Currently accepting donations for the St. Peter’s Altar Society Country Store which is open during the bazaar on November 23, 2019. This flea-market style space relies on your gifts of gently used household wares, books, crafted and re-gifted items and especially baked goods and candies packaged and ready to sell. Donations may be brought to the school the evening of November 22nd beginning at 5:30pm. St Peter’s Altar Society will be selling raffle tickets for the 2019 Quilt raffle this weekend. The tickets are still $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Drawing will be at the Bazaar on November 23rd. Funds raised by the Altar Society are used to help pay for Altar Supplies (host, wine, candles, linens, cleaning, laundry, and funeral luncheons.) Also any special requests by our Pastor, and special projects for the youth group and St. Mary’s Academy.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK November 9th - 17th "Protecting God's Children" St. Peter Confirmation Candidates Retreat: This is a reminder that we will have a retreat for Confirmation Candidates on Saturday, November 16th from 9am-Noon. We will hold the retreat in the St. Peter Parish Hall. SMA and English Speaking St. Peter Sacramental Prep Update: Parents this is a reminder that if your child is preparing to receive sacraments either this year or next year and attends SMA or the St. Peter English and Spanish Speaking Sacramental Prep programs (Confirmation, First Communion Prep Level 1 and Level 2) they need to be attending Mass weekly, either at the Saturday Vigil Mass or one of the two Masses on Sundays as well as other prescribed Holy Days of Obligation and turning in their Mass journal forms. This is part of the requirements to complete their preparation to receive the sacrament. English Speaking RE Homework Night: English Speaking RE Homework Night will be at 6:30pm. Homework Nights are required for all St. Peter students preparing to receive a Sacrament this year. Confirmation Candidates will meet in the Parish Hall and Level 1 & Level 2 First Communion Prep students will meet in the Fireside Room. Students will not be excused for sports practices or games. Spanish Speaking Sacramental Prep Classes: Sunday’s at 10:30am to 11:40am in the Fireside Room. Please pick your child up on time our catechists will be going to 12pm Mass and need time to clean up and get to Mass.

"Proteger a los hijos de Dios" Retiro de candidatos de confirmación de San Pedro: Este es un recordatorio de que vamos a tener un retiro para los candidatos de confirmación el sábado, 16 de noviembre a partir de las 9 am-mediodía. Vamos a hacer el retiro en el Salón parroquial de Pedro. SMA y preparación Sacramental de San Pedro en Ingles y Español: Padres esto es un recordatorio de que si su hijo se está preparando para recibir sacramentos este año o el año que viene y asiste a Sma o al los programas de preparación Sacramental de San Pedro Inglés o Español (confirmación, preparación de primera comunión nivel 1 y nivel 2) tienen que asistir a misa cada fin de Semana, ya que sea en la misa de vigilia del sábado o en una de las dos misas los domingo, así como otras Días de obligación y entregar de sus formas de diario o tarjeta. Esto es parte de los requisitos para completar su preparación para recibir el sacramento. Noche de tarea educación religiosa : Noche de Tarea comenzará a las 6:30 pm. Se requieren Noches de Tarea para todos los estudiantes de San Pedro que se preparan para recibir un Sacramento este año. This prayer was chosen to remind us of our Veterans. We thank our Vet’s for their dedication and unselfishness. We are proud to honor and support our veterans. St. Mary’s Academy will be in school on Veteran’s day to attend the parade and show those that served our support. Many times our students do not get the opportunity to show their appreciation for those that have served so we honor them this Veterans Day. Get ready for the Fall Book Fair. Our annual fall book fair will open on Tuesday the 19th and runs through November the 26th. This is a great place to get Christmas presents. Don’t have time during the day? Come feed the family at the STEAM Fair with a bowl of soup as you tour the science fair experiments, technology, engineering, art, math and class work throughout the building on Tuesday the 19th at 5:30.

From the Pastor’s Desk – Fr. Levine- Last Sunday I brought my considerations of the Lord’s Day to a conclusion by noting that Sunday observance is not just a religious issue, but a social justice issue, indeed the key issue for true social jus-tice. I wrote: “Social justice means nothing if it does not involve the right order of society; if social justice is reduced to merely economic issues (or environmental issues) it completely misses the larger question of the right order of society. A rightly or-dered society would put the observance of Sunday first and the good of the family second, while all work, production, and economic matters would be subordinated to these two human goods.” In the weeks to come, I hope to pursue this line of thinking. This will mean considering the social teaching of the Church in a way that has scarcely been followed since Pope Leo XIII’s foundation social encyclical “Rerum Novarum”, written in 1891. First, though, it is important to note how badly the social teaching of the Church has been received, even by Catholics. For example, in Pope Francis encyclical “Laudato Si” the most important part, which really governs everything else, is his presentation of the theology of creation. People don’t care much about theology; we are very practically minded. So the re-sult has been that the theology of creation is ignored and the value of the encyclical is judged by the Pope’s stance on things like climate change and the practical course of action that he suggests. In other words, the small part of the encyclical in which the Pope actually speaks within the scope of his papal teaching authority, is ignored, whereas the larger part of the encyclical, in which the Pope’s voice is only one opinion among many, gets the attention. So also, with Leo XIII’s “Rerum Novarum” many people might think of that encyclical in terms of his approval of labor unions. Few paid much attention what he thought labor unions should be like. Still, when Pope Leo XIII was writing in 1891 the modern process of secularization (which will necessarily involve eliminating the Lord’s Day from the public life of nations) had already begun, but it was still possible for the Pope to call people to return to the Christian foundations of society. This means that the Pope is able to write more simply and directly about how things should be. In recent decades, Catholic social teaching has been framed in the context of radically pluralistic societies and a radically plu-ralistic world. This have forced the Church to frame her teaching in the context of that pluralism. This has often had the un-fortunate consequence (precisely because people look to the practical programs, not the underlying principles) that people begin to regard pluralism as the way things should be, as the social ideal. If we really think about what pluralism means then we will see that it is truly an evil to be tolerated, not an ideal to be pro-claimed. It must be tolerated because it cannot successfully be overcome by force. Nevertheless pluralism is an evil, because in the end pluralism simply means that different people have radically different underlying views of God, man, the meaning of human life, and about right and wrong. Yes, there are common elements in these different views, but those common elements take on very different meanings precisely because they are set in very different contexts. For example the negative form of the golden rule (“Do not to others what you would not have them do to you”) is quite uni-versal, but is also quite vague. The so-called ‘second table’ of the ten commandments, those that deal with our relations with other human beings, are also fairly universal – at least before the 20th century. Everyone accepts, “Thou shalt not kill”, in some form or another. Nevertheless, the precise meaning and scope of the com-mandment very much depends on the underlying view of human life, which in turn depends on the underlying ‘worldview’. This will in turn have an impact on how people view matters like war, capital punishment, and self-defense. The debates in these matters bear witness to underlying world views that in our practically minded world are rarely examined or discussed. Pluralism then does not unite people but sets them in conflict. The life of a pluralistic community revolves around the ques-tion of how to manage these inevitable conflicts. That is challenge enough when it is a matter of a pluralism of groups such as Christians, Muslims, and Jews in the Crusader Kingdoms of the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. What we have today, however, might be called the hyper-pluralism of individ-uals. Even when individuals combine in larger groups, those are viewed, finally, as purely voluntary associations. In theory, at least, people are free to come and go as they please. Which means that even in religious groups the unity of worldview is more a matter of coincidence of worldviews, rather than true unity. In other words, we are together because we happen to think alike, not because there is anything real that actually unites us. That we might say is the ‘worldview’ of pluralism. The attempt to set forth the social teaching of the Church in this context is subject to immense challenges and readily leads to major distortions. That makes it worthwhile going back to look at the principles and order of an encyclical like “Rerum Novarum” that was written before vast civilizational destruction that took place in World War I. The Quotable Pope Francis- "Violence and the rejection of life; where do they actually come from? From fear. Indeed, welcoming others is a challenge to individualism. Let us think, for example, about when it is discovered that a new life has a disability, even a serious one. In these tragic cases, parents need true closeness, true solidarity to face the reality and overcome the understandable fears. However, they often receive hasty advice to interrupt the pregnancy, which is an expression: ‘interrupting the pregnancy’ means ‘doing away with someone’, directly." Desde el Escritorio del párroco El Padre José – El domingo pasado concluí mis consideraciones sobre el Día del Señor al señalar que la observancia del domingo no es solo una cuestión religiosa, sino una cuestión de justicia social, de hecho, la cuestión clave para la verdadera justicia social.
