he Academic Students Achieving and Reaching for Success (STARS) program is designed for newly en- rolled Kent State University freshmen who are African-American, Latino or Native American. The program helps to prepare students for their college experience with opportunities to build a solid academic foundation, achieve excellence in education and develop leadership qualities. When does the program take place? Summer Institute June 9 – July 12, 2013 Academic STARS begins with a five-week summer institute where you will take two courses and earn 6 college credit hours that count toward graduation. You’ll learn skills to be successful in college, such as time management, taking notes, reading and studying, taking tests, listening, setting goals and making decisions. You will also be introduced to a wide range of helpful campus resources. Participation is by invitation only. Expenses for students who are selected to participate are paid by the Student Multicultural Center. You will move into a residence hall on June 9 and will live on campus for the entire five weeks. Current Kent State students serve as peer mentors in the residence halls during the summer institute. The institute includes a multicultural component that promotes recognition, understanding and appreciation of cultural differences through courses on College Writing and Interpreting the Black Experience. How do I apply?To apply for Academic STARS, please take the following steps:

• Complete and return the Academic STARS application.

• Submit your original high school transcript and a one-page

essay as indicated on the application.

• Have three people submit recommendation forms for you. Recommendations

can come from teachers, counselors or administrators at your high school.

• By April 5, 2013, schedule an in-person interview by calling 330-672-8563.

Interviews take place on April 20. Your interview will include a presentation

by faculty, parents and former Academic STARS students, along with team-

building activities. A parent/legal guardian must attend the interview.

• Once you’re accepted into Academic STARS, you must participate in all

program activities throughout your freshman year, have no disciplinary actions

and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

What happens when the summer session ends?Ongoing Support

Academic STARS support continues throughout

your freshman year at Kent State. Services that

are available include academic advising, coun-

seling and leadership development.

Who attends?Requirements:

Each year 25 students are selected to

participate in Academic STARS. To be

considered, you must be admitted to Kent

State and attending the Kent Campus. You

must have a 2.5 high school grade point

average, composite writing score of at

least a 17 (ACT)/ 430 (SAT) and no

post-secondary credit for college writing.
