Welcome to the first edition of Foundation for 2018

Dear Colleagues,

I am sure you will agree that the announcement at the Annual Company Meeting (ACM) of £71 million raised since inception highlights the incredible and continued generosity of the St. James’s Place community. Particular in 2017 with a record £5.7 million – £17.1 million raised with double matching to celebrate 25 years of the Foundation. The ACM featured the launch of Dean Stott’s Foundation sponsored efforts to raise £1 million for mental health charities over the next year (featured in this edition).

It also provided us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mike Wilson’s significant contribution to the Foundation. A joint founder

of the Foundation, he has also served 26 years as a Trustee, the last six as our Chairman. The vision, skills, entrepreneurial and generous spirit of both Mike and Sir Mark Weinberg set the Foundation on its path to success, as they did for the company. An important part of the Foundation’s giving history is its support for the charity Hope and Homes for Children (HHC); a total of £7 million has been donated to support its work with orphaned and abandoned children. Mike is a big supporter of HHC and he has visited Eastern Europe to see their vital work in person. HHC CEO Mark Waddington paid tribute to Mike recently:

“For those who believe that success needs to be measurable, then Mike has aced it. But for those of us who

also see success in other ways – inspiring colleagues to always do

better, imbuing respect and kindness in the way an organisation works and harnessing that to make the world a better place for everyone to live in –

then Mike has defined it.”

These insightful words from Mark feature in Mike’s book, also mentioned at the ACM, ‘How to be Chief Executive of Your Own Life’. Not only does the book give the reader insight into Mike’s successful business principals, it also highlights his passion for helping people in need. The final chapter of the book, ‘Best Kept Secret’, focuses on the success of the Foundation, as well as Mike’s pride in the part he has played in this, with an incredible 90% of Partners and employees giving on a monthly basis.

To pre-order copies of Mike’s book, please refer to the back cover of this newsletter.

Thank you for your continued and generous support of the Foundation: it is very much appreciated.

Best wishes for 2018.

At the 2018 Annual Company Meeting, Clare Balding introduced Dean Stott a former UK special forces soldier and friend of HRH Prince Harry, to the St. James’s Place community. Dean embarks on an epic adventure and a new sport, as he attempts to pedal 14,000 miles along the Pan-American Highway in a world record time, in partnership with the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation.

Together the aim is to challenge the mental health stigma, to raise awareness

and £1 million for the eight Heads Together charities, The Mix, Place2Be, Contact, Mind, CALM, Best Beginnings, Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and Young Minds.

Dean’s fundraising has got off to an incredible start with Partners and employees attending the Partners’ Dinner generously donating a total of £265,485 – a big thank to everyone who contributed. A further £265,485 will be added via Company matching to benefit other mental health charities.

In 2017 the St. James’s Place community agreed to add Improved Mental Health for all ages as a theme to help guide future grant giving. Both the Trustees and the National Committee are currently considering various UK projects all aimed at improving the mental health of people at risk – more details to follow soon.

Lifetime achievement award – Mike WilsonIn an emotional climax to his speech, David presented a Charitable Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award to St. James’s Place co-founder, Mike Wilson.

His work as Chairman of the Foundation over the last six years has been instrumental in many aspects of our success.

David also took the opportunity to present the award in person to Mike, who was a surprise guest at the meeting

and his partner Sophie spoke on his behalf to thank all who have contributed to the Foundation.

£150,000 granted to

Jamie’s Farm

The aim of Jamie’s Farm is to boost young people’s wellbeing and self-esteem, and to improve their behaviour and the way in which they engage with education and school, leading to fewer exclusions.

Working as a catalyst for change among disadvantaged young people aged 10–16 principally from urban areas of London,

Manchester, Birmingham and the South-West – the farm enables those at risk of social and academic exclusion to thrive. This is achieved through a unique one-week residential experience and follow-up programme, combining ‘Farming, Family and Therapy’.

Operational over two sites in Bath and Hereford, Jamie’s Farm has a new site in Monmouth, with plans to open a fourth in Lewes, East Sussex in 2019.

The Foundation has given a major grant of £150,000 to fund three years’ salary of the education manager at the new Jamie’s Farm site in Monmouth. The education manager will be responsible for 450 disadvantaged young people, coordinating visits, both on-site and in the transition back to school, through programme follow-ups.

Panathlon updateStaff from St. James’s Place said they felt “privileged” to act as volunteers at the Yorkshire Primary Panathlon in York on 4 December. The Foundation is one of Panathlon’s principal sponsors, and volunteers from our Leeds office were on hand at the Poppleton Centre to encourage, cajole, organise and officiate as seven primary schools from across the region competed for the title of ‘Yorkshire Primary Champions’.

St Augustine’s CE School from Halifax were the victors by some distance, with a total of 48 points. St Augustine’s had qualified by virtue of winning the West Yorkshire Primary Panathlon back in February. They finished ahead of nearest challengers Abbey School, from

Rotherham, and Girlington Primary School, from Bradford, which finished level on 33 points each.

Volunteer Jonathan Kattenberg (below left) was particularly energetic in assisting children in the skittles event. His energy wasn’t surprising, as he is currently training for a challenging fundraising effort for the Foundation. In February, Jonathan will be walking the course of the 1,000-mile dog sled race from Alaska to Whitehorse in Canada, trekking an average of 45 miles a day through sub-zero temperatures, up and down peaks of 4,000ft, with a 40-kilo sled tied to his back – alone. “I just can’t resist a challenge!” he quipped.

Jon Ellis, a St. James’s Place volunteer, said:

“For me, this is not selfless; – it’s selfish, because I get just as much enjoyment out of it

as the children! You just can’t buy this: the competition, the interaction, the fulfilment the

children get from it and, of course, their smiles.”

Supporting Nepal’s ChildrenIn April 2015 a major earthquake shook Nepal, causing loss of life, and leaving a trail of destruction and devastation across communities. Over 46,000 classrooms that were damaged or destroyed, with nearly 1 million children unable to go to school.

Over the last three years Supporting Nepal’s Children has played an active role in repairing some of the affected schools. Along with a group of dedicated St. James’s Place Partners and employees who raised over £300,000, (excluding Company matching) they have rebuilt schools in Chhoprak, Rocham, Lalitpur and Kathmandu. In November last year, 22 volunteers visited Nepal to personally help rebuild the schools that they had raised money to support.

London to Paris – Porta challengeA group of Partners from Porta Wealth Management took on an incredible challenge of cycling from London to Paris in 24 hours. They raised an amazing total of £47,039 (including double matching).

With eight riders and a support vehicle, the 250km bike ride started outside their office at Finsbury Circus on a cloudy Friday afternoon in October. From there, it was down through Sussex and on to Newhaven where they set sail for France. Arriving in Dieppe at 3am with little sleep, they then had the long 150km stretch to Paris. After a couple of breaks, including a mandatory boulangerie pitstop, they arrived at the Arc de Triomphe at 3.40pm French time, meaning they had achieved their goal in 22 hours 40 minutes.

With the support of their friends, family, colleagues and clients, they raised a total of £47,039 for the Foundation. Special mention must go to Andrew Croft, who agreed personally to match anything they raised at the City location meeting back in October.
