• Selecting appropriate materials to control costs• Monitor the Bidding process
• Act as the Owner’s Representative• Helps owner envision design• Responds to owner’s needs & wants• Confirm work has been completed for payment of contractor
• Design Documentation (Typical Duties)• Drawings (plans, elevations, sections, details)• Renderings (perspectives, sketches, photorealistic)• Scaled models

• Construction Documentation• Produce a coordinated set of working drawings suitable for

• Specifications• Description of the quality of desired materials and installation

• Construction Administration• Certifies payment to Contractor• Certifies changes during construction• Observes the construction process
• Assures compliance with Contract Documents• Project Completion and Closeout

• Professional Degree• From a NAAB (Nat’l Architectural Accrediting Board) accredited
school• Bachelors of Architecture (4-5 years of school)• Masters of Architecture (5-6 years of school)• Required degree depends on state of registration.• B.A. or B.S. in Architecture DOES NOT meet licensure
requirements in Maryland• Internship
• 3 years & 700 training units (1 unit = 8 hours)• Monitored by Intern Development Program (IDP) through
NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Board)

• Must past the ARE (Architectural Registration Exam)
• 9 parts (6 written, 3 graphic)• Addresses different disciplines

• Continuing Education may be required depending on state• Typically can be fulfilled through conferences & lunch-n-learns
• Professional Affiliations• American Institute of Architects (AIA)

erection• Many subcontractors to help complete work
