Continued from page 1The aim of the 7-year funding programme is to transform outdoorspaces and to encourage everyone in the community to getinvolved. The Cefn Mawr bid was selected as one of the final 16 from62 applications across Wales. The final Stage 2 bid has to be submitted by 7th December with 6 or

7 winners to be announced in March 2017. The bid is being written and co-ordinated by Dee Valley TrustCIC. The ideas we are developing have bee put forward by our partners and local community groups. They have to fit the bid criteria and they must provide opportunities for local people to participate. Byhaving a number of different related projects, rather than one big idea, we are hoping to encourage morepeople to get involved. Here is a summary of our plans:

The Cefn Arch and Picnic Area, Crane Street car park - a recognised viewing point for thePontcysyllte Aqueduct project lead Cllr David Taylor

Restoration of Village Pathways project lead Sonia Benbow-Jones CC & Kris Morrison CRNCA Re-creation of Georgian Gardens at Plas Kynaston lead The Georgian Trust Creation of Community Gardens and an Orchard at Rhosymedre project lead Cllr Derek Wright

Chair, Cefn Regeneration Partnership Re-purposing Jessops Tramway to provide horse drawn transport link with Pontcysyllte

Aqueduct project lead Dave Metcalf PKC Creation of an accessible Pathway & Sensory Garden linking TESCOs car park with the high

street aka Well Street project lead Mark Lacey DVT Re-opening Ebenezer Centre as a community building, heritage centre and Information point

project team Janine Beggin WCBC, Ken Bathers Chair, CC and DVT Implementing a Tree Management Strategy to restore key views to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

project lead Cllr Derek Wright CRP Signposting - physical signage, visitor website and i-beacons to promote the area and provide

historical and cultural information Sonia Benbow-Jones CC & DVTOur overall aim is this: We the people of Cefn will transform our heritage spaces to attract more visitorsand regenerate our community. We would like to deliver as many of these projects as possible usingvolunteers from the community, working alongside qualified trainers. Volunteers will able to learn newskills, make new friends and take pride in improving the environment for the local community. We also want people to get involved in the management and governance of local organisations involvedin the programme. For more information, please visit our Facebook page Back to the future 4 Cefn Mawr and/or follow ourTwitter account @BTTFCefnMawr. We welcome all of your comments and ideas. We will be issuing aspecial Community Newsletter at the end of this month to let you know how we are getting on and to inviteyou to attend our open door event at George Edwards Hall from 19th – 23rd September. There will beinformation displays about each of the projects and a member of the team will be on hand to discuss theplans with you and to collect your views on the proposals. We are hoping that this will be the start of something big for Cefn Mawr and our whole community. This isa competition and as they say, “we are in it to win it”, but we can’t win it without the help and support ofthe community, so please contribute in any way that you feel able.Mark Lacey Manager, Dee Valley Trust email: [email protected]

TOWNSCAPE HERITAGE INITITIVE This year has seen some significant alterations to severalbuildings within the village, most notably on Well Street and at Plas Kynaston. On Well Street, the THI hasgrant funded the refurbishment of 4 prominent buildings and since the last report in April we are pleased toreport that works to all 4 buildings are now nearing final completion. The works to 29 Well Street, DevaHouse, Belgravia House and Bank Buildings have substantially transformed their appearance throughcareful repair and authentic reinstatement of traditional and historic architectural features including shopfronts, windows, doors and decorative details. These features often add significantly to the specialcharacter and appearance of each building and enhance the wider streetscape.

Plas Kynaston the work is still is progressing onthe hall which so far has seen the reinstatementof the original roof construction with hipped roofsover the bays and reintroduction of lost dormerwindows. A hard and damaging cement render hasbeen removed from the front elevation andreplaced with a traditional lime render and soonwork will commence to reinstate lime plasterfinishes and joinery features to the buildinginterior. Repairs are also planned to the mainstaircase which is a particular feature of interestwithin the property. It is anticipated that works torepair and convert the property to 6 apartmentswill be completed by early autumn.’

