Application:(Welded) fabrications often exhibit angularerrors, which lead to rapid wear of thetrapezoidal screw nuts. The self-aligning nut PMcan compensate small angular errors on theattachment face up to maximum +/-3°.A large grease reservoir increases the maintenanceintervals and extends the service life.

CAUTION:Self-aligning nuts cannot compensateparallelism errors between screws or betweenscrews and guides. Take care to ensure precisealignment. The attachment faces for thegearboxes must therefore be exactly at rightangles to the guides.

Fitting instructions:Spiral springs can be used on chip-generatingand non-chip generating machines.The illustrations show how to fit differenttypes of spiral spring covers to variousscrew jacks.Centring bushings are required when assemblingcombinations of different parts; we can includethese in our quotation on request.

IMPORTANT:Spiral springs must under no circumstances beallowed to uncoil. For technical reasons,please specify in your enquiry whether thespiral spring is to be installed horizontallyor vertically.

If installation is to be vertical, we recommendthat the larger diameter is at the top,

as shown; if it is to be horizontal, the tapershould be away from the direction of flow ofthe chips or other particulate.

A slight film of oil on the spiral springimproves its operation and extends itsservice life.

Integrated pivot bearingSimple and economical design:Pivot bushes are incorporated in the gearbox housing.

LubricationThe bronze bushes are PTFE-coated and therefore require nolubrication in normal service. We recommend regularlubrication for high loadings.

Design tipFor large motors, long strokes and high load cycles, thevariant with the pivot bearing plate KAR is preferable,because the weight of the motor is then taken by the pivoting points and does not affect the screw.

SpeedsThree-phase AC motors have differentrotational speeds depending on the number ofpoles. Generally we recommend our standardmotor with 1500 rpm (4 poles).Other numbers of poles are available onrequest. Pole-changing motors allow a choiceof 2 different rotational speeds.

Geared motorsGeared motors are available for particularprojects on request.

Operation with frequency convertersEspecially for larger screw jacks and systems,we recommend the use of a frequencyconverter to achieve smooth start-up andbrake ramps. This minimizes start-up noise andextends the service life of the gearbox.

When operating with a frequency converter,remember that if the motor is to be operatedfor extended periods at frequencies less than25 Hz, its fan must be driven separately. This isnecessary to ensure adequate motor cooling.

Connection arrangementThe motors usually have a terminal board with6 terminals and a protective earth terminal inthe terminal box. The stator winding can beswitched into star or delta connection usingthe connection links.Star/delta starting is not suitable for screwjack systems because full torque is requiredimmediately on starting.

For motor windings 230/400V (example)

Direction of rotatingMotors can be arranged for either direction ofrotation When the line phases L1, L2, L3 areconnected to the motor terminals U1, V1 W1,the direction of rotation is clockwiseSwapping over two of the supply lines reversesthe direction of rotation.

When operating a braked motor with afrequency converter, a separate actuation linefor the brake must be provided via thefrequency converter.

Braked motorWe recommend using a braked motor tominimise the overrun time of the system.Where a screw jack is fitted with a ball screwor a double-pitch screw, a braked motor isabsolutely essential. We supply motor brakesas standard for a connection voltage of230V AC / operating voltage 205V DC,with bridge rectifiers. Other connection voltages (24V DC, 400V AC,500V AC) are available on request.

Temperature monitoringGenerally we do not supply temperaturemonitoring because screw jack duty cycles arenormally quite low or the motor is adequatelydimensioned.Temperature control thermal resistor (PTC) orbimetal (TKÖ) is available on request.

Some types are available ex stock with thermalresistor (PTC).

Rotary pulse encoder DIGWe have developed an intelligent intermediateflange which greatly simplifies recording speedand direction of rotation as well as connectingto supervisory control system. Previously thisrequired complex assembly and additions tothe drive system; the intelligent flangeachieves this economically and is very easy tofit, even when retrofitting drives.

This magnetic pulse encoder is fitted as anintermediate flange between motor and motorflange. This considerably simplifies theintegration of incremental encoders in drivesystems, whether for purposes of speedmatching, of positioning control (e.g. for dosagecontrol) or for synchronisation.We supply a 2 m cable as standard.

Spring pressure brake FDB

FunctionA spring pressure brake is used:- when there is a lack of self-locking

characteristics (high-pitch, double-pitchscrews, ball screws KGT)

- where self-locking characteristics aredoubtful (as a safety precaution)

- for increased accuracy of stopping position,independent of the lubrication situation

GeneralThe braking torque is generated bycompression springs when the brake isdeenergised. The brake is releasedelectromagnetically by the application of DCvoltage. The protective rings shield the frictionfaces from external influences. The standard version has protection class IP 54.

Mode of operation

The compression springs (3) exert force on thearmature disc (4) which is free to move axiallyand which presses the brake rotor (5) againstthe flange (6). The brake rotor in turn is tightlymounted on the hub (2).The shaft is then braked. Application of DCvoltage to the field windings (1) in themagnetic body generates a magnetic forcewhich pulls the armature disc towards themagnetic body. The brake rotor is freed andthe brake is released.

In the event of an emergency stop or a powerfailure, the spring pressure brake ensures thatthe load is safely braked to a stop.

Electrical supplyThe spring pressure brake requires a DC supply.Half-wave and bridge rectifiers are available toprovide the power supply to the brakes fromthe AC mains supply.

Because of the inductance of the solenoid coil,the release of the armature disc on loss ofpower is not immediate. When the switchingoff takes place in the AC line from the rectifier,this delay is relatively long.The delay in switching off can be reduced ifthe connections available between the rectifierare used to switch the DC line (6 times faster).

If the switching is performed on the AC side,a bridge should be made to the switchcontacts.

Manual releaseIf a manual release lever is fitted, the brakecan be released mechanically, e.g. in the eventof a power failure.

The ZIMM lubricator Z-LUB continuously suppliesthe screw with lubricant. The Z-LUB is activatedwhen the run-time is set (1 to 12 months at 20°C)(gas generation cell). The filling level can be viewedall the time in the transparent housing. Suitable for ball screws under certain conditions.

Lubricants

Always use the correct lubricants for a longservice life!These lubricants have been carefully selected to suitthe screw jack requirements.Caution should be exercised in using other greases!A “good” grease may not always be the “right” grease.

The important question is whether it matches therespective requirements.

Infinitely adjustable from 1 to12 months metering time

Trapezoidal screwInspect the trapezoidal screw regularlyand regrease it depending on theoperating cycle. Use the grease that werecommend. These greases are ideallymatched to the operating requirements of our screw jack systems.

Most greases are available ex stock. The exactapplication and the load cycles are important whenmaking the selection. The best strategy is to send usthe completed enquiry checklist (Section 7).

Ball screw KGTLubricate the ball screw KGT every 300hours of effective operation. For heavy-duty systems every 100 hours.

Grease quantity:Guidance value approx. 1 ml per cm screw diameter.
