Registration

Who Registers with Accessible Learning Services?

Students who have or suspect they have a:▪ Physical or medical disability▪ Mental health condition▪ Learning disability▪ Acquired brain injury

Or who are:▪ Deaf, deafened or hard of hearing▪ Blind, partially sighted

Documentation

Accessible Learning Services requires documentation of disability to provide appropriate accommodations and services.

If you suspect you have a Learning Disability, please contact Accessible Learning Services to obtain a Delta Screener.

If you suspect you have a disability other than a Learning Disability, please consult with your primary physician and complete the Accessible Learning Services Medical Documentation Form.

Confidentiality

Accessible Learning Services (ALS) at Mohawk College is a confidential service. All documentation is held in a confidential, electronic file.

Internal Consent Allows ALS faculty and staff to advocate on

a student’s behalf.

External Consent Allows ALS faculty and staff to

communicate with individuals outside of the college.

Separate document to be completed as needed.

Confidential information is shared only with student consent and it is the student’s choice with whom his/her information is shared.

Booking Appointments

• Visit Accessible Learning Services department located at each campus.

Drop-In Appointments

All Case Managers and Learning Strategists have daily “Drop-In” times.

Short appointments (up to 15 minutes).

Offered on a first come, first served basis and are not pre-booked.

Roles

Case Manager Collaborates with students to develop an

accommodation plan. Assists with educational planning. Offers guidance on financial issues specific to

students with disabilities. Counsels regarding disability issues. Supports transition to the workplace or other

postsecondary and community programs. Refers to the Learning Strategists when

needed.

Roles

Learning Strategist Teaches students how disability impacts learning

in a post-secondary environment. Uses educational expertise to develop strategies

that maximize strengths to compensate for areas of challenge.

Assesses for adaptive technology, teaches students how to use and apply to course work, and makes recommendations for accommodations and purchase.

Supports students with relevant strategies to transition to the workplace.

Roles

Student Provides appropriate disability

documentation in a timely manner.

Follows procedures for requesting and accessing accommodations.

Distributes accommodation plan and discuss accommodations as needed.

Updates Case Manager if accommodations are not being met, or their needs have changed.

Students are required to self-identify and disclose disability to Accessible Learning Services.

Confidential Academic Accommodation Plan (CAAP) Students and Case Managers

work together to develop this document outlining accommodations needed.

Communication tool with professors

Students must email document to faculty each semester.

CAAP must be renewed every two semesters. CAAP can be revised at any time.

Attendant Care

Attendant Care Mohawk College does not assume

responsibility for the coordination of Attendant Care Services.

If needed, Mohawk College can help with the application process and connect students with March of Dimes Canada.

Students are responsible for ensuring they register with a local service provider and that all services are in place prior to attending classes.

Financial Information

Ontario Student Assistance Program Accessible Learning Services recommends that all students apply for

the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

Other financial assistance options include Tuition Fee Policy▪ Available to students with a permanent disability and have been

recommended by a Registered Healthcare Professional to take a reduced course load. Form is completed by Student and Case Manager.

▪ Students may be eligible for a reduced fee after full program fees have been paid.

▪ Does not cover failed courses or courses from which a student has withdrawn more than 10 days after the start of classes.

Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD)▪ Non repayable bursary that may allow students to access funding to pay for

disability related expenses. ▪ Funding is authorized by the student’s Case Manager. (Must be OSAP

eligible)

Financial Information

Other financial assistance options continued Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities ▪ Grant offers up to $2000 per academic year for students with permanent

disabilities and is designed to off-set student loan amount. (Must be OSAP eligible).

Part-Time Canada Student Loan▪ May offer up to $10,000 over the course of a student’s study term. Students

receiving a part time student loan may also be eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities.

Institutionally Funded Special Bursary (IFSB)▪ May fund up to 2 courses per semester up to 75% and up to 100% of book

expenses for part time students. Students with disabilities may also qualify for an additional $2000 of the Bursary for Student with Disabilities.

▪ Must be able to demonstrate financial need. Support for Apprentices with Disabilities (SAWD)▪ Covers a wide range of services such as tutoring, additional documentation,

and disability-specific equipment. ▪ Available for students that are in Pre-Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship, and

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship (OYAP) programs.

5 Things to Remember

Register with Accessible Learning Services early so that accommodations can be developed and

arranged prior to beginning classes.

Students must email CAAPs to professors in

order to receive accommodations.

CAAPs must be renewed every 2 semesters.

Students register for test/exam

accommodations online.

Students must register for testing accommodations at least seven days in

advance of the test/exam date.

Next Steps

If you have your documentation

Complete a Confidential Intake Form.

If Assessment for Success (AFS) accommodations are required, student will attend a drop-in session with a Case Manager after today’s presentation.

If AFS accommodations are not required, please see the Triage Support Officer to book

an appointment with a Case Manager.
