ABOUT YOUR KIDNEYS

Information to give you all the

knowledge you require about the

disease. .

Kidneys are bean-shaped organs

located towards the back of the

body, one on either side of the

spine, near the waistline. They areMadhu Sudhan(Diagnostic Manager)

about the size of a fist and are protected by otherorgans and last two ribs. A normal kidney does thefollowing in the body: .It .

Removes waste products and cleans the blood. .

Balances water and salt to control fluid in the body.

Produces hormones that control blood pressure. .

Produces the hormone Erthropoietin that helps make red blood cells. .

Activates Vitamin D to maintain healthy and strong bones. .

Controls the amount of calcium, potassium magnesium, and phosphorous in the blood. .

Types of Renal (Kidney) Failure. .Acute renal (kidney) failure: Abrups, rapid declinein kidney function which is usually reversible. Kidneyfunction may not be totally lost. Patients with acutekidney failure may need dialysis therapy until thekidneys start to work again. .

Chronic renal (kidney) failure: The decrease in thefunction of both kidneys with chronic kidney diseaseoccurs over a long period of time. The last stage ofchronic kidney disease is known as End- stage RenalDisease (ESRD). In ESRD, waste products that havebeen building up in the blood, have to be removed bydialysis. Kidneys in this stage will not recoverfunction and the patient will need regular dialysis ora kidney transplant. .Some of the symptoms of kidney failure are: .

Increased night- time urine production. .

Lack of interest in everyday activities. .

Altered tase sensation/ appetite. .

Tiredness and loss of energy. .

Generally feeling ill. .

Shortness of breath. .

Sickness and nausea. ,

Loss of libido/ sex drive. .

Itching all over the body. .What happens when someone notice the symptomsand requires medical help? .When the patient reports symptoms suggestive of akidney disease, the doctor may refer the patient to aspecialist or conduct investigation or conductinvestigation which may include: blood count urineexamination, renal function tests (BUN Blood UreaNitrogen & Creatinine), chest X-ray, ECG andSonography of kidneys, Depending on the testresults, the patient may be counselled about renalreplacement therapy would be dialysis andtransplantation. .Dialysis as an option .Dialysis is a method of removing toxic substances(impurities or wastes) from the blood when thekidneys are unable to do so. Dialysis is mostfrequently used for patients who have kidney failure, but may also be used to quickly remove certain drugsor poisons. This technique can be life saving inpeople with acute or chronic kidney failure. .Two types of dialysis .Peritoneal Dialysis: The peritoneal membrance actsas a filter. Dialysis fluid flows into the peritonealcavity through a small tube inserted into the abdomen.Excess water and waste products from the blood aredrawn across the membrance into the dialysis fluid. The procedure of installing fluid, letting it stay in theabdomen for a period of time and then draining it outis called "exchange". The fluid is then drained out. This needs to be carried out at periodic intervalsduring the day. .Haemodialysis: Blood passes through a dialyser("artificial kidney") which is attached to a machine. The machine assists in the production of a solution(dialysate). Waste products in the blood are filteredacross the synthetic semi-permeable membrance(the dialyser) and the clean blood is returned to thebody. Each dialysis session lasts around four hours. After a preparatory period on dialysis or may beeven earlier, the doctor may suggest a kidneytransplant as a permanent solution. .Pre-emptive transplant .The patient may be recommended transplantationeven before the need for dialysis exists. This is calledas 'pre-emptive transplant'. .

There was a farmer who sold a pound of butter to the

baker. One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to

see if he was getting a pound and he found that he was not.

This angered him and he took the farmer to court. The

judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The

farmer replied, amour Honor, I am primitive. I don't have

a proper measure, but I do have a scale. " The judge asked,

"Then how do you weigh the butter?" The farmer replied

"Your Honor, long before the baker started buying butter

from me, I have been buying a pound loaf of bread from

him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it

on the scale and give him the same weight in butter.

If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker." .

What is the moral of the story? We get back in life what

we give to others. Whenever you take an action, ask

yourself this question: Am I giving fair value for the

wages or money I hope to make? Honesty and dishonesty

become a habit. Some people practice dishonesty and can

lie with a straight face. Others lie so much that they don't

even know what the truth is anymore. But who are they

deceiving? Themselves .

EAT LOTS OF FRUITS TO STAY HEALTHY

Ms. Rachna Kaura (Dietician)

Fruits are rich antioxidants. They are very helpful to us in keeping good health. Keep a covered

container of washed bite sized fruit in the fridge. Visit the fruit container rather than the biscuit

barrel/sweets when you need a nibble. .

Eating fruits at nights are the big cure. When you are tired to even think of about what's for

dinner & you have prepared nothing in advance. .

The plan is to load your refrigerator with pre-washed & frozen vegetables & fruits. These convenient

foods can be cooked Quickly in the microwave & having a variety on hand. .

Frozen berries don't even need to be defrosted just let them thaw while you eat dinner or mix them with other room

temperature fruits.
