If you think about it, wherever your outletis, to a soakaway, a gully, a sewer etc, thispoint is fixed. So, you have little flexibilityand therefore this is your starting point;normally with a sump.

We then work backwards to what weearlier referred to as the start of thechannel. This procedure will give yousome degree of flexibility – you can extendor reduce the length of channel required.

Neil’s first training tip is on:INSTALLATION – WHERE TO BEGIN*

Few would argue that the end of the channelis where the outlet is; making the other endthe start of the channel.

However, when it comes to installing ourproduct the terms start and end can be thesource of some confusion because we beginan installation at the end of the channel – theoutlet! Confused? Don’t be, it’s easy!

Dig trench 318mm wide(218mm wide if against a structure) by 200mmdeep for channel (400mmdeep for sump). Markfinishing height with fixedline 3mm below finalsurface. Lay 100mm(min.) bed of concrete.

Knock out pre-formed outletfrom the inside (markedwith hammer symbol) orfit sump or outlet endcap.Position sump or outletchannel on concrete bed, fit U-PVC union/trap todrainage pipework.

Lay channels starting fromoutlet/sump, ensuring jointsconnect by lowering unitshorizontally. Fit end caps toend channel. For fullywatertight joints, use asuitable sealant (contactACO for further advice).

With gratings fitted, hauncharound channels/sumps withconcrete (or for Load Class A 15 only, haunch withsuitable fill material). Finalsurface to be 3mm abovegrating. Bricks/pavioursshould be laid in mortar forlateral stability.

WEATHERING THE STORM The first installation of the new ACO StormTank modularsurface water attenuation and infiltration system hasbeen completed at Perkins Engines’ manufacturingfacility in Stafford. A key part of a sustainable drainagesystem (SUDS) designed by ACO Technologies, the65m3 modular tank system attenuates and controls thedischarge of surface water run-off from a new lorry parkthat has been created to ease vehicle movementsacross the site.

Installed beneath the new concrete hardstanding, thewatertight tank receives run-off (via an oil interceptor)from a single 65m run of ACO S100 heavy duty surfacedrainage channel situated along one side of the park.From the tank, water is discharged to a nearby streamat a controlled maximum rate of 3 litres/second. Duringheavy rainfall, excess water held back by a vortexcontrol in the outlet chamber accumulates within thetank, releasing over time as rainfall conditions ease.The ACO StormTank was installed by Stafford-basedcontractor F. Espley & Sons Ltd. As Contracts ManagerAndrew Bramhall explains, the modular systemdelivered particular site benefits: “As the system hassuch a high void ratio, we were able to reduce the totalvolume of the excavation required to accommodate thetank – a significant time and cost saving. It was alsoextremely easy to handle; the lightweight, modulardesign meant that we were able to assemble the entiretank in under a day.”In combination with a suitable geotextile orgeomembrane, ACO StormTank can be configured toeither infiltrate or attenuate run-off depending on thespecific requirements of the location. The tank installedat the Perkins Engines’ site is set up to attenuate allsurface water.To achieve the watertight installation required, the tankis first wrapped in an impermeable geomembrane. It isthen covered with a protective ACOTex Plus fleece toachieve a completely sealed and stable structure.

Ebbsfleet. The site was developed by London

& Continental Stations and Properties

(LCSP), the property subsidiary of London &

Continental Railways, operators of the high

speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

High volumes ofvehicle andpedestrian trafficmeans that it isessential thedrainage networkremoves surfacewater as quickly as

possible andprovides sufficient

storage to cope with

sudden downpours.

are used together to make a suitable drainage

network for the site, which includes four car

parks with 9000 spaces, station platforms and

the perimeter of the main terminal.

MULTI-TASKINGDRAINAGECapable of withstanding loads from Class Athrough to Load Class D, MultiDrain MD notonly increases the sales potential for onesystem, it also provides maximum flexibilityfrom a reduced

number ofcomponents,simplifying salesprocessing, stockcontrol and order

scheduling.

There are three sizes inMultiDrain MD range:M100D, M150D and

M200D providingchannelwidths of100mm,

150mm and 200mmrespectfully. Available in 0.5 and 1.0 metrelengths, the end of each channel section iscast with a male/female connector thatallows rapid installation and, with the use ofan appropriate sealant, a watertight joint.

MultiDrain MD is made from a lightweightpolymer concrete channel profile that includesintegrated UltraSTEEL™ edge rails. Thesework in combination with a range of gratingsthat are designed for specific Load Classapplications. Ranging from cast iron,galvanised and stainless steel through tocomposite and brickslot, the gratings can beeasily changed or removed for maintenanceusing ACO's new Drainlock™ bar-less lockingsystem. Once in place, a new anti-shuntsurface between the edge rails and gratingprevents any lateral movement.

It has a higher hydraulic capacity and is lessprone to blockage due to the bar-lessDrainlock system and its external profileimproves stability and anchors the channelmore securely into the concrete surround.
