

Paid Severity The paid loss and allocated expense per any partial payments on claims still openPar Value The face value of a bond.Payback Period The number of years required to return the investment outlay.Payroll Tax Business that hire employees are responsible for payroll tax, which is comprised of federal and state income

tax withholding, FICA (Social Security, and FUTA and SUTA (federal and sate unemployment).

Pending An open claim against a coverage, which is yet to be closed.Per Diem A fixed daily allowance covering meals and other daily expenses afforded a non-management employee

traveling for periods of one week (seven consecutive days) or more.Percent CWA Closed The percentage of closed claims that were closed with amount. The formula is: CWA divided by Claims

Closed.Percent CWP To Reported A ratio of claims closed without payment (either no payment or only an expense payment) to total claims

reported.Percentage Pending The relationship of pending claims to total reported claims.Percentage Variance The difference between two amounts.Physical Mappings Physical mappings identify the fields and columns where each Domain is used. It is called physical because it

refers to the physical database (as opposed to a logical data model) and mapping because the Domain information from CMS and the logical data model are mapped (linked) to the database information.

Physical Only Columns are physical only when they are not a part of the logical data model but may be used in queries.

Policy Termination Ratio A measure of the number of policies terminated relative to the number of gross policies in force.

Acronym Term DefinitionPolicy Year The summation of all polices and related premium and loss data issued with effective dates within one

calendar year, regardless of the year issued. By isolating one policy year, the effect of underwriting and other premium based on strategic programs can be more easily measured.

Precision The number of decimals in a column or field.Preferred Collection Collection is sanctioned by the Data Stewardship council.Preferred Definition A Business Definition given to a Table or Column in place of the Entity or Attribute and Domain definition.

Preferred Name A Business Name given to a Table or Column in place of the Entity or Attribute or Domain name. Sometimes a table or column is more recognizable if it is referred to by a more specific name.

Premium Cancellations A reduction of gross written premium caused by policy terminations, reductions in coverage, or other premium reducing endorsements.

Premium Per Coverage The premium charged for each coverage provided by a policy. An insured may pay $700 in premium. Of that, $190 might be the premium per coverage for Bodily Injury.

Premium Termination Ratio A measure of the amount of premium terminated or endorsed relative to the amount of gross written premium during the same time period.

Premium To Surplus Ratio Measures the cushion that an insurance company's surplus provides for absorbing unusually high losses and declines in investment values.

Premiums Written Total premiums for insurance written during a given period.Pro Rata Share To divide costs or expenses in proportionate shares based upon share footage.Production A Repository Area containing metadata for items in Production. For instance, if a Table is in Repository

Production, that Table has been implemented in systems Production.Profit The excess of the selling price over all cost and expenses incurred in making the sale.Profit Sharing Plan A qualified benefit plan that allows employees to share in the profits of the business; the amount of the

benefits the recipients collect depends on the profits of the business.Purchase Order (Form G98) - a form which is used to initiate an order for goods and services, obtain the required approvals,

and facilitate payment of the invoice. Generally used only when the vendor will be sending invoice directly to the Controller Department for payment. Uses may vary by each Region.

Pure Premium The average amount of dollars needed to pay losses and allocated expenses, per coverage in force.Rate Analysis The determination of the adequacy of current rates and the projected premium they will produce in light of the

anticipated losses that will be incurred.Realized Capital Gains (Losses) This income includes all net capital gains or losses from the sale of investments (stocks, bonds, etc). For

example, if Allstate bought 100 shares of stock for $10 a share ($1,000), and the stock value increased to $15 a share ($1,500), the "paper profit" would be $500. This $500 is considered an "unrealized" capital gain. When the stock is sold, it becomes a "realized" capital gain and is considered revenue.

Recurring Expense An expense where invoices will be generated regularly based upon a bill. Once a request for service is made and honored by the company, a bill will automatically be generated each month.

Reinsurance The means by which one carrier spreads the risk (premium, loss and expense) of potentially large loss or catastrophic situations with other carriers to protect against an isolated event causing financial strain or ruin.

Reinsurance Ceded The premium charged by one insurance company in exchange for reinsurance.Rejection Ratio The percentage of applications received and rejected by Underwriting to the total number of applications. It is

one indicator of the quality of new business submitted.Renewal Business All policies (or premium), which have renewed at least one time.

Acronym Term DefinitionRenewal Ratio A retention measurement used to track the number of insured who retain their policy when the current term

expires. The basic calculation is achieved by dividing the policies, which renew (GPI's) into the total number, which potentially could have (availables).

Reopen A claim, previously closed, but reopened due to additional loss or expense payments incurred subsequent to closure.

Report Year The calendar year a claim is reported and included in loss statistics regardless of when the loss occurred. All future incurred loss activity is recorded in the original report year. Report year data is most often used to monitor results related to claim handling (versus premium-based strategies).

Repository Area Repository Areas identify groupings of MetaData Viewer objects, usually for versioning.Reserve Change The change in reserve amounts (for Field, Home Office, IBNR and Reinsurance Recoverable) from one

period of time to another. It is the change in each reserve that is reflected in the statement of income results.

Reserve for Investigation A reserve established in Home Office and allocated to each Region to cover expected cost of investigating the event of a loss.

Reserves Dollars that are statistically set side to pay claims at some future date.Residual Market A general term describing the total of all consumers who have had difficulty purchasing insurance through

normal channels. Automobile Insurance Plans, FAIR Plans, Reinsurance Facilities, and Joint Underwriting Associations all service this market.

Revenues The sum of property-liability insurance premium earned; life insurance premium income and contract charges; invest income, less made.

Rule A Rule identifies valid combinations of Domain Collections or a valid subset of a Domain's values. For example, a Rule could identify which product lines are available and also permissible in certain states.

Rule Category Rules may be categorized as Aggregate Domain Rule or Valid Combination Rule.Rule Component The Domains or other Rules that are used in comprising this rule.Rule End Date The date when this Rule will no longer be valid.Rule Start Date The date when this Rule will be or became valid. you also have to know the Company Name, the State Name and the Product Name. A SDM table is built to evaluate these three fields and provide the Product Category.

Search Search provides typical internet type search capabilities. The initial search field is a simple search matching your criteria with the beginning of the names or definitions. Advanced Search allows more sophisticated search options.

Seasonals A measurement that takes seasonality into account. Historically, some figures follow a seasonal pattern. Seasonals are used during planning to anticipate routine monthly fluctuations over a period of years.

Server Name Server ID that the database is located on.Servicing Carrier Under a JUA, a limited number of insurance companies are designed as the carriers who will process policies

and settle claims.Servicing Carrier Credit The remuneration received by Servicing Carriers, from the Industry JUA, for the costs related to processing

JUA policies and settling claims.Severity See Paid Severity and Incurred Severity.Shareholder A person who invests in a corporation and becomes an owner by purchasing shares of stock.Shock Loss A single incurred loss of $10,000 or more. When losses are analyzed using a smaller base (agent PIF), a

single shock loss can distort the results. Oftentimes, these are removed to provide a clearer picture of the loss results.

Special Characters Collection Collection has codes with special characters such as &, #, $.SQL Server Structured Query Language Server is a client/server relational database management system that presents a

data structure as a table, consisting of a number of rows (or records) and a number of columns. SQL Server is typically used for small to medium scale applications.

Staging Area A Repository Area containing metadata for items that are new or are being modified before implementing the changes in Production. For instance, a Table could be in a Staging area to add or delete columns, or it could be in the Staging area because the entire Data Store was copied into the Staging Area to apply changes not related to that Table. An empty Staging area indicates there are no changes taking place currently in that area.

Standard and Poor's Insurance Company Ratings Ratings of insurance companies based on profitability, capitalization, investments, liquidity, management and corporate strategy, operating effectiveness, business and financial risk levels a company elects to support, projections of future performance, and industry specific risk, which affects financial quality over the long haul. A claim-paying ability rating indicates a company's capacity to meet insurance policy obligations. A qualified solvency rating differentiates between insurance companies that are likely to remain solvent and those that may be more likely to experience financial stress. For example, the ratings on the claim-paying ability scale, which are alphabetical, are AAA Superior, AA Excellent, A Good, BBB Adequate, BB Adequate but somewhat vulnerable, B Vulnerable, CCC Highly questionable, CC and C Vulnerable to liquidation, and D ordered to liquidate.

Standard Collection Collection contains basic codes and values without any special characters or blanks.Standard with Blank Collection Collection has basic codes and values with a blank code having a meaning.Standardized Model A Standardized Model is a Logical Data Model that fully conforms to logical data modeling standards. Model Type.Statistical Reserves The reserves established is Home Office for coverages such as PD and Collision. Case reserves are not

established in the MCO's, rather a countrywide average reserve is determined for each pending claims and month end.

Subledger A two-digit number specifying a detailed classification of expense within a ledger.

Acronym Term DefinitionSubrogation The amount received from action against third parties (claimants or their insurance companies) in cases

where the third party is liable. Upon indemnification, the insured assigns all right of action against a third party to their own insurance company. It is processed as a reduction to losses, being a component of paid losses.

Supplemental Reserves See Home Office Reserves.Surplus A stock company's surplus is the amount by which its admitted assets exceed its liabilities and capital stock. In

both stock and mutual companies, the term surplus-to-policyholders means the excess of admitted assets over liabilities.

Synonym A different name for a metadata item than the standard, or original, name. Synonyms exist for Domains, Entities, Attributes and Metrics. This enables finding the items when they are known by other names.

Tables Tables are the type of files used in relational Data Base Management Systems (DBMS), such as DB2 and Oracle. Tables are groups of Columns. A Table is modeled in a data model as an Entity.

Tailored Model A Tailored Model is a logical data model that for some reason does not fully conform to logical data model standards. See Model Type.

Tax Credit A deduction from one's tax liability given for specific activities such as investing in certain types of assets. (Investment tax credit).

TCI Application Id Transmittal Component Inventory (TCI) Application Identifier. TCI is the complete inventory of all components transmitted to production. TCI Application ID is the identifier given to identify components for a specific application. Typically the ID is 2 characters.

Text A data type identifying the type of data as character string containing alphanumeric characters.Trade Basis Expense Ratio An expense ratio that expresses an insurance company's cost of doing business by comparing underwriting

Unallocated Expenses See Claim Department Unallocated Expense.Underwriting Income or Loss The profit or loss experienced by a property and casualty insurance company after deducting from earned

premiums the incurred losses and expenses of doing business, but before provision of federal income tax. It excludes investment income.

Unearned Premium The money an insurer would have to give back under each policy for the unexpired term of the policy if were canceled.

Unearned Premium Reserve A liability (in accounting records) that reflect the premium dollars the insurance company would have to give back if all policy holders canceled their insurance.

Unit Cost Expenses related to a unit (PIF, Agents) divided by the number of units. The formula is: Expenses divided by Number of Units

User Name ID of the user given permission to access the database catalog information.
