EDITORIAL 3June ‘09 - March ‘10

I am not sure wheremy feet will lead me aftergraduation. Pursuing a higherdegree, though, seems to beno longer an option. Gettinga job in the capitalist world, meanwhile, does not soundpromising if one considersthe dismal employmentstatistics being reported onradio, TV and thenewspapers. I am still in adeep thought where will I findmyself after receiving myprecious diploma.

Graduation is said to open anew chapter in one’s life. Inthis seemingly godforsakencountry, where exploitationhas become the norm, thatnew chapter might not beexciting. Finishing collegemight mean starting a newlife of being unemployed andpenniless. Despite theassurances of friends that Ihave a good career ahead ofme, I cannot help butentertain the thought that Imight remain unemployedmany years after graduation. But to worry about my futureseems unbecoming of aperson who clearly sees thatthere is still hope and whoknows that hope canmaterialize because of mefulfilling that hope to happen.Future graduates, like me,face a problem far biggerthan the high probability of notlanding a decent job. Whileeveryone worries about thedifficulty of finding one, wecan all start by having theright attitude in perseveringand the positive outlook inconquering the fear that mayengulf us that there is nothingin store for us in a country aspoor as ours.

As we exit theacademe, therefore, weeither take the path ofpessimism or trudge theroad towards optimismand do something.

Somebody abused his freedom ofexpression and exploited the use of socialnetworking to spread biasedpronouncements against me. I remembersomeone told me that a noisy container hasnothing inside but a full receptacle makes noannoying sound at all. I am no saint and Ihave my temper. But I just don’t engage in asquabble just for the heck of proving I candefend myself in a fight. ACLC has taughtme that no amount of lies can destroy one’sreputation – in the end, the truth will prevailand the genuinely brilliant people will standout. To ACLC – you have finally found yourroad to redemption after what you have gonethrough, - and you taught me 1 golden lesson:Nobody can put a good man down.

GRADUATION DAY ISJUST A FEW WEEKS AWAY.And as that day gets nearer, Ifeel a peculiar mixture ofanxiety and excitement.Anxious about the possibility ofnot surviving the outsidecompetitive world; until I finishmy task as the Editor-In-Chiefof our school paper and passall my exams, having a singlenight of decent sleep willcontinue to be elusive; justsimply out of reach. At thesame time, I feel very excitedabout finally getting the highlyprized ACLC Diploma, which Ibelieve to be a ticket to mybright future. After al l,overcoming the much-feareddefense for SYSDES andpassing its written exam givesone some bragging rights forgraduation.

I have always been abeliever in the saying thateducation is not confinedwithin the four walls of aclassroom. So I have cut a fewclasses in order to learnpragmatic principles by justsimply talking to the schoolguard and engaging a casualtalk from a not-so-goodmorning of the schoolmaintenance. I am tasked asa campus journalist – and mymeticulous adviser told me thatthe best news articles andstories can be found along thesidewalks and common peoplewe usually ignore. I havejoined campaigns to promoteenergy conservation (EarthHour). If there is one thing thatmakes my college yearsfulfilling, the fact that I havesomehow contributed to thenation, even though mycontribution pales incomparison with those madeby several martyrs on thestreets shouting - mine is donein the simplest and the mostsi lent manner –throughwriting.

Just recently, Ichanced upon somegroup of studentsfrenzied upon a piece of paper attached tothe glass wall of the admission office. Beingone of the silent minority, I barely glancedat the content of the paper when I heardsomeone said – “Recognized naman palatayo ng CHED.” And that made me raise mybrows and finally look at the paper’s content. The issue wasn’t new to me. It’s a commonknowledge to almost three-fourths of theACLC population. And the series of hearsaysand bad remarks lambasting not only theinstitution but the people running the schoolwere as affected as a house infected bytermites. Specific people were given enoughdefamatory words to last them a lifetime. But these people weren’t just ordinarypeople, so don’t ask why they’re still in theservice after braving the tempest of a badpublicity. I once had the same experience.

Lessons from a ChildBy Michael Legaspi

As one grows old, one tends to forget the little details about his/her childhood . As a result, one overlooks many lessons that childhood hasimparted upon us.

We seldom laugh about small matters anymore. We are so immersed with our never-ending quest for the fountain of youth that we forgetthe fact that in order to make its power work on us, we have to laugh like a child while singing under the rain or feeling the rays of thesunshine.