INVEST LOCAL PLAS MADOC -FUN AT THE FAIR TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF PLAS MADOCInvest Local Plas Madoc held its first community event in July. The group put on a funday with a fair at the Opportunities Centre, and as tenants and residents bought theirwristbands (£2 adult, £1 child) they were asked about what is important to them in theircommunity, and if they'd like to get a bit more involved in the programme. Invest LocalOfficer for Plas Madoc Gwen Thirsk said: “We asked people about what it’s like living inPlas Madoc – what’s good about it, what could improve life, and what’s important tothem and their families.” The event was a great success and we've managed to speak to about 800 peoplebecause of it!Invest Local is a new programme, givingpeople in 13 communities across Wales thechance to choose their priorities for theirlocal community. Funded by Big Lottery, thereis £1 million available over 10 years. Seewww.bct.wales for more info.WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?After the fair, we'll look at what residentsand tenants said about living in Plas Madocand what’s important to them. We need tomake sure that as many people as possiblefrom the community are involved, so we’ll bespeaking to lots of different people and groupsabout this over the coming months. The next stage will be to develop a plan forthe local area, identifying projects andpriorities for spending the £1million in PlasMadoc over the next 10 years.

Our next event is a Tea Dance to beheld on Wednesday 31st

August at 2-4pm at Plas MadocLeisure Centre. We would love to see you there!ABOUT THE GROUP AND HOWTO GET INVOLVED:There are 9 of us in theInvest Local group so far - and we'rekeen for there to be more of us!Almost all of us live in PlasMadoc (and if not we used to andnow work and/or volunteer here). The one big thing we have incommon is that we are allpassionate about Plas Madoc! YSGOL CEFN MAWRWe had a great day at the CrusadersCup Grand Finals Day in July. Thegirls did amazingly well. They wonthe Crusaders Cup! They played fourgames in the morning coming secondin their pool. In the semi final we

played Ysgol Derwen from Flintshire. It was scoreless after 10 mins we played anadditional 10 mins and still no score, then playedanother 5 minutes with a player less on each sideand still scoreless. So we had a coin toss and wewon the coin toss. Both teams playing to such ahigh standard that the defence wouldn't let a try in.We then beat Ysgol Plas Coch 2 tries to 1 in thefinal. Resulting in the girls being named the besttouch rugby team in Wrexham and Flintshire. Theydid so well! There is a nice article on the Wales Rugby Leaguewebsite and we had a letter published in theWrexham Leader and Rugby League Weekly. ITVWales want to film the girls team training at schoolin September for a news item. We have contactedlocal companies for potential sponsorship for a newkits and Kronospan have replied so far. The boysunfortunately didn't make it to the semi final, however Kos Jones won Man of Steel - The bestboy player of the tournament.

P K C G R O U P U P D A T E

A successful meeting was held in the Holly Bush Inn on the 7th of July where other groups and externalorganisations were invited to join us in the drive to regenerate the economy of the Cefn & Cefn Mawr. CefnMawr is a post industrial community and according to WCBC has the highest unemployment in the county ofWrexham. This may be be further aggravated when commercial rates are reintroduced as planned by the localauthority which could turn our community into a ghost town as more shops are forced into closure.

Therefore to head off further recession and depression in our community we are trying to get Cefn Mawrestablished on the tourist map. To provide a practical first step for this we have applied for over half a millionpounds in grant funding to reconnect Cefn Mawr to the Aqueduct. This first step consists of four main parts, (1)Opening up Windborne Gate parking for direct access to the aqueduct. This gives us a large capacity main park-ing area which is an equal distance to the aqueduct as it is to Cefn Mawr. A simple “YOU ARE HERE” signwill then point in one direction for the aqueduct and in the other for Cefn Mawr. (2) Jessop’s Tramway, this in-volves opening up 300mts of what was “Oily Works Road” through the former Monsanto Works. Horse drawnhackney carriages will then be able to operate between Cefn Mawr, the aqueduct and WBG parking bringingpeople into our community as well as visiting the aqueduct. (3) Reopening the Ebenezer as an Arts and VisitorCentre for the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site. This will then give us a major tourist attraction at the centre ofour community encouraging people to come. This would be linked in to a Cartographic Museum in the HollyBush Inn and the Cefn Community Museum in the George Edwards Hall. (4) Large main road brown & whiteTourist Information Signs telling people where Cefn Mawr is. Cefn Mawr is the most poorly signed communityin the whole of the WHS corridor and has been excluded or misrepresented on the majority of tourist infor-mation guidance. To date we have raised £20K and will have a total of 50K to put against the larger grant fund-ing bids if WCBC will work with us. We have submitted bids for a second time and arecompeting against other major groups sponsored by local authorities in Wales, and there is no guarantee that wewill get though, but we are trying. If we are successful we will try to ensure that all construction work etc. goesto local firms and contractors to provide more practical help with our local economy. If we are successful ingetting through to the second stage of the grant funding process we will need as much local support as you cangive us and we will let you know accordingly. If you would like to know more or want to join in please callround to the Holly Bush Inn and we will be glad to see you there.
