14. ACIMAC - Financial Statement Analysis
INTRODUCTION
This report describes a complete method for evaluating the performance of a sample of world brick and tile manufacturers and for per-forming business model benchmarking. It is the first part of a broader suite of data anal-ysis tools provided by the ACIMAC Research Department (the others are the international sales trends and benchmarking analyses on specific data provided by individual compa-nies). It is the first informative publication specifically devoted to manufacturers in this sector and aims to provide entrepreneurs, managers of Italian and non-Italian companies, scholars and sector analysts with a tool to help them gain greater understanding of the main characteristics and trends in the sector and its key players. It is also a powerful integrated tool containing organised data that will help entrepreneurs and managers draw up the best manufacturing and commercial strategies at a company or group level. It will enable readers to evaluate the economic performance of, and similarities between, sec-tor companies in Italy and in other countries or groups of countries where brick and tile manu-facturers have a significant presence.
The rest of the Report is organised as follows:
PART ONE serves as an introduction and con-sists of three separate sections.• The first section briefly discusses the method-
ological and statistical aspects of the survey.• The second section provides an initial analy-
sis of the results on a geographical basis. At this stage the analysis is performed by
grouping companies together by individual countries (if the number of companies is suf-ficiently large) or by larger geographical re-gions if the number of companies is too small (EU Europe, Other Countries).
This section examines the incidence of costs and profit margins at all levels of operation and the relevant trends, comparing the last few years of financial statement data and calculating the relevant variations. The main geographical regions are then compared and commented on.

1. struttura ed evoluzione recente dei risultati economico-finanziari delle diverse aree ge-stionali (es. Produzione, suoi costi e ciclo delle scorte; gestione del personale; gestio-ne finanziaria; gestione dell’attivo immobi-lizzato, ecc.);
incluse le sue implicazioni in termini di one-rosità e di grado di utilizzo degli impianti, di decisione aziendale sul confine tra make e buy (che a sua volta determina, come ri-sultato, il grado di integrazione verticale dell’impresa);
5. altri margini di profittabilità a diversi livelli nel-la catena di creazione del valore dell’impresa;
PART TWO analyses the individual companies, each of which is examined and compared with the reference groups described in Part One. In this section the companies are analysed through a standard index-based financial statement analysis using balance sheet and in-come statement data. In particular it focuses on the following:
1. structure and recent trends in the economic and financial results of the various manage-ment areas (e.g. production, its costs and the inventory cycle; personnel management; financial management; asset management, etc.);
2. structure of debt and equity capital; 3. main financial indices and economic ratios; 4. the added value creation process, including
its implications in terms of costs and plant capacity utilisation and make-or-buy trade-off corporate decisions (which in turn deter-mine the company’s degree of vertical inte-gration);
5. other profitability margins at various levels in the company’s chain of value;
6. alert and financial vulnerability indices; 7. ratings (from various sources) of individual
companies, each placed within the context of sector averages;
In PART THREE the world heavy clay manufac-turers are further classified according to a mul-tidimensional ranking based on a system of 15 indicators (11 financial statement ratios, 2 com-pany size indicators and 2 rating company syn-thetic indicators). TThis will enable readers to make a direct com-parison between a company’s results and those of its competitors.For these indicators the average three-year val-ue was used in order to provide more structural or medium-term information than would be pos-sible with values referring only to the last year. This enables us to provide more stable and ac-curate rankings for each individual company. The criteria adopted for construction of the mul-tidimensional ranking proposed by Acimac gave preference to the choice of 4 synthetic in-dices for company profitability (ROI, ROE, ROS

all’indicazione ottenibile con valori riferiti all’ul-timo anno.

and ROA), 4 indices for economic/productive and management efficiency (ADDED VALUE/Sales, EBITDA/Sales, EBIT/Sales and PROF-IT-LOSS/Sales) and 3 indices for structure and financial strength (CASH FLOW/Turnover, EQ-UITY Ratio and Gearing). Although not directly related to economic per-formance, the dimensional indicators of operat-ing turnover and number of employees were al-so included in the multidimensional ranking. The companies were first ranked on the basis of an one-dimensional index that takes account of the company’s ranking for each chosen indica-tor. The final ranking was then calculated as the average of the rankings obtained for each of the 15 chosen indicators. It should be noted that the chosen indicators im-plicitly assign greater weight to the profitability and efficiency of management processes than to financial strength and equity structure.
