Hanne T. Fisker
Hanne T. Fisker is a young Danish Photographer, who has made Ireland her home since 2011. Her background is in sports and academia, however in 2008 she gave away her belongings, packed a suitcase and left Denmark, entering a nomadic existence and at some point along the way, picked up a camera. Deeply moved and inspired by nature all around her, and with a keen observant eye, Hanne developed and honed her skills as a photographer, whether gazing over vast untamed oceans, or mesmerised by a raindrop in a spider web and even through her rare encounters with feral creatures, she has managed to capture snippets of the natural world, as she sees and senses it. Her first solo exhibition “Storm and Still” in 2015 was followed two years later by “Water Stories”. Nowadays photographs are increasingly significant in the world’s major art institutions, such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate. Creating images that are unique, powerful and evocative, Hanna T. Fisker is an emerging artist of substance, who has managed, through the realm of photography, to develop her work as a serious and significant Art Form.

Arthur K Maderson
Irish by inclination, Arthur Maderson was actually born in London in 1942, and studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London, winning the Anna Berry Award in 1963, in open competition with leading Art Schools. Although Maderson continued to paint on a regular basis, it was only in 1982, at the age of 40 that he felt sufficiently confident to exhibit. From this period, he has enjoyed considerable success, and this success has been replicated in Ireland, where his reputation as a painter of distinction and passion is firmly established. He works at a frantic pace with dedication, determination and unflagging vigour, and now divides his time between Ireland and a small hamlet high in a largely unpopulated mountainous region of the Cevenne, in the South of France. As to this transition from Ireland to France, Maderson observes ‘It is curious to move from a world of low key, soft tertiary colours, borne of high levels of atmospheric moisture, to fiercely aggressive sunlight, cutting and dividing forms, into intense stabs of brilliant, heavily saturated colours … delicate salmon against bursts of intense electric blues … a world which takes on the appearance of having been formed by crushing jewels … what a challenge, to paint with crushed jewels!’ Arthur Maderson has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy and he has represented Ireland in many prestigious exhibitions. Maderson’s subtle exploration of a rich kaleidoscope of ‘raw’ visual information is achieved with a fierce determination, all part of his artistic genius. An outstanding artist of his generation.

Born in 1963, Carina Scott is both artist and musician, and all the while a breeder of quality Irish sport horses. With a strong musical background, Carina, as an artist & painter, is largely self taught and her pedigree as a creative artist mirrors her success with her horses and Connemara ponies at the RDS and French Championships. Painting in both Ireland and France, her adopted country, Carina Scott is continually inspired by the landscape & light, by the seasons and the sensuality of nature all around her. Her work is distinctive and vibrant, an Irish palette, influenced by the strong light and colour of southern Europe. With her bold use of paint, Scott captures the light and mood of the Irish landscape and of the creatures she portrays. Her use of paint and her palette knife work are exquisite, testament to the flair, vigour and enthusiasm with which she constantly works. Her reputation as an artist has grown steadily, with successful shows in Ireland and abroad and the success she has enjoyed is well deserved.

