Accessing State and Non-Federal Funding Sources
Kenneth J. Gill, Ph.D., CPRP
How do you do this?
• Think about who needs the expertise of SHRP?– State agencies– Health care providers– Insurers– School Districts
• Understand their funding mechanisms– RFPs, RLIs, State register
• Relationships
How to approach?• Build on your own contacts• Start among the people you know
– Clinicians– Clinical faculty– Graduates
• Work as a team if possible• Use your alliance with state associations• Ask for meetings
– “Fortune is a friend to the bold”– We’re between being seen as a state agency and
privatization
How to approach?
• Make yourself a pest?
• Let it be known you (your department, program) are a potential resource to them and you are approachable!
• Has to be couched in how you will meet their needs
• Develop thick skin
• Later, they may approach you
Benefits to Researchers and Clinicians
• State and other agencies rarely fund research, but they want (or tolerate) evaluation, which we should do for every project
• This program evaluation is a form of research or at least scholarship
• “Spin-offs” of projects for scholarly activity• Spin-off of consultations, other services• Directly building on these contacts and projects
and your success
