The name was changd to Northampton in 1642. In 1663, after much settlement by the English, the area was divided in to two counties: Accomac & Northampton. Accomac County was abolished in 1670 by Gov. William Berkeley due to troubles with Col. Edmund Scarburgh who claimed to be the Burgess of Accomac and immune to arrest for the murder of some Native American chiefs. Nullifying the law that created the county also eliminated Scarburgh’s protection from arrest. Scarburgh died in 1671, and th county was recreated. Some of the above relationships have not been proven and are based on circumstantial evidence. John Webb’s [Jr.] land and home was just north of he town of Cheriton on Cherrystone Creek [Route 13]. It is unclear yet whether John Webb Sr. b. c1628 m. Hannah has any connection to John Webb, mariner, who acquired 50 acres in Accomac Co. in 1627. Edward Webb, speculative son of William Webb m. Ann Adolph appears to have had land on Cherrystone Creek as well. [Source: C. Sherwood, VA, along with other varied sources.] Webbs of Cumberland Co. [Source: C. Sherwood, VA] Christopher Nutter – Mary Dorman On 14 March 1665 Christopher Nutter [born ca. 1640] received payment "for my selfe & wife Mary Dorman Orphant" from "Mr. John Custis Guardian to Mary Dorman.'' Her legacy included 21 head of cattle, "one mare, one mare colt of a year old, one mare foale, featherbed & bolster & furniture to it, 2 pewter dishes & one bason and 5 1/2 sheep." Mary was entitled to her legacy at marriage or at age sixteen, as specified in her mother's will. It is probable she was not quite that age when she married Christopher Nutter, who was entitled to his wife's estate. Indeed, it appears she was closer to fourteen years of age, and had already been a member of the Custis household for approximately three years. On 28 August 1662 Mr. John Custis petitioned the Northampton Court, declaring that "Christopher Nutter had carried Mary Dorman from his house without his or his wife's leave intending to have married ye said Mary." The court ordered "Christopher Nutter be forthwith committed into ye Sheriffs custody until he enter into Bonds, with sufficient security for his good behaviour to his Majesty and all his Liege people, and especially that ye said Nutter use not ye company of ye said Mary Dorman without ye consent of Mr. John Custis or his wife, and pay Court charges.''25 Mary's younger sister, Sarah, was born ca. 1650 (see below) and it is probable that Mary, the "eldest daughter," was born ca. 1648.
