Acoustic Louvers Selection Criteria
Water Penetration
AMCA 500L defines the beginning point of water penetration as
the free area velocity at which 0.01 (0.0003 L) ounces of water
per square foot of free area is measured to pass through a 48"
48" (1219 mm x 1219 mm) louver during a 15 minute period.
The AMCA water penetration test provides a method for
comparing louver models and designs as to their efficiency in
resisting the penetration of rainfall under specific lab conditions.
The manufacturer recommends that intake louvers are selected
with a reasonable margin of safety below the beginning point of
water penetration in order to avoid unwanted water penetration
during severe storm or wind driven rain conditions.
Selection Criteria
Using the Pressure Drop chart, select a free area velocity that yields an acceptable
pressure drop with minimal water penetration.
1. Determine louver free area:
