The DCS is the US's newest in telligence agency. The others being? The CIA, of course … Of course … the Secret Service, the FBI, the DEA, t he National Security Agency, the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, th e Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, the Bureau of Intellige nce and Research, the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Coa st Guard Intelligence, the National Reconnaissance Office, the National Ge ospatial Intelligence Agency … That's one hell of a lot of spies. It's barely the tip of the iceberg. One might almost think the US government was addicted t o phone-tapping, bin-rummaging and waterboarding. Hm. What's the story behind this latest addition? Wieder gaben Sie ihnen mehrere Wört er in unterschiedlichen Sprachen zu lesen, darunter auch das Wort красный. Das ist Russisch und heißt Rot. Schreibt man es in blauen oder grünen Bu chstaben, wird jeder Amerikaner (der kein Russisch kann), kein Problem d amit haben, in dem Fall einfach die Farbe laut auszusprechen. Unter dem Str ess, als Spion enttarnt zu werden, dem entsprechenden Zeitdruck mehrere sol cher Farbwörter laut aufzusagen und vor dem Hintergrund eigentlich Russe mit eben dieser Muttersprache zu sein, sagten die Agenten an der St elle eben nicht “Blau” oder “Grün” – sondern “Rot”. (b) Of these, 1,676 included requests for authority for perform electronic surveillance, the report said. That compares to 1,579 such applications in 2010 (i ncluding 1,511 for electronic surveillance).

(uni-graz) Sicherheit im Öffentlichen Raum - VertreterInnen aus Politik und Wissenschaft diskutierten über die Mitverantwortung der BürgerInnen Gibt es eine Mitverantwortung der BürgerInnen für die Sicherheit im öffentlichen Raum? Diese Frage stand im Mittelpunkt einer Podiumsdiskussion, die den Auftakt zur Tagung des Austrian Center for Intelligence,

Propaganda & Security Studies (ACIPSS) und des Cent re for Military Studies (CMS) am 27. April 2012 im Resowi-Zentrum bildete. Grazer Gemeinde- und StadtradtspolitikerInnen diskutierten mit Vertreter Innen der Sicherheitsbehörden und des ACIPSS sowie mit Schüle rInnen der Graz International Bilingual School (GIBS). In den USA wird BürgerInnenbeteiligung beim Thema S icherheit seit Jahren forciert, so etwa mit der Kampagne „If you see some thing, say something“ in der U-Bahn. Hierzulande ist diese Form der Selbstve rantwortung in den Köpfen noch kaum präsent. Doch die Zeiten, in denen sich der Staat um alle gekümmert hat, seien vorbei, betonte ACIPSS-Leiter Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Siegfried Beer in seiner Einführung. Der Historiker fordert mehr Eigeninitiative. Denn: „Was in Toulouse passiert is t, kann auch in Graz passieren“, mahnt Beer. Vizerektor Martin Polaschek, der die Veranstaltung eröffnete, dankte den OrganisatorInnen und begrüßte die Wahl dieses brisa nten Themas für die Podiumsdiskussion: „Es ist gut, diese Fragen hier a n der Universität zu diskutieren, fernab von medialen Überlegungen, und die Meinung der Wissenschaft einzuholen.“ Zugleich verwies Polasche k auf die Bedeutung des Themas für die Universität als eine der größten öff entlichen Flächen in Graz, die täglich von tausenden jungen Leuten frequ entiert werde. Am Nachmittag standen Vorträge aus Forschungsbereic hen des ACIPSS sowie des CMS unter der Leitung von Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c .mult. Harald Heppner auf dem Programm.

We invite academics, graduate students and military personnel to propose papers and panels on subjects dealing with Baltic region milit ary history--from the ancient times to recent conflicts. The Conference will examine Baltic Region military history in the broadest sense—from analyzing battles and campaigns to discu ssing the social and economic impact of conflicts. We are interested in having papers and panels On su bjects such as Operational Art in Baltic Campaigns, the Baltics in the era of the Crusades, the Swedish/Russian conflicts, the Napole onic Wars, the Military and Society in the time of the Tsars, The Baltic Ca mpaigns of World War I, the Independence Wars 1918-1921, the Soviet /Finnis h Wars, war plans and preparations in the region, Baltic conflict as port rayed in films and books, military activities in the region in the 19t h and 20th centuries.
