2014 HEALTHCARE CHANGES

1Starting January 1, 2014 a federal mandate goes

into effect stating Americans who can afford healthcare

coverage will be required to purchase insurance by March 31, 2014 or face a

tax penalty.

2Insurers will not be able

to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Insurers will not be able to charge

more based on gender or more than they’d charge a healthy person of the

same age.

3To help facilitate these

changes, online marketplaces called

“exchanges” will open October 1, 2013 which will allow individuals, families, and small

business owners shop for health insurance online.

Individual and small business health insurance plans must include a minimum level of

coverage. These essential benefits include: emergency services, hospitalizations,

laboratory services, maternity care, mental health and substance abuse treatment,

outpatient care, pediatric care, prescription drugs, preventive care, and rehabilitative

services, as well as vision and dental care for children.

5

States can choose to expand their Medicaid programs. The expansion is intended to help insure an additional

16 million low-income Americans. States that opt in will receive federal

funding to cover 100% of the expanded Medicaid costs for three

years and then 90% thereafter.
