    SPECIAL FEATURES

  • T his week the sound of Torah in the Achdus Beis Medrash resounded from wall to wall. The older bunks are deeply into Perek Shlosha

sheachlu and the the momentum is only build-ing. As the campers toil on the gemara with their charusos and rabbeim they are working hard to gain a clear understanding of the sugyos regarding making a zimun. This week the chavrusa shafts span from mem vuv to mem

zayin and are learning about how far birchas hazimun goes, whether zimun is doraysa or dra-banan, who gets the honor of sit-

ting first and washing first (is washing first real-ly an honor?), when to give kavod and when not to, if a guest can eat before the baal habayis, when to answer amen and when not to, how could it be that we bencsh zimun on dmai, and whats the chiddush that we bensch with a zimun on maser rishon shenitla terumaso. With Rabbi Michelsohns Gemara Point System in place, as the campers learn the Gemara, they are tested by their chavrusos in order to earn points. The Top Ten scorers, along with their points, are hung prominently on the wall. The younger bunks are davening and learning beau-tifully. A special yasher koach to bunks Daled Gadol and Kattan, who have been davening so nicely even though they have had to switch learning rebbeim. The sweet sound of the tino-kos shel bais rabun of bunks Alef and Ches davening and learning Chumash has been bring-ing Mashiach closer and closer!

The Beis Medrash AKIVA LOGUE uneventful until we get

to the narrow gravel road. Somehow, some-way, the big yellow Out-law Mobile must trav-erse these muddy pot-holes and transport the Achdus children to their little wooden cabin and plastic port-a-potty. As it turns out, Brandon the Outlaw has abso-lutely no problem navi-gating those hills and alleys. His performance is absolutely breathtak-ing!

The children of Unison (Achdus) imme-diately begin to set up their tents. Once again Moshe Goldman has brought the biggest tent of all! You can huff and puff and never blow that thing down. He is able to fit 412.5 bunk Suf kids in there. Which is good because the first digit is the actual amount of bunk Sof kids we have this week. Wood is collected and the fire is built. Mincha is prayed and hot dogs are cooked. And then its time for the fire. Oh yes the fire. Its so big

the Lone Ranger would be impressed. A special treat is the attendance of the Rabbi G. Gold-stein family including Avraham. We danced and sang the night away to the rhythm of Yehu-da 10&baums guitar. The franks were deli-

cious thanks to Shloimy Gorin and Mordechai Phelps! The Smores were also ex-tremely edible. Smores will now become an official staple added to the Pollack Supper menu. Maariv followed and then it was off to Capture the Flag! Bran-don Outlaw was abso-lutely unstoppable! The pitch black field mile from the campsite was scary and dark. The campers were thrown in jail and the flags were

captured. A truly be-coming Sport for a be-loved camp. There was one purple heart given out during the game. Shloimy Gorin took one for the team when he twisted his ankle while trying to steal the flag. Rabbi Goldstein also

gets an award for trans-porting the wounded Gorin to the Campsite from the Capture the Flag Field.

    Tuesday

Its a beautiful morn-ing and boys at the overnight must wake up extremely early! 8:30 am. It is Rosh Chodesh, and, although they are stranded in middle of nowhere, they manage to find a Chabad house

  • only 20 minutes away where they daven kidebai! Thank you, Yehuda Kremansky, for leining, and Yehuda 10&baum and Chaim Yona Nulman for leading the be-ginning-of-the-month pray-ers. They return to the campsite where they pack their tents and things and make their way to boating! Moshe Goldman, Hillel Friedman, Dovi Ellman, Chaim Yona Nulman and Shlomo Starkman found a very unique flower floating in the French waters. That was their excitement for the day.

Back at camp, the Junior Division of Camp Achdus was having a blast. They davened, learned, and fought the evil forces of the Yetzer Hara! And that was all be-fore 10:30 am. Sports were sporty and fun! After lunch we played The Brothers Game! Brother and Brother had to somehow get along! Yisroel Oshinsky was asked if he was nice to his brother. Yoni Galen was asked if he jumps out of bed or hits the snooze button. Moshe was asked who Yossi Gabbais best friend was. It was a cra-zy game but the truth has vanquished its evil twin!

    Wednesday

Today is the day! Yes! The younger division of Camp Achdus finally gets their overnight. Well, its more of an Overday. Never-theless, the children bring their sleeping bags, pajama, insect repellant and smiling

faces. After davening and learning, they enter a darkened Kfiratorium where a makeshift fire was set up (actually it was four wooden bent-ches lined up together.) An extremely scary story was told about an old man and his one-legged dance. Oh, was it scary (not). The chil-dren then joined in a Smores fest. UMMMMM. Then it was time for the real fire. Adam the Shadow (knows) built a fire out of cardboard boxes. The bad news is that it was a fake fire as well. The good news is that if Mrs. Lipsky doesnt come one day, we have a new replacement.

