Editorial Note: The spellings encountered in Conrad Martens' "Account of Pictures painted at N.S. Wales" are quite variable, such that surnames and titles are often spelt a number of different ways e.g. "Dumarick" and "Dumaresq". Problems also arise due to difficulties in distinguishing between certain letters such as "J", "G", "L" and "C" when they are used for Christian names. Spellings are as written by Martens in his account book, however corrections have been made where obvious. For example, "Dumaresq" is the correct spelling, and not "Dumarick". Possibly refers to Sophia Ives Campbell (1812-1891), daughter of Robert and Sophia Campbell, who received lessons from Martens in the late 1840's; or Marianne Campbell (1827-1903) who, according to Kerr & Falkus, also received painting and drawing lessons from Martens. {Kerr, K&F, M, xL, xF, xLow}. Campbell, Robert I (1769-1846) Campbell, Robert II (1804-1859) Campbell, Robert III (1789-1851) Of the three Robert Campbell's mentioned in the ADB, the most famous is Robert Campbell I (1769-1846), merchant, pastoralist, politician and philanthropist of Campbell's Cove, Sydney. The second Robert Campbell II (1804-1859) was the son of this famous merchant, and followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a partner in Campbell & Co. The third Robert Campbell III (1789-1851) was a nephew of the famous merchant and fellow partner in Campbell & Co., successful in his own right. {ADB, M, Bertie, Kerr, Low, F, L}. Robert Campbell I purchased "Campbell's Wharf, the Cove" for £12.12. in 1838; plus "Campbell's House" for £10.10. and two "View from Rosebank" for £15.15. and £10.10. respectively in 1840. Robert Campbell II may have been responsible for the "Portrait of Mr Campbell (Copy)" produced by Martens in 1847, and sold for £12.12., the year after his father's death. He also purchased "Watsons Bay and the Gap" for £25.25. in 1855 and "Campbell's Wharf" for £10.10. in 1857. It is unclear if Robert Campbell III purchased any works from Martens.
