Big and exciting changes and

updates. New teachers. New

staff members. And, new

integrative learning

space...Oh my!

This summer we hired two

new full-time teachers for our

staff here at the Palmetto

School. The teachers were

hired for our grades 3-5 and 6

-8 classrooms. We also have

a new marketing director and

we are building a STEAM lab

behind our school, which real-

ly gets the students talking.

We are excited to introduce

our 3-5 grade teacher, Melis-

sa Burns who studied at Fran-

cis Marion University. She

comes to us from the Rock

Hill School District where she

taught grades 2-6. Melissa

lives in Tirzah with her dog

Prissy and loves to spend

time with family and friends,

traveling, and musicals.

Melissa says “she is most

excited about building rela-

tionships with some awesome

kids.”

Next, we are thrilled to intro-

duce Michelle Fitzgerald from

Myrtle Beach. She was hired

to teach our 6-8th graders.

Michelle studied at Western

Governors University and

comes to us with 10 years of

experience in education. She

just moved to Rock Hill with

her husband and son and has

a daughter back in Myrtle

Beach. She likes to spend

time with family and travel in

her free time. Michelle says

she is most excited about

“getting to know all of my

students and making a differ-

ence in their lives.”

Lastly, we are delighted to

introduce Maureen Paterson,

our new Marketing Director.

Maureen has been an active

Taste of Fort Mill volunteer for

over three years and will no

directly help the school with

marketing and fundraising

tasks. She has marketing

experience with big brands

including Under Armour and

Head, but is just getting her

feet wet with our sort of non-

profit marketing, so please

make her welcome.

Finally, we are so excited to

let you all know that we have

started construction on our

S.T.E.A.M lab. This is HUGE

news and we will tell you

more about this on page 2,

check it out!

As we said on Page 1, construction has begun on our brand new S.T.E.A.M. LAB. And, we

couldn’t be more excited or proud! Thanks to YOU, generous donors, we are able to add

such amazing hands-on learning facilities at The Palmetto School.

What is a S.T.E.A.M. LAB you ask? Well, in a nutshell, it is “maker space that inspires

integrative learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.” (source

http://www.t4t.org/steam-labs/) One of the best things about S.T.E.A.M. labs is that the

students can be involved in the planning and building of the space and in the process

learn tool safety and organization skills that can be used for life.

The S.T.E.A.M. lab at The Palmetto School is being built behind our school. We have

excavated the large grassy hill that was very close to our cafeteria back door and there

is now space where a 12 X 46’ room will be built. It will include one large classroom to

be used by all 3 different grade level classes and also a new office for Dr. Wilson. (if you

didn’t know, Dr. Wilson has been sharing a 10x10’ office with two other staff members

for the past 6 years!)

The Palmetto School teachers will utilize the new S.T.E.A.M. lab for special projects

falling within the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics arenas and

the staff and students can not wait to get going.

Thank you, for all your generous donations and gifts and for helping The Palmetto

School be able to create such an amazing place for our students to learn and grow. Stay

tuned for updates as the S.T.E.A.M. lab continues to progress!

The School year is off to a great start. We are so excited about

the awesome students and teachers we have at The Palmetto

School. I cannot thank you enough for blessing our school last

year. We had so many wonderful people that supported us this

past year. Big shout out goes to the Springfield Community for

helping put on one of the most amazing events in York County,

The Taste of Fort Mill. The money raised at this event will help

provide a State of the Art STEAM Lab. More information and

pictures will come as soon as construction is complete.

Last year a 3rd grade student came to the school who had

never seen a classroom before in his life and he was perform-

ing well below a kindergarten level. By the end of the year he

was on grade level, learning every day and loving school! This

is what your support brings to our school and children.

The Palmetto School at the Children’s Attention

Home serves children who have been removed

from their home by DSS for reasons of abuse,

abandonment, or neglect, and reside at the on

campus shelter, The Children’s Attention Home.

We also serve children who reside at other local

shelters such as Pilgrim’s Inn, Family Prom-

ise and Safe Passage.

Our students are in kindergarten through 8th

grade. The Palmetto School is a Fine arts school

that integrates the arts to help students improve

learning and heal from their life’s trauma and

situation. Most of our Fine Arts Staff are volun-

teers that have served our school for the past 6

years.

The school also focuses on meeting the basic

needs of the children while providing a solid,

appropriate, individualized academic program.

Utilizing classrooms with low teacher to student

ratios, children are able to spend significant

individual or small group time with the teacher.

Considerable emphasis is placed on teaching

the children the appropriate behavioral skills

needed for them to prosper as students.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, and over

60% of our operating budget comes from

donations. Donations made to our school are

tax deductible.