During this propitious time, the older bunks became very jealous. They wanted an over-day, too. True, they had two overnights but nothing compares to an overday. As a concilia-tion prize, they were given an activity to write Yearbook articles. Articles like: If I had a penny every time (fill in the camper) or If there was a fire then (fill in the camper) would. They repeated these sentences for each boy in their bunk. Now if, during the year, they were given an as-signment to write a paper, pretty much re-peating the same thing

    (Continued on page 4)

  • 15 times, it would be con-sidered a punishment. But not in Camp Achdus! The boys then had the choice of going to swimming or play-ing in the rain. Most ended up getting wet in some form or another. Another great day comes to an end at Camp Achdus.

    Thursday

The countdown has be-gun. Its hard to believe but there are only six more days left to camp! That means that we are about to start school again. Wahhh! I need a Motrin. Extra Strength. I guess we just

have to make the best of what we have left.

TALENT SHOW!!! Peo-ple bring in all sorts of fan-cy stuff. Guitars, Magic Cards, voices, Dances, Har-monicas! Yeshaya Badush, Mordechai Mosheyev and Yosef Chaim Goldstein did a really cool Cartwheel dance. Simcha Kay, Zach Bril, and Matti Brennen also did some dances and musical magic. Chananya Kelemer and Reuven Rudin played some beauti-ful guitar together! Chaim Shvartz played the har-monica beautifully! Adam Harari had a great HipHop performance but the music

Dovy Goldman intercepting a pass on the one yard line and then returning it for a touch-down to close the games gap to 14-7. But that wasnt enough as the Jets topped the Eagles 21-7.

Daled Gadol also played football choosing for team names Eagles and Steelers. Highlights from this game in-

clude Gershon Colemans endzone snag to start the scor-

ing, Yehuda Galens looooong catch for a touch-down and his later leaping

    blocked pass on defense;

Yishai Yamini breaking up a touchdown pass in the en-

dzone, and Jonathan Lubels two (count them, two) 20-yard catchesone for a touchdown. There were so many great plays and fast-moving plays and touchdowns and turnovers Im not even sure what the final score was. (But I think it ended a tie.)

    Sports (Continued from Page 1)

was not available. Moshe Juni did a special hand trick. Binyomin Kre-mansky breakdanced. Yishai Yemini made some very interesting clicking noises with his mouth and Daniel Bren-ner karate-chopped with a long stick. Moshe Badush did a cool card trick. The Pollack boys and Yoni Galen joined for a musical production and Yosef Rosner bal-anced a bat on his fin-gers. Yisroel Arbiv sang a beautiful English song. Levi Goldman did some-thing with his shoulders but we are not sure what; but the winners were: David Bril, Shlo-mo Goldenberg, Eitan Goldman and David Kallush. They did a real-ly cool dance to the tune of Yesh Tikva. (If I hear that song one more time, all hope is lost.) Great Job guys! Swim and Park followed. Another great day at Camp Achdus!

    Friday

Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue But not in Camp Achdus! Oy Vey!!! We are going on a massive hike today but the sky looks ominous! Achdus shall prevail though. We shall go on the hike and rough it. After all whats a good hike without a little rain? Bunks Alef and Ches go on a bit of a shorter hike, Eat a delectable lunch made by their mothers and then get to feed the Kachkees (Thats Yiddish for duckies). Daled, Vov and Sof rough it out. Up the mountains, down the Valleys and hopefully somewhere over the rainbow. Have a great Shabbos!

  • Hillel Friedman walked all around the playing fields, collecting the cones after everyone else went inside!

Yaakov Nisenfeld and Shmuel Jacobs saw Rabbi Goldstein picking up garbage outside and offered to help!

When the ATV stopped working, Yosef Kahn and Levi Goldman pushed it around the track with their campers riding on it!

    Rabbi G. Goldstein

Efraim Pollack used his own precious swim time search for Reuven Rudin's goggles...wow, what a tzadik!!!

Chaim Leib worked with not-so-backbreaking effort to rid the floor of the noodles which were residing there!

Hillel Friedman and Dovy Ellman reported an error in the gemara points that they would have received!

Mendy (of Mendy Music) showed unbelieve-able gevurah when he kept on singing his beautiful music even when his audience consisted of just one campers and two over-excited counselors!