Children are most honest with their feelings, yet adults, seasoned as they seem and have felt every emotion known to man, hide what’son their mind. Adults seldom sit and talk anymore, while children, often say “bati na tayo”, with just five minutes interval from a fight.Children are always happy because their wants and needs are simple. True enough, if only adults apply the simplicity of these concepts ,then we could have more contentment and real joy as we live each day of our lives.

I wonder if she already met Mr. Right?Every time the moonlight dim

Longing for this fair lady can’t be seemHer pretty face fills me up with joy

Thus being with her is enjoyNow time has come, I let go of thisThis feeling I kept as I reminisceBeing with you is not just a wish

But a chance that I will never miss

But if my destiny doesn’t permit meIf the time is not yet right

For you to love meI will be here, still waiting

Maybe someday, we’ll be together as oneAs I wish we could be

GabbyGabbyGabbyGabbyGabbyBy Sabriya Corido

It’s almost 2pm and I was wondering how she would look like in her wedding dress. Thinking about that, I felt a sudden pang of sadness somewhat akin to adeath of a loved one, but it’s even worse this time – I feel a part of me is just about to die.

I should give her a call...I told myself, but some nagging thought is preventing me from doing so. But I need to hear her voice if only for the last time...I met Jamie back in a time when I was still nursing a wounded heart from a relationship Ithought was made in heaven. Jamie had only few friends then because others see her assnub, but I see her as cautious; others perceive her as stiff, but I see her as strong-willed.Winning her friendship did not come easy but when I finally had it, my tough Jamie became

my instant defender, my saviour from bullies around.I was born with a weak heart. I can only take very little pain and pressure or I’ll die young

according to my doctors. When I had my first heartbreak, my family thought I’d never survive–then came Jamie, it was like a new life sprung out from an already dead me. Jamie taughtme patiently how to embrace the inner strength I have and the courage found in admitting I

am weak but this doesn’t make me less of a human. The church was almost crowded when I finally arrived. After finding myself longing more formy Jamie than just hearing her voice over the phone, I decided to see her in her wedding

gown.A couple of minutes passed then I saw the bridal car.

The moment she slowly got out of the car, there was silence is in the air.Everybody was excited looking at the beautiful bride.

It was like a dream coming to life...I saw before my eyes the very scene I have ever wanted – the only person I have wanted to walk with me on this sameaisle, on this same journey towards simple togetherness and love on a daily basis.

I drifted back to reality from my own dreamland when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. It was Zach- my male buddy.“Hey ol’ pal how come you’re here?”

“I only came here to see her for the last time.”“Didn’t you tell her?”

“Tell her what?”“You coward...” Coward.

That word. It still echoes to my ears as I was the last person to step out of the church. Yes, I may have the strength to let go of my painful past and may havegiven myself a chance to celebrate life as God’s gift. I may have the strength to accept the things I can’t change and believe in love again - and it’s because of

that one person – my brave, tough but loving Jamie. But the irony of it all, I don’t have the strength to tell her that I love her so.

Excuse me, you can share with me if you want...A tall guy my age said as he offered to me his umbrella one rainy afternoon. I was a bit surprised, but I accepted it anyway.

Along wtih other several students standing in a shed at the UN Avenue, I was lucky to receive such an offer to a total stranger. Ina world where people just come and go, run to and fro your life, rarely would there be a kind soul who would freely displaysimple acts of love to people they barely know. My already soaked uniform was thankful together with my mind so worried of thecold I would surely catch.

I wonder: Could he be an angel in human disguise?

So we started talking to walk along the Taft Avenue, too shy to even ask each others name, so I just fumble inside my pocket toplay with few coins - or is it to shun away my thoughts from the idea that I’m this close to somebody I don’t really know.

The day after, it was still raining, I forgot to bring the umbrella Mom told me to bring. So I have to wait again in this shed till theheavy downpour stops. Surprisingly, I met again the guy who offered his umbrella yesterday. And this time, I was able to get hisname: Gabriel.

He’s studying at the school just opposite to ours, and that day, he smiled and gestured to me a “share-with-me-my-umbrella”offer. I didn’t hesitate; again I accepted his offer.

He was a blessing in disguise. A savior, or in a much appropriate term, he was a knight in shining...umbrella, uh, I mean, armor.

Gabriel or Gabby came at the time when I least expected. His help may seem a little ordinary but it saved my day. I’ve knownhim only for three days, but it was like there’s a sense of familliarity simply hard to ignore, it was like I’ve known him for a longtime.