Charles Lamb RHA RUACharles Lamb was one of a group of Irish Artist’s who, during the 1920’s and 30’s found inspiration in the life and landscape of the West of Ireland. Born in Co Armagh in 1893, Charles Vincent Lamb was the eldest of seven children, who in 1913 had won a gold medal as best apprentice house painter of the year and in 1917 he won a scholarship to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where he studied for four years and came under the influence of Sean Keating. At this time, he became profoundly affected by the nationalist movement which dominated Dublin intellectual and artistic circles of the day. As such, he looked to the West of Ireland and to the people and traditions of the Gaeltacht, visiting Carraroe for the first time in 1921 and regularly in the years that followed. In these early years, Lamb had met Padraic O’Conaire from Connemara, who encouraged him to go West and paint the unspoilt landscape and life of the people, in the Carraroe area in particular, a remote Irish-speaking area, at that time. In 1919, Charles Lamb had four works selected for the Royal Hibernian Academy and he continued to exhibit there for the rest of his life. Annual one man shows in Dublin followed and in 1923 he was appointed an associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and by 1924 he was exhibiting at the Magee Gallery in Belfast. In 1926 and 1927, he toured Brittany, painting peasant life in a manner derived from his experience in the West of Ireland. The following year, he was back in the West of Ireland, travelling around in a horse-drawn caravan. An exhibition in Boston USA followed in 1928 and in 1929 and 1930 in New York. Until the mid 1930’s he continued to produce important figure studies, there after he concentrated on landscapes, being elected a full member of the RHA in 1938. Through the 1930’s, he exhibited work in Dublin, London and Brussels and as far afield as Los Angeles in 1932, at the Olympic Art Exhibition and in 1933, at the Chicago World Fair. Lamb had a house built of local stone in Carraroe in 1935, where he settled and started a Summer School, while continuing his summer exhibitions. He was also elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy and in 1938, he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. His work was included in the Contemporary Irish Painting exhibition to North America in 1950. As well as exhibiting at the Oireachtas exhibition in Dublin, he showed at the Munster Fine Art Club and was a member of the United Arts Club in Dublin. He continued to paint right up the end of his days and died in Carraroe in 1964. A number of summer exhibitions were held in the Carraroe studio in the years that followed and a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in 1969. It is thought that this work ‘Carraroe, Connemara’, was exhibited in the 1969 exhibition in Dublin under the title ‘Western Scene’. His work is included in many and varied important collections, including the Crawford Gallery, Cork, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, and the National Gallery of Ireland, together with municipal and university collections across Ireland.
May Manning Mary Ruth (May) Manning was born in Dublin in 1853, the daughter of engineer Robert Manning. Apart from a period of time living in Hampstead, London from 1889 to 1892, May lived in the family home at Ely Place from 1880. Neither May nor her sisters married, living in Ely Place until after their father’s death, and then on Winton Road, Lesson Park. She died there on 27 January 1930. Mary Manning had two daughters, Susan and Fanny, who both became American poets. Manning studied in Paris in the 1870s with Louise Catherine Breslau and Sarah Purser. She worked primarily in oil and watercolour. From 1880 to 1892, her work was exhibited by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Walker Art Gallery, the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), and in Brussels. Manning is best known for her influence on a number of Irish women artists of the time. She and sisters held art lessons from a studio for young women, many of whom she encouraged to study in Paris. Amongst the artists she taught and influenced are Mary Swanzy and Mainie Jellett. Her teaching took up most of her time, which led to her exhibiting her own work infrequently. Manning became a member of the Dublin Sketching Club in 1885. An oil painting of a landscape and setting sun by Manning is on display in the National Gallery of Ireland, whilst her Study of a boy is in the collections of the Hugh Lane Gallery.

Sean Keating1889 - 1978
Born in Limerick, Sean Keating studied drawing at Limerick Technical School and won a scholarship in 1911 to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, where he studied under Sir William Orpen. In 1914 he won the Taylor scholarship and went to visit the Aran Islands with his friend Harry Clarke. It was a turning point in his career as the islands and their inhabitants, were to become the subjects of so many of his paintings and drawings. In 1915 he succeeded in showing three of his paintings at the RHA and was elected an associate in 1919 and a full member in 1923. In 1919 he also began to teach at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. He was represented at the Royal Academy in 1924, continuing to exhibit there for the next thirty years and he represented Ireland at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. At home, Keating exhibited in the important exhibitions of his day, including the Victor Waddington Gallery in Dublin, the Hendriks Gallery, the Oireachtas, etc. and had a successful one-man show in the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery on St Stephen’s Green in December 1956. He resigned from the presidency of the RHA in 1962 and the following year a retrospective exhibition was held at the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, opened by President De Valera. As an artist and a teacher he always took a firm stand on the side of traditional painting and was outspoken in his rejection of the modern movement.
This important work in pastel & charcoal, Fear Agus Bean Ón Oilean, is most striking and distinctive, presenting two powerful characters, with strong facial expressions and gestures and is typical of Keating’s style and genius. A strong and thought-provoking work, it portrays life in the West of Ireland, that Keating cherished. Interested in symbolic themes, he frequently portrayed individual characters with strong lines and attention to detail. Much of his work is associated with the period of the foundation of the State and he is widely regarded as one of the most significant Irish artists of the 20th century.

Carina Scott

Michael Morris
Born in Dublin in 1979, Michael Morris is a self taught painter whose travels have helped in honing a unique style that is individual and immediately recognizable. Following his own path, he gained a clear perspective on what he wanted to create. His travels took him through France, Rome, Venice and Spain, and while Ireland remains his main subject matter, his work has a vibrancy, which seems to be suffused with both French flair and Mediterranean light. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland, including the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition. It is little surprise that his work has been received to critical acclaim, he is clearly an emerging artist of substance.

