Growing environmental awareness and legal constraints are requiring a major effort from all partners in the coat-ings industry. Attempts to meet these requirements range from a reduction of solvents to solid systems and the use of radiation-curing coatings. Another environment-friendly option is the use of water-dilutable systems. These we will discuss in this bulletin.

The tough requirements placed on these furniture and parquet coatings need continuous development. In addi-tion to binders, additives also play an important role. In our research and technical service laboratory, we have carried out comprehensive experiments on the influence of matting agents on the formulation and on coating properties.

Efficiency

Besides ACEMATT® TS 100, which is known to be very efficient, ACEMATT® 3300 also displays high matting power.

The matting of water-based coatings using ACEMATT®Water-based coatings are generally easy to matt, although their incorporation and stabilization do require special attention. At this point, we must mention disper-sion, the adsorption of associative thickeners by silica matting agents, and storage stability. Efficiency and high transparency are required. These requirements can be satisfied through the choice of suitable matting agents.

To demonstrate how our new matting agent ACEMATT® 3300 satisfies these high requirements,

we will apply two formulations that are used for indus-trial applications and contain conventional binders.

For our experiments, we used a two-component PUR coating (System A) and a UV-curing acrylic dispersion (System B). In addition to our new ACEMATT® 3300, we also tested our well proven ACEMATT® TS 100 and ACEMATT® OK 520 plus two well-known competitor products. All tested coatings were adjusted to the same degree of gloss and the same viscosity.

Thickener adsorption

Because of its novel post-treatment, ACEMATT® 3300 shows clearly reduced adsorption of associative thickeners compared to all other matting agents tested.

It is well known that the presence of silica matting agents in coatings usually results in an increase in viscosity. This behavior is particularly evident in forced-heat storage (40 °C), where a reduction in viscosity caused by thick-

ener adsorption can initially be observed. In our experi-ments, ACEMATT® 3300 was the only matting agent to exhibit a largely stable viscosity behavior over a period of 4 or 5 weeks.

Anti-settling behavior

None of the matting agents produced a sediment that was not redispersible, only ACEMATT® 3300 showed no separation of coating and matting agent in either of

the two systems. Test conditions: centrifuge 14 h, 15 g, 35 °C; according to our experience, this corresponds to 4 weeks of storage at 23 °C.

All of the products tested exhibited a high level of trans-parency, measured here as density, but slight advantages for ACEMATT® TS 100 and ACEMATT® 3300 could be discerned. Here the coloristic measured quantity

Transparency

“density” represents the change of jetness of a deep black substrate affected by the transparency of a coating. The higher the density, the higher the transparency.

Chemical resistance

The test consisted of a 24-hour loading of the coatings with conventional chemicals. Resistance was measured as the degree of irreversible change based on the color

difference ΔΕ*. Here, too, ACEMATT® 3300 demonstrat-ed its excellent suitability for these systems.

ConclusionsThe experiments showed that in the tested coatings, our proven matting agents, ACEMATT® TS 100 and ACEMATT® OK 520 already achieve good results for the required properties. The use of ACEMATT® 3300 offers additional advantages in the formulation of water-based coatings, namely the minimization of thickener adsorption and improved storage stability and suspension behavior.

All ACEMATT® products can be quickly incorporated into water-dilutable coatings without problems. We recom-mend approximately 10 minutes of dispersion, prefer-ably in the dissolver, at a circumferential speed of about 5 m / s.

The formulations used in our laboratory and the charac-teristic physical-chemical data of the matting agents used are documented in the insert.
