Page 5: Accrington and Rossendale College Full-Time Prospectus 2013-14

We look forward to

welcoming you to accrington

and rossendale college.

Accrington & Rossendale College has gained a reputation as one of the best Colleges in the country and this year our results for 16-18 year olds puts us in the top 10% of fE and tertiary Colleges in the country and means we’re number 1 in Pennine Lancashire! We are rightly proud of these achievements, but they are only a small part of the story.

We constantly invest large sums of money to bring you a campus and facilities which are amongst the best in the country and ensure that you stand the best chance of success. We also attract experienced tutors with great track records in industry who can not only share their knowledge with you, but also their practical experience of working in such diverse places as board rooms and building sites.

At accross every student is treated as an individual and you will have access to outstanding support, advice and guidance. We know how important your course of study is to you and your future and we want you to be as successful as possible. That is why every student has a dedicated and experienced tutor who will take a lively interest in you and your progress.

We expect you to study hard and achieve great things with us during your time at accross, but we also believe that this is a time to enjoy yourself, have new experiences and make friends which will last a lifetime. That’s why we created the purpose built “Hub”, which acts as a chill out space and comes with a plasma screen, Nintendo Wii and table tennis. It gives you the opportunity to spend time with your friends.

During your time with us you will get the opportunity to take part in some great experiences. You may take part in the educational trips to the Eden Centre in Cornwall, the Lake District or overseas. You may also go on one of the many outings to museums and theatres we arrange throughout the year or even travel overseas as part of your studies.

The most important thing though, is how you make the most of your opportunity of a College education. You’ll be studying at one of the most successful further education Colleges in the country where our graduates have gone on to become European Cup winners, World Superbike Champions, Michelin Starred Chefs and TV, stage and cinema actors. We hope that you will be our next success story.

The inTernShiP Programme: The internship programme will be open to students in their final year of their course of study within The Stanhill Academy for Enterprise. The student should be predicted or have achieved, good grades in their area of study, but more importantly should have shown enthusiasm, innovation and commitment.

All students will be asked to present an innovative project to the panel that they have been involved in. This project will have been incorporated into their curriculum throughout the year, equipping them with evidence for application. If they choose to submit evidence from an independent project, that will also be encouraged.

Students will be asked to submit their application detailing why they would make an ideal intern. The application brief will be unscripted and unrestrictive so that students can apply in the best way that they see fit; thus enhancing innovation. They can use any medium they wish to apply whether that is paper-based, online, video or mixed media. We want to see creativity, problem solving and innovation and therefore the application will be entirely their own creation.

WhaT iS The STanhill academy For enTerPriSe?

The Stanhill Academy is supported by locally born and bred entrepreneur and philanthropist Ilyas Khan – who is also a past student of accross.

Whether you know him as an internationally successful businessman, the Accrington Stanley fan who bought the club he loved or the Chairman of Leonard Cheshire Disability, Ilyas Khan has a worldwide reputation as an expert on business and entrepreneurship and we’re thrilled to say he will be teaming up with Accrington & Rossendale College to create the Stanhill Academy for Enterprise named after his family office investment company, Stanhill Capital Partners.

The Stanhill Academy for Enterprise incorporates all business-related courses at Accrington and Rossendale College. Students studying one of these courses will participate in innovative, cross-faculty enterprise projects throughout their course of study which will help them to gain entrepreneurial skills and learn about different aspects of business. In the final year of their course of study, students will have the opportunity to apply for an internship programme at one of Ilyas Khan’s companies. Each year, one student will be chosen to take part in this once in a lifetime internship programme. Those that don’t succeed to gain an internship will still have benefited from being a part of this inspirational Business Academy.

ABOuT APPREnTICESHIPSApprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Functional Skills qualifications and, in some cases, a Technical Certificate.

dO I nEEd QuALIfICATIOnS?We look for certain skills and your GCSE achievements. We will ask you to take a Genesys test (which measures your interests and abilities to ensure you’re on the right track as you develop your career plan) and a Basic Skills Assessment. • A technical certificate such as a BTEC or City and Guilds (included in most cases)

• Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation

HOW LOng dOES An APPREnTICESHIP TAkE?There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. In addition, you’ll study for a technical certificate, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.