Mildred Anne Butler RWS Born in 1858, Mildred Anne Butler lived most of her life at the family home, Kilmurry House, near Thomastown, Co Kilkenny. Indeed, Kilmurry was the inspiration for much of her work throughout her career, and its animals, birds and walled flower garden feature in much of her work. In 1885, she visited France, Switzerland and Italy sketching as she travelled and in 1886, studied under Paul Jacob Naftel in London. The Dudley Gallery in London showed her work in 1888 and she began to exhibit with the Watercolour Society of Ireland in 1892. In 1893, her work was included in the book of watercolours given by the Society of Lady Artists to Princess May, later Queen Mary, and Mildred Anne Butler later painted a tiny picture of crows for the Queeen’s dolls house at Windsor. She was regularly represented at the Watercolour Society of Ireland exhibitions and contributed more than 200 works. She exhibited widely including the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1891, and the Belfast Art Society. She was in Paris in 1894, and later travelled with May Guinness to study under Norman Garstin at Newlyn in 1894 and 1895. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1896, and in 1897, Lady Cadogan, the Vicereine in Dublin, presented one of her watercolours to the Princess of Wales. Mildred Anne Butler continued to travel regularly in Ireland and abroad, and in 1907, she exhibited at the new Dudley Gallery in London with Percy French, Claude Hayes and Bingham McGuinness. She continued to exhibit widely and lived out her final years at Kilmurry, where she died in 1941. In 1978, much of her private collection came to light on the dispersal of Kilmurry’s contents and this collection became an important touring exhibition, which was sold in Christies in London and at subsequent Christies sales in Belfast and Dublin. Many fine examples of her work are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and the Ulster Museum.

