ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This is a special acknowledgement to the International Confederation of Midwives for their contribution and commitment to women and infants in limited resource settings. The concept for this supplement was developed from presentations during a symposium at the 26th International Confederation of Midwives congress, which was chaired by Gwen Brumbaugh Keeney, CNM, PhD. The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is a Confederation of 83 national midwifery associations, representing midwives worldwide. Its mission is to advance the aims and aspirations of midwives in the attainment of improved outcomes for women in their childbearing years, their newborns, and their families. The ICM’s Global Strategy sets out how this mission is to be achieved by raising the profile of midwives and midwifery at every level and in every setting where women and their babies receive care; strengthening midwifery associa- tions and promoting their capacities and their influence; and—through the activities of the member associations— ensuring that women and babies are offered the high-quality, evidence-based skilled care that will optimise healthy outcomes in childbearing.