Rabbi Goldstein showed extreme persistence in his efforts to retrieve some campers from the pool. After persistently trying to enter the Ganz Van with the incorrect key, the holy Rabbi was persistent in finding the correct key. He continued to be persis-tent throughout the drive to pick up the boys and continues to be persistent in the reading (and typ-ing) of this gevurah note. IYH, he will be persistent in his persistency!

Chanoch Ganz almost exploded with giborness when he threw his refuse towards the rubbish can, but missed (OH, NO!). He stopped in his tracks, whipped around, snatched the trash from the floor, and nicely dropped it in the bin!

General Zecharya Michelsohn wore the invisi-ble gevurah hat when he worked on the yearbook / newsletter instead of doing other possibly more fun things, like Mendy Music, lunch, Mendy Music, etc.!

Dovy quickly listened to his counselor without delay!

Aviad demonstrated astounding gevurah when he excitedly cleaned and straightened up the Bunk Ches Kuttun bunk room!

Daniel I., Chaim S., Yona Tzvi M., Tuvia R., and Yonatan L. were mivatter being in the skit be-cause they were needed for the dance!

Josh Rosen, Yoni Galen, and Moshe Badush held strong against heavy peer pressure and bentched really nicely!

Efraim Pollack used his own money to buy a soft pretzel for a friend who was hungry!

Yisroel Meir Burger, Simcha Press, and Bin-yomin Rosskamm spent countless hours, mamash ad ein shiur, being matriarch while they could have

been relaxing, in order to do a chesed for Tuvia by cleaning the Ganz van. Wow!

    Akiva Logue

Efraim Pollack cleaned up the bunk room!

    S. Kaplun

Uri Meth leant his goggles to a friend who need-ed them!

    E Pollack

Avrohom Zev was playing with a toy his sister wanted to use and even when it was his turn to use it he still let his sister use it before his turn was over!

    Yaakov Arye & Ciril Abraham

Yehuda Nissim Silverman and Tzvi Oshinsky came down from on top of the cabinet right away when told to!

    Levi Goldman

When selling canteen, Shlomo Goldenberg is very patient and clear with customers!

    Seth

Yona Tzvi brought his little brother up to take a bath and helped him in the bath in such a responsi-ble way!

Chaim Leib showed a lot of empathy when Mommy hurt her foot yesterday. He ran to get ice even though Mommy didnt ask!

Yona Tzvi gave Bubbie such a warm greeting at our family BBQ and made her so happy! It is a big mitzvah to show respect to elderly people!

Yona Tzvi helped his younger brother get dressed this morning! What a chessed!

    Mrs. Miller

In spare moments, Simcha chooses to spend his time reading medrash and other Jewish books.

On Sunday, Simcha proudly took charge of a new route for JRA food deliveries. And then he went to visit his grandmother who wasn't feeling well.

    Chaim Leib Miller

    Dear Mr. & Mrs. Miller,

Mazal tov on Chaim Leib's completion of his Gibor Chart! I can attest that Chaim Leib has been working energetically toward completing this chart for weeks. And now, his efforts have paid off! Today, the cele-bration of Chaim Leib's accom-plishment elicited song and cheers from campers and coun-selors alike.

    Rabbi G. Goldstein

    Reb Gedalia:

Anything positive you can come up with to focus his ener-gies on is a great thing. We are both elated (and relieved) to know that he has completed the chart. Thank you for the bracha and for the dedication by you and your staff in making this a memorable summer for our kids.

    Upcoming Events

    Bunks Alef & Ches Kattan

It's that time of the year that we think about decorating our sukkahs, wait a minute, it's too early for Suc-cos!

Yes, it is a bit early but we won't be in camp by the time yom tov is here so we need to make our decorations now. We used stars to made beauti-ful hanging decorations for our suk-kah. There were stars on the star and also stars hanging down from the

star. They looked so beautiful hang-ing from the hooks in the room! Eve-ryone was so proud of how their pro-ject looked when it was done.

    Bunks Alef

Continuing on our decorating for the Sukkah, we strung beads made from straw. Bunk Alef Gadol wove the yarn thru both sides of the bead, it was hard at first but most of the boys really got the hang of it.

Bunk Alef Kattan also strung beads and straws, we made an alternating pattern with a straw bead and then a small plastic bead. Some of the boys wanted it to be a necklace for their moms and some were just long strands that can be hung up in the sukkah. The best part is that if it rains the decorations should not fall apart!

    MRS. DORIS LIPSKY