1. DefinitionsIn these Conditions, West of Ireland Art Auctions Limited, trading as Dolan’s Art Auction House, who act as auctioneers and agents for the vendor, are called ‘The Auctioneers’ (which expression shall be deemed to include their servants and agents) and the representative of Dolan’s Art Auction House conducting the auction is called ‘The Auctioneer’. As auctioneers, Dolan’s act as agent for the seller. A sale contract is made directly between the seller and the buyer. However, Dolan’s may own a lot (and in such circumstances act in a principal capacity as seller) and/or may have a legal, beneficial or financial interest in a lot.2. Third Party LiabilityEvery person at or on the ‘Auctioneers’ premises or at any premises being used by the Auctioneer at any time shall be deemed to be there entirely at his/her own risk and shall have no claim whatsoever against the Auctioneers or their servants or agents in respect of any accident or incident which may occur, nor any injury, damage or loss howsoever arising and whether or not same is the subject of any allegation of negligence.3. GeneralWhilst the Auctioneers make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of every lot:a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots is sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of description.b) The auctioneer shall not be responsible for any discrepancies between the colour in the catalogue illustration and that of the original work being offered for sale.c) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within three months of the sale.d) The Auctioneers shall not be liable for consequential or resultant loss or damage whether sustained by a Vendor or a Purchaser or the owner of any item or their respective servants and agents arising in any circumstances whatsoever and irrespective of any claim made by any party as to negligence or lack of care of the Auctioneers or any party acting on their behalf.e) All lots are made available for inspection for a reasonable period prior to auction. A buyer who makes a bid for any lot thereby acknowledges that he has satisfied himself as to the physical condition, state of repair or restoration, age and catalogue description of such lot and also that he accepts these conditions of sale.Dolan’s knowledge, in relation to each lot, is partially dependent on information provided by the seller and Dolan’s are not able to, and do not, carry out exhaustive due diligence searches on each lot. Bidders acknowledge this fact and accept responsibility for carrying out inspections and investigations to satisfy themselves as to the lots they may be interested in buying. Bidders also acknowledge the fact that many lots are of an age that they may not be in perfect condition. All lots are offered for sale with any imperfections. Catalogue descriptions and condition reports may on occasions make reference to particular imperfections of a lot, but Bidders should note that lots may have other faults not expressly referred to in the catalogue or condition report. Illustrations are for identification purposes only and will not convey full information as to the actual condition of lots.4. The Auctiona) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or previous notice. He may bid on behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at the Auctioneer’s discretion.b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen, he has absolute discretion to settle it or to re-offer the lot for sale. The
Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance or bidding or refuse a bid.c) Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor. Whether or not there is a reserve price the seller has the right to bid either personally or by any other person (who may be the Auctioneer).d) All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot.5. RescindmentNotwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within 12 months after the sale, the Auctioneers have received from the buyer any notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty one days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies the Auctioneers that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the sale refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter shall be settled by the President of the Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the Republic of Ireland. Both the buyer and the vendor agree to be bound by the decision.6. DefaultThe Auctioneers disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the vendor because they act as Agents for the vendor only and therefore do not pay out to the vendor until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the vendor and the buyer agree to be bound by these conditions and any other special conditions of sale.7. Retention of TitleAll goods remain the property of the vendor until paid for in full. The Auctioneers will not assume liability to discharge net proceeds arising from the sale of goods until those goods have been paid for in full.8. InstructionsAll goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction and will be catalogued and sold at the discretion of the Auctioneer and accepted by them subject to all the Sale Conditions. By delivering the goods to the Auctioneers for inclusion in their auction sales the vendor acknowledges that he or she has accepted and agreed to be bound by all these Conditions.9. Collection and DeliveriesThe Auctioneers do not normally undertake the packing, collection or delivery of goods but will if requested use their best endeavours as Agent of the Owner to arrange for an independent contractor on the owner’s behalf to deal with packing, collection and/or delivery. The Auctioneer will not in any event arrange insurance of the goods and will accordingly not be liable for any loss or damage to goods howsoever arising including breakages or for any damage to premises, fixtures or fittings therein caused by such contractor or otherwise and the owner is responsive for all arrangements to verify that any such contractor and the goods is/are appropriately insured. Unless instructions are received to the contrary, charges (including VAT) for such services will be charged to the vendor’s account or discharged through the Auctioneers by the purchaser as the case may be. The Auctioneers’ liability (if any) will arise only where they themselves carry out packing and collection/delivery and only in the case of breakage or loss caused through deliberate negligence of their employees and in any event in one single contract and the Auctioneers’ liability will not exceed C=500. Provided further the Auctioneers will not be liable for consequential loss in any circumstances whatsoever.10. Loss or Damage and StorageThe Auctioneers reserve the right to store or arrange for the storage of goods held by them or delivered
to them either on their own premises or elsewhere at their sole discretion and entirely at the owner’s risk. The Auctioneers shall not be liable for any loss (including consequential loss) howsoever caused or damage to goods of any kind including breakages, or for unauthorised removal of goods. 11. Right to Re-sellThe Auctioneer reserves the right to re-sell any item that has not been collected within fourteen days.12. Telephone biddingEvery effort will be made to facilitate persons wishing to bid by telephone at auction but the auctioneer disclaims responsibility for any failures for whatever reason, in this regard.13. Absentee BiddingEvery effort will be made to facilitate persons wishing to leave commission bids with the auctioneer but the auctioneer disclaims responsibility for any failures for whatever reason, in this regard.14. Droit de SuiteThe artist’s resale levy, the droit de suite, where applicable, will be deemed to be the responsibility of the vendor. Dolan’s Art Auction House will not charge this levy to the purchaser. The vendor by entering his goods for sale with Dolan’s Art Auction House acknowledges that he/she is responsible for the payment of this artist’s resale levy. Dolan’s Art Auction House will not be responsible for payment of the droit de suite and the vendor by entering his/her goods for sale acknowledges that he/she has accepted and agreed to be bound by this condition of sale. Furthermore Dolan’s Art Auction House accepts goods for sale from the vendor on the condition that the vendor authorizes Dolan’s Art Auction House to withhold monies due for payment of the droit de suite from the auction proceeds due to the vendor, and the vendor further authorizes Dolan’s Art Auction House to pay the droit de suite, on the vendors behalf, to the artist. Furthermore the vendor acknowledges that the droit de suite payment where applicable will be charged to the vendors account in addition to the vendors commission charged by the auctioneer and any illustration or other charges applicable to the account.15. Special ConditionsPURCHASER:a) The purchaser shall pay a commission to the auctioneer, viz. a Buyer’s Premium, of 25% including VAT on the hammer price of each lot.b) The Purchaser acknowledges that the auctioneer may also receive a commission from the vendor.c) All accounts must be discharged by certified cheque, bank draft or cash. The auctioneer reserves the right not to release goods until cheque payments have been cleared by the bank. Debit & Credit cards are also accepted. d) Responsibility for items purchased passes to the purchaser on the fall of the hammer. The Auctioneers reserve the right to look for a 25% deposit on all goods.e) The buyer authorises the Auctioneer to use any photographs, drawings or illustrations of any lot purchased by the buyer, and, to indicate the price paid at auction for the lot, and the buyer acknowledges that same may be used for any advertising, promotional or other such purposes.16. Purchasers will NOT be charged the Artists
Resale Levy.17. VAT Regulations:All lots are sold within the Auctioneers VAT margin scheme. Revenue regulations require that the buyers premium must be invoiced at a rate which is inclusive of VAT. This VAT is NOT recoverable by any VAT registered buyers.18. Special Notice To PurchaserProspective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory and tortoiseshell. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding , if they intend to import such items into another country.