On the fourth day with an expectant heart, I looked for him at the shed. But he wasn’t there.

The day that followed, I accidentally met one of his schoolmates who happen to know him. I asked about Gabby, I was appalledby his answer:

“Oh, Gabby? Gabby Lorenzo? The very generous and kindhearted Gabby... he died last Monday”...

The day we first met...

Affiliate or Referral Marketing

Promoting products or services for others is an ideal way for astudent to earn extra income over the summer and even beyond. Thereare the traditional affiliate products, offered through Clickbank.com,CommissionJunction.com and other affiliate marketing portals. With these, you typically earn a large percentage of any sale that is made throughyour affiliate link. Many people make a great living at this type ofmarketing, but beware that the competition is fierce and there is a lot toget started.

Another option that has less competition is to offer to sendreferrals to qualified service providers. This may take a little more time upfront to find vendors you trust that are willing to work with you, but afterthat your job is simply to refer people to the vendors for the services orproducts they need, and when they buy, you earn.

Sure, times are rough and it will be hard for students to findtraditional jobs this summer. But opportunity abounds for those that arewilling to think and work outside the box. The added bonus is that theexperience will build what can possibly become a lifetime ofentrepreneurship that you just can’t get working at the local fast foodplace.

Summer is right around the corner and that means time on the hands of students with a summer break. \You can holda weekly yard sale. If you have a lot of stuff that you have been dying to get rid of, hold a yard sale every week or everyother week during the summer. You will make some money and clear out some storage space and pay good wages to theirhelp. Check out boardwalks, theme parks and resorts to see what positions they have available. In a tight economy with lotsof older folks competing for traditional summer jobs, this might be the perfect opportunity to try something a little different. Inthe past manual labor or food service were the main options, today, a student only needs to look inside his or her ownexperiences to find ways to make money on the Internet that older adults can’t invade.

Videographer

Yes, there are many video experts already making a livingon the Internet. But, with video the hottest thing on the web, anenterprising student can find a lot of small business owners willing tohire them over the expensive video production companies to find alow cost way to add video to their site, You Tube or their blog.Even better, offer a package that can do all three. A student’scurrent mobile device could create good enough quality videos formost purposes.z

Social Networking and List Building

Many students have practically grown up with MySpace,Facebook and Twitter, and know all the cool ways people can usethose resources. Time to expand that experience to the businessworld and help all those small business people who know they“should” be involved, but don’t know how to get started or havetime to learn what to do.

Offer a social media set up and training package where youdo the setup and then offer training and support. You could even tieinto the package newsletter and list building service and emailpromotions into the mix.

WHO IS TO SAY ONE HAS A better health profile than another? Is there a

7. Thou shall switch off and do nothing regularly.

Healing energyWe live in a planet resplendently filled with flora and fauna. All the roots of trees are anchored deep in the center of the earth where the life force is

strongest. Thus, all plant life is alive and imbued with living energy. But did you know plants have emotions?

Cleve Backster, an American polygraph expert, proved through his experiments that plants have feelings that they can connect with each other and other living

beings. Through a polygraph test connected to the plants, stress levels were observed when a person killed a plant in the same room where other plants were

monitored. Because plants have the capacity to give and receive energy, they can be used to help cleanse a room and increase its good energy. If you have

never recognized the healing abilities of plants, it’s time to do so. You may do the following:

1. Hug a tree.

2. Talk to your plants.

3. Walk into a forest.

4. Visit a green park.

5. Plant a tree.

Skin saversNothing beats the power of Vitamin C-rich foods to heal skin. Stock up on fruits like orange, lemon, calamansi and guava. The higher the C content,

the greater the healing benefits to your body. Concentrate on rough spots like elbows, feet, and knees. Follow with a cool shower.

Affirm today: “The healer is inside me.”

The next time someone brags about what agreat multitasker they are, you may wantto let them know they are actually payingbig mental price.

People who regularly consume multipleforms of media simultaneously – listeningto an iPod, sending instant message, checking e-mails and watching an onlinevideo – consistently perform worse thanthose who prefer to complete one task at atime, according to us researchers. A teamfrom Stanford University put 100 studentsthrough a series of three test. They foundthat the heavy media multitaskers were notable to pay attention, control their memory,or switch from one job to another assuccessfully as the low multitasking group.
