RECREATIONAL SPACE WITHOUT BARRIERS?YES!

The idea of integration does not mean recreational equipment accessible only for users on

wheelchairs. The fair integration means reconciling the needs of non-disabled persons with

the disabled ones in an attractive, safe and engaging way. To have fun together without bo-

undaries and the need to exclude any of the groups, is a way towards mutual respect, equality,

empathy and understanding.

„Spending quality time outdoors accompanied by a group of friends allows disabled children to experience a happy childhood that every child is entitled to”.

Kamila Gapska, NAVITA Rehabilitacja, Toruń, Poland.

„These are important projects that fill the market gap and provide the opportunity to level the chances of wheelchair users in terms of opportunities for play and rehabilitation in the open air”.

Ewelina Tobolska, Fundacja MAJA, Gdańsk, Poland.

How to design an integration recreational space?

1. FIND THE NEEDS

First of all the location of future playground is mostly defined by dedicated users. Talk to the local community and find out what are their needs. Who will use it? What are their expec-tations? What kind of devices could you install to make the playground a special and safe place for them? Remember,

„accessibility” does not only apply to users on wheelchairs. You should also take into consideration that the playground will engage people of different ages and levels of mobility, including seniors and parents with prams.

Remember that people with physical disabilities are characte-rized by different levels of mobility. Some of them can use the devices by themselves, the others need help and the presence of a supervisor, and yet others are not able to use devices by themselves at all, which does not mean they do not need to play. In those situations, the entire device operation should be taken over by the carer, parent or friend.

2. PLAN

Find out what is your budget and see if you can get additional funds at the planning stage.. Maybe you can engage local communities, foundations or associations for this venture? Determine how long it takes to complete the project, what

is the delivery time of the equipment. Set the construction schedule, report the construction in the office appropriate for your location.

3. DESIGN

If your project is a playground, its design and construction must comply with EN 1176 norm. In the case of an outdoor gym, reference should be made to EN 16630: 2015.Contract a professional outdoor architect for the project, this way you will ensure that the playground space is safe, takes full advantage of the landscape and engages all user groups. Each playground must be safe. Remember, however, that at playgrounds there must be as much safety as needed but not as much as possible! The risk is an element of fun, but it must be easy to predict for the child.

The project must be based on the landscape arrangement in a safe and also an interesting way that engages the senses and stimulates the creativity of users. The design should include fences, wickets, pathways, surfaces, equipment, greens, relaxing areas. Play grounds must take into account the requirements of wheelchair users. Access pathways cannot be covered with powdery surfaces (sand, gravel, pebble) or grass. They cannot be too steep either. Before placing the order, make sure you have all product data-sheet, certificates for the ordered equipment and installation as well as inspection and maintenance instructions.

4. ERECT

Prepare the construction site, find professionals for imple-mentation and supervising. Supervise all work in terms of compliance with the project to eliminate assembly errors and to meet the safety standards

(allow safety zones). Make sure the area is properly cleared after completing the work. Check also the condition of plants on the playground and in its close vicinity.

5. INSPECTION ACCEPTANCE

The equipment chosen, in addition to a certificate of com-pliance with the relevant norm, must also be integrated in a way that takes into account the recommendations of the standards. From 2018, each newly created playground has to meet the compliance standards. The inspection acceptance

should be commissioned by a certified auditor from a company specializing in playground inspections.Check if you have product sheets, certificates and recommen-dations for installed devices in relation to the inspection and maintenance.

6. SUPERVISE AND CARE

The owner of the playground should have the documentation, the Playground Log, which will contain a control plan, inspec-tion schedule, description of the procedure in the event of breakdown, accident or fire, inspection documentation for three types of reviews: regular, functional and basic. Maintain the playground with care, remember about regular inspections of the equipment, in accordance with the ma-nufacturer’s instructions. Take good care of greenery located

in the playground. If the playground is in a place prone to vandalism, consider the CCTV installation.
